The IPS mode of LCD has wide viewing angle compared with TN mode, but requires a higher driving voltage to reach a maximum transmittance. The electro-optical properties of IPS mode are complicated and can not be fully revealed by an analytic form. In this letter, the electro-optical properties of in-plane switching mode were analyzed by LC continuum theory to achieve a maximum transmittance at a low operating voltage.

We propose the new poly-Si TFT structure which reduces the leakage current effectively employing highly resistive a-Si region in the channel. This new device has partially crystallized active layer, where both edges of channel region adjacent to source and drain are not crystallized and remain a-Si. In the fabrication of the proposed device, there are not additional photo masking steps and misalign problem. Another advantage of the proposed device is increase of aperture ratio adpting the transparent ITO gate

TN mode liquid crystal used in AMLCDs has poor and asymmetrical viewing angle, especially for vertical viewing zone. We have developed the novel OSR (One-side-rubbing) liquid crystal display to improve the viewing angle. The cell consists of two PI-coated substrates in which one is multi-rubbing and another is non-rubbing. The viewing angle of such a display system has been improved to be about ±40 degrees for vertical view.

A new guest host (GH) LCD featured by high reflectivity, hysteresis free and wide viewing angle is demonstrated by adopting a highly twisted (300 degrees) amorphous TN liquid crystal as a host medium. We studied the effect of twist angle on the EO performance of a-N-GH LCDs by comparing with that of conventional W&T GH-LCDs. The obtained lightness and luminance contrast ratio was 〜60 and 〜5.5,respectivity, which will be improved by selecting proper reflective sheets.

The E-O Characteristics of polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) are affected strongly by refractive index-matching in field-ON state. Those factors causing index-mismatching have been described in this paper. A PDLC film with a high transparency in ON state is prepared by choosing proper prepolymer/LC material and cured at a suitable rate.

Time-dependent behabior of various plasma variables of an AC-PDP cell such as the electron temperature, density, densities of ions and excited species and surface charge distribution are obtained by solving the time-dependent, 2-dimensional multi-fluid equations. It showed that the wider the sustain electrode, the bigger the surface charge variation in one period which implies a more stable sustainment can be obtained with wider sustain electrodes.

We have been developing the technology for high definition AC plasma display panels over 40-inch diagonals. In general, when the resolution of the PDPs increases, the brightness decreases because the sustain electrodes breadth becomes narrow. When Using wide sustain electrodes in order to increase the brightness, a discharge toward the adjacent line's sustain electrodes occurs and the sustain voltage margin abruptly decreases. We have found that this phenomenon strongly depends on the waveform conditions of the sustain voltage pulses. We have restrained the discharge toward the adjacent line's sustain electrodes by controlling the waveform conditions of the sustain voltage pulses.

A cathode emission proflier based on anode-hole scanning method has been developed, which reveals emission density distrlbution and local emission characteristics in a cathode surface. The 411-type impregnated cathodes with O_s-Ru coating for CRT use are studied with this emission profller having a 20 micrometer anode-hole. Several new findings have been obtained particularly in the aging processes and the oxygen gas poisoning and recovery processes, which imply the importance of emission proflle studies in understanding cathodes.

This paper gives a fundamental study of the performance of Flyback Transformer (FBT), calculation based on 3D finite element method (FEM) has been done to investigate the influence of leakage inductance and stray capacitance on the transformer, the results have shown that the high voltage (HV) stage of the transformer plays a key role to affect its performance. This may be very useful in optimum design and manufacture of the FBT, and in the meantime we know that the computer modeling is and effective tool. The simulation shows good agreement with the experiment.

Metal contamination free Poly-Si TFT's could be fabricated on the glass substrate at 450℃ by Metal Induced Lateral Crystallization (MILC) method. The channel area was laterally crystallized from the source and drain areas, where the thin film of nickel was deposited in a self aligned manner. Electrical activation of the source and drain could be achieved by annealing at 450℃ after the ion mass doping of phosphorus. The N-channel TFTs showed the mobility of 〜53cm^2/Vs, and the on/off current ratio was higher than 10^6

We propose a novel mixed dual beam laser crystallization method, where two different pulse lasers with different wavelength successively irradiate on Si film. Thermodynamic computer model of laser annealing is used to analyze the solidification characteristics of Si film annealed by the novel method. The simulation results demonstrate that the novel method is a promising one to reduce solidification velocity effectively.

Isothermal annealing of boron or phosphorus implanted polycrystalline Si_<1-x>Ge_x thin films, with x varying from 0.3 to 0.55 was studied in this paper. In low temperature (<=600℃) annealing, grain boundary segregation causes both the conductivity and the Hall mobility to decrease during extended annealing. The effective activation of phosphorus was less than 20% and decreases with increasing Ge content. Boron activation could reach above 70%. It was also found that Si_<1-x> Ge_x could be oxidized at 600℃ in a conventional furnace even with pure N_2 protection.

The polymer poly-p-phenylene-vinylene (PPV) was prepared and constructed into single layer thin film electroluminescent devices as ITO/PPV/Al. AC electroluminescence was observed for the first time on our PPV single layer thin film EL devices at frequency 50Hz from 4V to 15V. The emission spectra were recorded. Light emission intensities in different ac voltages were measured. It suggested that there were other kinds of light emissions besides the injection and recombination of two kinds of charges in emitting layer.

We describe the fabrication of high-efficiency (>95%) transmission and reflection color holographic filters for use with liquid crystal displays (LCDs). Tricolor (RGB) filters are made in a photopolymer film by selecting the appropriate angle between two interfering plane-wave laser beams from an argon-ion laser. The gratings are then fixed by uniform illumination from a UV light source. This approach is simple and highly versatile and it allows for the custom tailoring of the optical properties of the holographic filters such as the center wavelength, spectral bandwidth, peak efficiency, and viewing angle in order to suit a specific LCD product's performance requirements for color filters.
