In this paper we propose a lossless video coding technique based on entropy coding using Markov models. For effective coding, 3 kinds of Markov models are prepared and one of them is selected frame by frame. Furthermore, a probability table for entropy coding is made from a previous probability table, previous frame data and current frame data. Simulation results show that the proposed method is suitable for lossless video coding.

We have developed a virtual exhibition system for art works. The system displays images of art works on a Hi-Vision monitor viewed from various perspectives (horizontally 0〜360° and vertically 0〜90°), which can be controlled by the viewer. The system consists of a personal computer, a Hi-Vision monitor, and user interfaces. Images are stored in a hard disk after JPEG encoding, and are read by a non-linear processing technique in accordance with a viewer's manipulation of the track ball.

We are studying a video component for a virtual studio. In the virtual studio, the video components can be used to render an image from every viewpoint. Each video component consists of the shape and the surface information of the object. In this paper, we describe a proposing new technique to capture surface information of the objects.

The Telecommunications Advancement Organization (TAO) of Japan, has initiated a project in which electoronically available text of TV news programs is summarized and synchronized with the speech and video automatically, then superimposed on the original programs for the benefit of the hearing impaired people in Japan. The project started in 1996 and will end in 2001. We reported the main research issues and the result of preliminary research last year. This report describes the recent results of our research for technology of producing closed captions for TV programs, especially testing and preliminary assessment of display method.

The VRML becomes the popular modeling language to create a virtual world on the personal computers. Also the VRML already has APIs to control the world from external Java programs. The VRML and Java program language offer us the easier way to share the virtual world and make collaboration through the network. In this paper, we examine how to realize the collaborative VRML generation system using the Client/Server model. The design and implementation of the prototype for distributed house planning system are also described.

The Virtual Reality Modeling Language allows to describe 3D objects and combine them into scenes and worlds on the Web. Users can build their original 3D worlds. Users can also incorporate models created by other creators into their scenes. Currently, it is difficult to search favorable 3D objects or scenes from the Web. This paper describes search methods of VRML data and describes its index scheme. This paper also describes our prototype implementation of a VRML Search Engine based on VRML logical structure.

The image display systems in use today are not enough to express the images of image-content representation. We need an image representation system which would impress its users as a system offering excitement, enjoyment, and discovery at exhibitions in museums. We propose a new interactive display method called "VirtuaLight" system. The VirtuaLight system enables users not just to change the angle from which they view an object, but to see through the object. Example applications would include the ability to read the ancient writings hidden inside a treasure vase. By putting virtual light to an object on a monitor, observers are able to see the inside part of the object. It looks as if the part of the object gets transparent and hidden part comes out on the surface. It is the effective way to entertain participant by using a light. Also participants can experience sense of discovery, as well.

This paper proposes a synthetic production system of different media, and management technique of image information by using graphical score, symbolized impression space, graphical symbols, and body expression. The system helps creator in image creation from the impression on the basis of impression words and symbols. Actually, we used the system for the integrated multimedia performance of moving picture, music, and dance. The present writer composed music for dance in cooperation with dancers, made plans for moving pictures, and proposed to create them for graphic designer. We published the multimedia performance. It was given by the system.

This paper describes a method for generating camera operations to appeal one's kansei. We are using Noh play because it has some convenient features to analyze camera operations. One of them is that it is easy to know that particular movements correspond to particular words or lyrics in Noh scenarios. At first, we extracted camera operations from the Noh video shots produced by professional cameramen using a 3D camera model. Following this step, information extracted from the scenario and a picture was used in order to describe each movement. We then tried to generate camera operations using those information.
