1024 QAM in a 6 MHz cable TV channel, higher spectrum efficiency than conventional 64 or 256 QAM modem, is demonstrated. 5.274 M symbol/s, 10 bit/symbol, i.e. 52.74 Mbps MPEG-2 TS packet transmission with a single carrier is achieved. Channel coding format is compliant with ITU-T Rec. J.83 Annex C.Demodulation by software is separately processed from the real-time IF signal reception. The demodulation software contains the following function : orthogonal detection, 128 tap FIR roll-off filtering, frequency estimation, channel equalization, de-interleaver, shortened RS(204,188)forward error correction code and energy dispersal removal. We evaluate the 1024 QAM transmission characteristics for cable TV distribution. Experimental results show that BER performance of 1024 QAM without FEC is 1×10^<-4> at the CN ratio of 38 dB. Implementation loss is less than 2 dB. This transmission scheme is applicable to cable modem or digital contents distribution.

We developed a power amplifier with predistortion for ISDB-T TTL systems. This equipment working at 7GHz band greatly reduces distortions caused by non-linear characteristics of the amplifier. This amplifier with the pre-distorter has excellent C/N ratio of 53dB with an output of 2W(an OFDM average power) and the power efficiency of 2.2%

This paper describes a channel equalizer that can equalize multipath longer than the guard interval of OFDM signal. In SFN(Single Frequency Network)service area of DTTB (Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting), desired wave and artificial multipath waves arrive at the receiver. If the difference of arrival times between these waves were outside the guard interval, long-delay multipath waves cause remarkable degradation of receiving performance. To suppress the degradation, a channel has been developed and the performance was verified in laboratory measurements. This equalizer can reduce the influence of multipath outside the guard interval to that of the multipath within the guard interval.

With the aim of performing HDTV mobile live relay broadcasts, the authors have developed an OFDM HDTV digital Microwave link(MWL)in the 800MHz using diversity reception. This paper describes the results of outside experiments that evaluate a space diversity gain and a correlation coefficient for the diversity receiving system with the use of directional antennas.

To overcome multi-path or fading interferences in digital terrestrial broadcast wave relay, we developed the diversity reception relay system. The performance of the system against the multi-path and fading interference was experimentally measured. The results showed the efficiency of the system.

Broadcast-wave-relay is under examination as an economical way to transmit broadcast signal to the relay station. Fluctuations of frequency characteristics of propagation paths were measured in the experiment of oversea propagation. The receiving level for 99% of the time was about 15dB lower than maximal level. Using the frequency characteristics, equivalent CNR and CNR degradation are deduced for the path in digital broadcasting. The result shows that a diversity reception and equalization system for DTTB has overcome the deterioration of broadcasting signals in long propagation paths.

The digital terrestrial broadcasting which will be available from 2003 is superior to the conventional analog one in robustness for mobile service because of the transmission systems, forward error correction and so on. However, an instantaneous break of data occurs due to the loss of the radio wave, while we move along an over-pass or a valley between tall buildings, or enter to an area where we can receive only weak radio wave. This instantaneous break of data is uncomfortable to most users, especially in streaming music program. This problem must be solved to offer high-quality service with digital terrestrial broadcasting. Then, in this report we first proposes a complementary digital broadcasting system that is suitable for mobile audio streaming service to prevent from the instantaneous break of digital data. Next, we show the results of field test with mobile vehicle to verify our proposed system. Test result of field test shows that the proposed system has an effect on decreasing frequency of instantaneous break, which amounts to approximately twenty or thirty percent.

There are many situations when we receive digital terrestrial broadcasting signals . We examined mobile reception in a moving train, JR-East Sobu line, using 3 types of experimental antennas. A helical and rod antenna marked high correct-reception rate. A loop antenna made many errors in the measurement because of its lower-gain. At the stations, strong man-made noise disturbed the reception and decreased correct-reception rate.

We conducted the experiments of portable reception for Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting. In the experiments, we measured the intensity of an electric field by using the Yagi-Antenna set 10 meters above the ground and standard dipole Antenna set 1.2 meters high. The above results are compared with computer simulation results. We also measured the reception characteristics of hierarchical layer for wideband receiver using Yagi-Antenna, and hierarchical layer for portable receiver using standard dipole antenna, then evaluated the margins of the two electric field's intensity.

We conducted the experiments of potable reception for Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting. In this experiments, we measured electric field strength and bit error rate using a standard dipole antenna on 1.2 meters height, and investigated a service area of potable reception. The results show that a service area of portable reception is 10-20dB smaller than that of fixed reception if a receiving antenna can't be adjusted to the direction of a transmitting station, and that a fluctuation of electric field strength is about 30dB in 100 meters square.
