In this paper, conversion efficiency improvement of the differential rectenna is presented. We have examined the antenna element interval, antenna input impedance and characteristic impedance of transmission lines to obtain higher conversion efficiency. Adjusting the antenna impedance and characteristic impedance corresponds to the impedance matching between the antenna and rectifying diode. However, the reactive part of the diode impedance cannot be considered. Hence, the conversion efficiency improvement using shorted-stub matching circuits is examined to consider the reactive part of the diode impedance, and higher conversion efficiency is expected.

This paper considers a simple method for estimation of the dielectric constant of planar material in the time domain. The method estimates the time delay between the reflected waves from the front and back surfaces of the material located near the antenna in the chamber box. The time delay is used to estimate the dielectric constant. This method is applied for several materials and the results are compared with those obtained by the coaxial probe method. The comparison shows that the method can be used for rough estimation of the dielectric constant.

Developing a high performance rectenna is an important issue in the technology of electromagnetic energy harvesting. One may utilize a coil in an external antenna of an AM radio broadcasting rectenna. However, the coil may operate as a multiturn loop antenna or a helical antenna, depending on how to connect it to the next circuit. The authors, in this paper, make coils with various sizes and measure the electromagnetic characteristics in the AM radio broadcasting frequency band. The measurement using a LCR meter reveals that the author's coils behave as an ideal ones in the frequencies from 500 [kHz] to 1 [MHz]. As a result of the measurement utilized by a vector network analyzer, it is not confirmed that the differences of the electromagnetic characteristics caused by the connection of the author's coil. Based on the above results, the authors compare the output voltages of rectenna whose external antenna is a multiturn loop antenna or a helical antenna.

In this paper, the polarization angle characteristic of the current aggregation type multi-polarization rectenna is examined using an equivalent circuit from a viewpoint of input RF power and circuit topology. It is clarified that the polarization angle characteristic of the current aggregation type multi-polarization rectenna strongly depends on the input RF power. Furthermore, the advantage of the parallel connection over the series connection is also confirmed when the differential rectennas of different input power are connected.

The authors work on a development of electromagnetic energy harvesting in the neighborhood of a transmitting antenna for an AM radio broadcasting. The locations of rectennas are one of an important issue for efficient operation of this technology. This paper treats received power of electromagnetic wave from RKB radio broadcasting in theoretical and experimental aspects. The observation points are in the vicinity of the RKB radio station placed in Wajiro tidal flat. The theoretical estimation takes one of two approaches: Friis transmission equation or superposition of direct and reflected waves based on geometric optics. The experimental evaluation is carried out by using a handheld spectrum analyzer. Although the theoretical evaluation based on the geometric optics is good agreement with the experimental one, the difference in the 60 [dBm] is confirmed at this stage. Since the influences of surrounding obstacles may be little on the tidal flat, experimental evaluation reveals that the received power is distributed in a concentric circle as pointed out in the theoretical one.

A wideband printed inverted-F antenna is proposed. Although the frequency bandwidth of conventional inverted-F antenna is approximately 10%, the proposed inverted-F antenna is wider than 100% by loading rectangular element to the feeding element perpendicularly. In this paper, moreover, 2-elements MIMO system using the proposed printed inverted-F antenna is investigated. The isolation between two antenna elements is less than -20dB by loading a linear slit and a T-shaped slit in the ground. Correlation coefficient between two antennas of inverted-MIMO systems is less than 0.02.

This technical report describes several analytical and numerical methods that the author has used in the past 40 years to deal with electromagnetic (EM) scattering and propagation. First, he deals with the Wiener-Hopf (WH) technique which is very useful for solving semi-infinite boundary value problems. Second, he discusses that the WH technique is equivalent to the filtering operation in spectral domain and the spectral domain method combined with the sampling theorem can be successfully applied to EM propagation in tunnels and EM diffraction from planar gratings. Third, FVTD (Finite Volume Time Domain) and DRTM (Discrete Ray Tracing Method) are introduced and they have been applied to EM propagation in closed space, backscattering from RRS (Random Rough Surface) and propagation along it. Statistical methods such as RRS generation and PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) are also discussed. Finally, applications of Dijkstra algorithm to wave propagation are described from a view point of Fermat's principle.

In this paper, a new design method for multiband RF circuits which can switch their frequency bands is proposed. The simulated and measured results of the prototype circuit are also discussed. The proposed circuit employs two tunable shorted stubs attached at the input and output terminals of the RF circuit. The operating frequency bands of the RF circuit can be switched by changing the stub length. As the shorted stub acts as a reactive element, the normalized input/output impedances of the active device must be converted to the normalized conductance of G=1 by pre-matching networks. First, the pre-matching circuit design of a dual-band amplifier is explained in detail as an example, and a practical configuration of the tunable shorted stub using a PIN diode switch is also proposed. Finally, a prototype circuit which switches its operation bands between 0.8 and 2.0 GHz is demonstrated to verify the proposed design method.

Much attention has been attracted for solar power generation. For reduction of the generation cost, amorphous silicon solar battery without the worry of the lack of materials attracts attention unlike a conventional crystal type. Recently, electromagnetic scattering from arrays composed of periodic dielectric bodies have attracted more and more attention because they are important as highly efficient for solar panels. We analyzed the three dimensional problem numerically by an application of the modal expansion method. In conclusion, we calculated total scattering cross section and absorption cross section for confirming the reinforcement of the electric field derived from surface plasmon resonance and lattice resonances.

The characteristics of scattering and absorption of electromagnetic waves by a two-dimensional grating of thin noble metal disks are obtained by numerical analysis. A set of integral equations for the unknown surface current density on the disks are derived by generalized boundary conditions and solved numerically using the method of moments. We apply the transverse magnetic field of the circular waveguide modes as the basis function. The reflected, transmitted, and absorbed powers are computed for several grating parameters.
