Narrow track write/read properties in laser-assisted magnetic recording were investigated by using a TbFeCo magnetic recording film with perpendicular anisotropy. The effect of a smaller size of an assisting beam with a blue laser diode was a focused issue in this study. Thermal simulation results combining the temperature-dependent magnetic properties gave us a good insight into crosstalk canceling function in laser-assisted magnetic recording. Also, the dependence of recorded bit shape on an assisted laser power was well explained by using a macromagnetic simulation regarding bit formation. Thereby the thermal profile in the magnetic recording media was found to be crucial for the narrow track write/read performance in laser-assisted magnetic recording. By adjusting both media properties and the assist laser power, we have demonstrated the possibility of the 100ktpi recording with a narrow track pitch of less than a half of the assisting beam size.

HDTV is expected to be a major TV system in the digital TV broadcasting era. For HDTV news gathering and production, HDTV equipment should have operating capabilities and cost efficiency that is equivalent to conventional equipment for standard TV systems(SDTV). Accordingly, we have developed the DVCPRO HD formart based on the DVCPRO conventional digital VCR for SDTV. In DVCPRO HD, a 1.5 Gbps HDTV video signal is compressed to 100 Mbps by a newly developed algorithm. The compressed video data and 8-ch audio data are recorded on 1/4-inch tape with a total recording rate of 167 Mbps, which is four times higher than that of conventional DVCPRO.

Transfer time simulation in hard disk drive was carried out. Dependence of transfer time on parameters of hard disk drive and shorting of time by multi head system were studied. The relationship between transfer time and rotational speed, average seek time and sector size of hard disk drive was obtained. It was shown that sector allocation for data affected large influence on the transfer time. The result of transfer time of video data by multi head system showed that multi head was effective in the view points of fast access.

In this report, improvement of high rate(0, G/I)codes and it's performance evaluation are studied. Our new construction method of(0, G/I)code is based on a minimized G constraint. New 32/33(0, 6)and 64/65(0, 8)codes are obtained by using this method. As a result, computer simulation shows that both of these(0, G/∞)codes with E^2PR4ML systems provide the better performance than the conventional 16/17(0, 6/6)code.

Dependence of transition noise on writing head field in perpendicular magnetic recording was studied by transition jitter measurement and simulation. By using single-pole type head, Increment of writing current resulted in the depression of transition jitter and less medium noise. Transition jitter was inversely proportional to head field gradient. Sharpening head field gradient was an efficient method in order to reduce the medium noise.
