We propose a double-referential holographic memory (DRHM) that can detect phase modulation signal by just entering reference beam into recording medium without additional system for generation and irradiation of the beam to interfere with signal beam. In this technique, by highly-accurate and simplified complex amplitude detection, high multi-level phase modulation signal and spatial quadrature-amplitude modulation (SQAM) signal become available, so it is expected that storage capacity and data transfer rate are greatly increased. In this paper, we describe the basic operation of the DRHM and evaluate multiple recording/reconstruction characteristics by numerical simulation. Besides, the method for furthermore improving reconstruction quality is newly proposed and its effectiveness is demonstrated.

Image super-resolution quality degrades by noise component. However it should not be eliminated because important for high definition impression for digital cinema. Therefore we propose an image super-resolution method by synthesis of super-resolution signal and noise components respectively after dividing an original image into signal and noise components. The signal component is resolution-enhanced using registration between the signal component and its wavelet multi-scale components with resolution-enhanced parameter optimization.

Development of Wireless Electroencephalogram (EEG) system is described. Realtime impedance monitoring and active electrodes are introduced in order to reduce noise from impedance changes caused due to body motion, and to prevent noise from power line interference, respectively. EEG ASICs are developed for the system. The complete system has a low input-referred noise (60nV/√Hz) and is packaged in a compact enclosure (38mm x 38mm x 16mm). The system is evaluated against different types of artefacts and possible applications with the system are discussed.

The authors are proposing a cost-effective solution to realize talking appliances for visually-impaired people by utilizing a text-to-speech functionality of their cell-phones. This paper employed an infrared communication as a physical layer and realized an embedded communication module on an 8bit microcontroller. A proposal of UI description language also reduced development cost of UI software for cell-phones. A compliant appliance built from a commercial appliance showed that the additional cost required for newly designed appliance will be less than $0.6 for white appliances or less than $2.0 for information appliances. The cell-phone based solution is also applicable for speech recognition of various appliances.
