We developed a Read/Write design method for higher TPI longitudinal recording, which give us more accurate track width design and BPI/TPI design. Media noise distribution in cross track direction, and reduction of read-head sensitivity with narrower track width was introduced. To apply this method, we designed longitudinal recording system of 40Gb/in^2. Based on the designed parameters, we fabricated CoCrPtX media which have optimum layer structure to realize low noise and thermally stable characteristics. A narrow shield Spin-Valve (SV) GMR head was also fabricated to realize high linear recording density. As the result, we can achieve 39.8Gb/in^2. Furthermore, we improved the media and the head, 53Gb/in^2 was demonstrated.
