In order to achieve high linear and track densities using Single Pole Type (SPT) head, large recording field, large recording field gradient and small stray field to the adjacent tracks as well as skew-effect-free recording field distribution are important. We have simultaneously introduced tapered main pole, tapered return path on trailing side, and side shield yokes to the cusp field SPT head, then the finite-element simulations afe carried out. The calculated results show that the head has recording field strength of 18 kOe, recording field gradient of 481 Oe/nm, and (stray field strength at the adjacent track center)/(recording field strength at home track center) of 0.16 when areal density of 1 Tb/in^2 (track width =38 nm) is assumed. The skew-effect-free recording field distribution has also been realized.

We tried to fabricate a CPP (Current Perpendicular to Plane) type spin transistor which is expected to have higher MR ratio instead of current-use CIP-GMR structure. For constructing a spin transistor structure, we introduced photolithography process. In order to make a Shottky barrier with higher barrier height between GMR base and n-Si collector, we used HF treatment of Si and inserted an Au underlayer as a metal with high workfunction. It was also possible to get ohmic contact by replacing the electrode metal from Cu to Al. Variation of collector current in magnetic field of simple spin transistor without insulator layer were observed. I-V characteristics of the junction clarified that oxidized Al thin film prepared in pure oxygen atmosphere at a pressure of 20 Torr for 5 hours thickness of insulator layer and Shottky barrier height were 3.8Å and 4.1eV, respectively.

The effects of the roughness R_a and the erain size D at the surface and the interface of Co/Pd multilayers on the magnetic properties were investigated. Increase of the number of Co/Pd bilayers caused slight increase of surface roughness D, resulting in slight increase of perpendicular coercivity H_c and nucleation field |H_n|. Addition of Pd under layer caused the enlargement of surface roughness of the multilayers and the decrease of α(=4π(dM/dH)_<H=Hc>) and increase of H_c. It was effective for understanding origins of magnetic properties to prepare Co and Pd layers at different Ar gas pressure P_<Ar>. It is necessary to prepare Pd layer with high Ar gas pressure to attain higher |H_n|. Enlargement of surface roughness R_a is essentially required to decrease α.

The performance of noise predictive maximum likelihood(NPML) system in helical scanning azimuth recording with crosstalk noise is studied. The bit error rate of PR1NPML system is obtained by computer simulation and comnared with that of PR1ML system. The results show that the SNR improvements of PR1NPML system over PR1ML system at a bit error rate of 10^<-5> and a normalized linear density of 2.5 are about 0.3 and 4.5 dB for the cases without crosstalk noise and with crosstalk noise, respectively, and the degradation of the bit error rate performance due to the crosstalk noise has been effectively reduced.
