Photorealistic reproduction of material appearance is an important issue in the 3D display using computer-generated hologram. However, the advanced computer graphic techniques cannot be applied, and it is difficult to reproduce the material appearance related to the physical phenomena such as specular reflection, refraction, and transparence, because the computation of hologram requires the rendering based on wavefront propagation. In the method proposed in this paper, advanced rendering techniques of conventional computer graphics can be employed without sacrificing the important feature of holographic display, i.e., deep 3D scene is reproduced in high-resolution. Then it is possible to compute a hologram that reconstructs a photorealistic material appearance and a high resolution deep scene. Holograms were calculated with the proposed method and fabricated by a laser-lithography system, and we verified optical reconstruction of superior 3D images.
