Hard disks are used as recording media for video signals. They are designed for computer storage, however, there are some problems of recording video signal to hard disk. We are developping video hard disk system that performs effecient recording/playback, with maintaining continuity for video applications. Hard disk evaluation tool for video application is necessary for accomplishing video hard disk system, because evaluation of hard disk performance by using conventional benchmark test cannot be done throughly. In this paper, we reports that we are able to develop evaluation tool capable of evaluating hard disk performance precisely for video applications and capable of aiding to design the system.

Image segmentation has become more and more important not only in the field of image processing but also the field of data compression. We introduce an advanced segmentation algorithm using color information as well as intensity information. Intensity based segmentation using morphological operators is very attractive, because they form flat zones which are useful for marker extraction. The HSV color space, which is one of the common spaces in color manipulation, is selected. The color similarity function is defined for calculating the distance between one color and another. Combining both kinds of information yields not only settlement of the problems but also robust and better segmentation results in terms of perception.

In professional-use VCRs the simultaneous playback function reproducing while recording at the same time, is highly required to confirm recording conditions. So electromagnetic shields must be needed between recording signals and feeble reproduced signals on the rotating cylinder to suppress crosstalk interferences. In case of a small size rotating cylinder being utilized, however, it may be difficult to suppress the crosstalk sufficiently. To enable the simultaneous playback with a small cylinder, we developed a new signal processing technique called the active crosstalk canceler. The active crosstalk canceler suppress the interferences by subtracting artificial crosstalk signals produced by adaptive filters which are controlled by the LMS algorithm and newly developed tap rotation technique.

The DVD Forum agreed format version 1.0 of a DVD-RAM with a 2.6GB storage capacity on a single side at the end of July, and started to issue the Format Book. The DVD-RAM format has superior expandability, reliability and compatibility and is more economic, as such features as : (1) Playback of DVD-RAM discs on current DVD-ROM drives is possible with a simple modification of their LSIs. (2) A dedicated cartridge physically protects data written to the DVD-RAM disc. Single-sided discs can be read with DVD-ROM drives by removing them from the cartridge.
