    We proposed the hybrid touch sensor of the surface-type and the projection-type that read the change of the capacitance and resistance at the same time. Although the electrodes of two layers were required in a conventional projection-type touch sensor, the new type one can measure the position of a finger only using one electrode layer. The circuit specifications for the touch sensor in this system were discussed to be realized.

    We presented the speeding-up method in the updating time of passive-matrix driven electronic paper and demonstrate it on a practical panel. The shrunk multiline addressing "lossless" data for was generated by new algorism we newly developed. The generated data could reduce the update time by 1/3.5 compared with that of a conventional driving method.

    Using a negative capacitor circuit, the problem on the signal delay of the current-programming time in AMOLED can be solved. However, anther problem occurs that the chip area of driver LSI increases further by embedding the negative capacitance function although a current-driver LSI is already larger than a voltage-driver LSI. To solve this problem, we propose the circuit system that the single current digital-to-analog converter (DAC) delivers current data to a current memory circuit in each output terminal sequentially. This system can reduce the number of DAC of each output and save a chip area, and the negative capacitor circuit is also used in order to shorten the current-programming time.

    The theoretical current density-voltage (J-V) characteristic equation was derived by the extracted paramete acceding to a device simulation, and the physical OLED analog behavioral model for SPICE model described by Verilog-A language was created based on the theoretical J-V characteristic equations. The model is based on the carrier-balance betwee the hole and electron injected through Schottky barrier at anode and cathode. The accuracy of this model was examined by comparing with the results from the device simulation.

    For the simulation of circuit including organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs), a custom device behavior model for OTFT and not for amorphous silicon or polycrystalline silicon TFT is desired. In this paper, we discussed how to model the contact resistances which have the special voltage dependence at OTFT source/drain electrodes, and the validity of the model.

    We have investigated a performance of mixed single layer organic light emitting devices (OLED) by mixing of PyPySPyPy, Alq_3, α-NPD and dopant rubrene. For understanding the carrier injection characteristic of mixed single layer OLED, we have fabricated a hole-dominated device with a sandwich structure between Au/MoO_3 and an electron-dominated device with a sandwich structure between Al. The barrier height of carrier injection was estimated by measuring the temperature-dependence of current density-voltage (J-V) characteristics. The J-V characteristics between forward and reverse bias conditions were identical so the composition of organic materials in mixed layer was assumed to be uniform. Both of hole and electron injection mechanisms were explained to the Schottky thermionic emission with the barrier height of 0.25eV and 0.67eV, respectively. And the lowering of barrier height by dopant was confirmed.

    We have fabricated a 5.8-in. flexible AMOLED display driven by OTFTs. The OTFT array, which was fabricated on a plastic film with a high-κ gate insulator and a polymeric separator for patterning of an organic semiconductor layer, exhibited electrical characteristics such as higher field-effect mobility and excellent spatial uniformity. We also optimized emitting materials and a layer structure in phosphorescent OLEDs to obtain higher external quantum efficiency and a low operation voltage. We could confirm clear moving images in the fabricated flexible display.

    We demonstrate DC-driven hybrid EL devices composed of solution-processed n-ZnO nanocrystal (NC) emission layers and p-pentacene hole-transport layers. The structure of the EL device was glass/ITO/emission layer/pentacene/Al. The emission layer consisting of ZnO NCs with a crystal size of 8nm was prepared by a screen-printing method. When the ITO-electrode was positively biased over 10V, the EL emission, consisting of sharp ultraviolet (〜380nm) and broad green-yellow (〜560nm) spectral components, was observed. We introduced another pentacene layer at the cathode side, and found that the green-yellow component decreased.

    We investigated below-gap levels in MOCVD-grown Si-doped In_<0.16>Ga_<0.84>N/In_<0.02>Ga_<0.98>N Quantum well (QW) structures by an optical method of Two-wavelength Excited Photoluminescence, as the non-destructive, non-contacting spectroscopy without electrode. Though the dependence of intensity and energy (1.27〜1.95eV) of the below-gap excitation on the photoluminescence intensity change, we found that Si-doping in both barrier and well layers reduced the density of below-gap states in the QW region.

    Silicon doped blue-emitting AlN:Eu thin-films were prepared by rf magnetron sputtering method. The concentration of Eu and Si was controlled with the EuF_3 and Si_3N_4 contents in Al-based composite targets. PL spectra of Si doped AlN: Eu thin-films appeared at blue region having a peak around 450nm due to the transition of divalent Eu ion. The Commission International de l'Eclairage (CIE) color coordinates were x=0.169 and y=0.130. To understand the effects of Si doping in the AlN:Eu thin-film phosphor, concentration dependence was measured. Although EL devices having the double insulating structure with using BaTa_2O_6 insulating film were also fabricated, the luminance was poor.

    BaAl_2S_4:Eu thin films were prepared by DC reactive sputtering using Ar; H2S mixture gas. It was found that best condition of flow ratio (H2S/total gas) is 2%. The crystallinity and PL characteristics of BaAl_2S_4:Eu thin films show best under the condition of substrate temperature during the sputtering and annealing temperature are 400℃ and 790℃, respectively. EL devices having double insulating structure were fabricated with these conditions. The maximum luminance was 14.4cd/m2 under the 1kHz sinusoidal voltage. The maximum luminance level increased with insert the buffer layers between the phosphor layer and both insulating layers.

    In this study, We have been prepared the SrGa_2S_4:Eu thin film phosphors. Preparation of the SrGa_2S_4:Eu needs high temperature annealing. But an ordinary substrate can't stand high temperature over 600℃. We use the laser annealing method, in order to solve this problem. In the before study, KrF excimer laser (248nm) was used for beam source. It was difficult to achieve good emission properties by this method. In the present study, Nd:YAG laser (355nm) was used, and we analyzed effect of this change. Two pellets, Ga_2S_3:Eu (1mol%) and SrS:Eu (2mol%) are deposited by two Electron Beams (EB) evaporation system. After deposited, high temperature annealing (850℃) and laser annealing after pre-annealing (500℃) were carried out. On the latter method samples showed SrGa_2S_4 phase by XRD, and green emission peaked at 533nm based on Eu^<2+> ion in SrGa_2S_4. Therefore, it was found that high-luminance SrGa_2S_4:Eu thin film can be prepared on low temperature lower than 600℃. On the CL luminance, it was showed 18,000cd/m^2 higher than the high temperature annealing sample under excitation with 10kV, 60μA/cm^2. This result showed the strong improvement of emitting properties was achieved.

    Structure and photoluminescence properties of ZnCdO particles by high pressurized firing has been investigated for the preparation of multi-layered ZnO/ZnCdO/ZnO particles, for which lower temperature process is preferred to prevent thermal diffusion between the layers. As the result, the intensity of the excitonic emission was increased and the emission from the oxygen vacancies was suppressed.

    Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) powders have been fabricated by a chemical vapor method aiming at its application for the UV phosphors. The purposes of this study are the optimization of synthesis conditions and the characterization of luminescence properties of h-BN. The dependence of synthesis conditions on the powder properties has been examined by changing mainly flow rates of gases with a reaction temperature kept at 1800℃ during synthesis. The X-ray diffraction measurement has revealed that the samples include amorphous or the other unknown phase. On the other hand, the sample showing the band edge emission in the wavelength region of 215〜240nm has been fabricated although the cathodoluminescence spectrum is dominated by the impurity-related band in 300〜350nm.

    LnOF:Tb (Ln=Y, La, Gd) phosphors have been examined as Vacuum Ultra-Violet (VUV) excited green phosphors It is confirmed that YOF:Tb reveals a phase transition from hexagonal to tetragonal with increasing firing temperature. The hexagonal YOF:Tb has a strong PL excitation band in a VUV region, while that of the tetragonal phase is very weak. By substituting Y to Gd, it has been found that the PL intensity for 147nm-excitation is improved. The PL peak intensity of (Y,Gd)OF:Tb is approximately 160% of that of Zn_2SiO_4:Mn.

    CuAlS_2:Mn shows a pure red luminescence and has a relatively strong excitation band in the near-UV wavelength range. The phosphor also shows a slight temperature quenching, therefore it is expected as a proposing red phosphor for near-UV LED excitation. In this study, it has been found that photoluminescence (PL) intensity is significantly improved by Mg codoping, which is thought to act as both charge compensator for Mn^<2+> luminescent centers and relaxation of a lattice distortion induced by Mn incorporation into CuAlS_2 lattice. Considering a charge compensation system, (Cu,Mg)(Al,Si)S_2:Mn is a proper composition, in which about three times higher PL intensity has been obtained under near-UV excitation compared to only Si codoped CuAlS_2:Mn.

    We focused on the color memory and the color adaptation for analyzing a cause of different impression when reproduced images was seen after a short interval of 3 minutes. Experiments were conducted under two conditions; illuminations were same and different between memorizing times and reproducing times. D65 (6500K) and cool white (4200K) illuminations were adopted for lightings. In the experiments, we measured different color of impression between that of an image seen first and seen after 3 minutes. Every subject selected an image which gave similar impression as the images seen first among 5 by 5 comparison images, which were changed lightness and saturation from the image seen first. As results, the objects select images of larger lightness and saturation than those seen first. The tendencies are different between simple patch and natural images. The phenomena induced by image memory are similarly appeared under different illuminations.

    We have made a still camera which could acquire XYZ tristimulus values, and constructed high fidelity color reproduction system. In this paper, we examined the efficient method of evaluating quality of metallic topcoats by using this system. We made images by changing chroma, hue, luminance and luminance of flake pigments, and obtained the tolerance by the subjectivity evaluation experiment. As a result, we obtained the relation of linear between threshold about luminance of flake pigments and value or area of it, threshold about the others and standard deviation of luminance. We propose the method by using this relation.

    We studied color gamut of a three primary display which is optimum for reproducing light-source colors and object colors. Color gamut of three primaries was derived where color difference between reproduced and calculated light-source colors is minimum. The light-source colors were obtained by calculation based on a model. At the same time, almost all typical object colors and those in the gamut of BT.709 were considered to be included in the derived color gamut. In addition, the primaries were selected by taking into consideration spectral luminous efficiency.

The author has focused on the phenomina so called 3-color crosstalk which is caused by RGB 3-color LED backlight. And the author has developed a new compensation method based on color reporoduction model.

    The partial depolarization caused by the scattered light due to liquid crystal layers affects the light leakage in the black state of liquid crystal displays. We clarified the result experimentally using homogeneously aligned liquid crystal cells. We demonstrated that the characteristics of light leakage in the black state depends on the aligning direction of liquid crystal layers.

    We have studied the influences of the flexoelectric polarization on IPS-Pro LCDs which has been considered as negligible. We have found flexoelectric polarization in IPS-Pro-LCDs. Moreover the driving voltage of IPS-Pro LCDs is decreased by increasing flexoelectric coefficients sufficiently.

    In order to achieve high-performance LC projection displays, we have studied LC alignment properties on an inorganic vertical alignment layer, that is, polar anchoring energies and the corresponding pretilt angle formations. Two methods for measuring the polar anchoring energy are used comparing with their results. We clarify the strong correlation between anchoring energies and pretilt angles and the result will be understood by considering the surface anchoring balance.

    In late years, in substitution for a conventional extension type optics film, optics compensation technology of the LCD which used an in-cell type optics film for came to attract attention. In this study, We took establishment of this in-cell type optics film fabrication technology into consideration and studied the fabrication process of the UV polymerizable liquid crystal macromolecule film. For an optics film, We fabricated regular A and the C plate and characterized the orientation characteristic and thermal stability.

    We devised a high-precision method of measuring the threshold voltage and the elastic and dielectric constants ratios of liquid crystal materials. We obtained these parameters from measuring the alignment distribution of homogeneous alignment LC cell in the on state. We confirmed the validly of this method through measurements of several LC cells with different gaps.

    Understanding the dominant factor and the mechanism of the surface phenomenon is essential in analyzing the behavior of liquid crystal molecules on the alignment layer. We measured the temperature dependence of polar anchoring strength on the surface of alignment layers with or without adsorption layer to explain the surface phenomena. As a result, we clarified the polar anchoring strength took a constant value without depending at the temperature in the alignment layer with the adsorption layer, and it decreased as the temperature of the LC cell increased without the adsorption layer.

    We investigated the relationship between the viewing-angle optical properties; the colored shift with the change of viewing angles, the design parameters of the compensation films and the phase retardation of the bend alignment liquid crystal cell in a new single-cell-gap transflective OCB-LCD and clarified that a bright transflective LCD with a fast response time, less colored shift and a wide viewing angle in both transmissive and reflective parts can be realized by optimizing the above design parameters of the LCD and off voltage.

    We have developed new in-cell retarder materials that provide good transmittance and resolution with the goal of enhancing the properties of transflective IPS-LCDs. We explored various additive surfactants to optimize the applicability of the materials. Moreover, we selected photopolymerization initiators and liquid crystal diacrylate monomers as negative-type photo-pattemable retarder materials, seeking to improve resolution and transmittance.

    We developed a new MLA formation technology on LCDs by intaglio offset printing. The technology occurs no chemical and thermal damage to LCD panels. We fabricated a VGA transmissive LCD combining the MLA formed by this technology and a collimated backlight. The LCD offers higher on-axis luminance as that of a conventional device and was suitable for mobile displays.

    In flexible liquid crystal (LC) displays, the electrooptic properties of the LC layer is changed and display image is disordered when the substrate gap is changed by substrate deformation and spacer damage. In this study we have proposed a formation method of robust line spacers on a plastic substrate based on roller nanoimprint technique using a nickel mold plate. We fabricated a vertical-alignment LC device using two different plastic substrates with the striped spacers and comb-like electrodes. We confirmed the light modulation of the flexible LC device.

    The efficiency of emissive liquid crystal display (e-LCD) consisting of RGB patterned phosphors and near-UV LED chips has been attempt. It has been found that light utilization efficiency of phosphor layers with optical filters is more than 2 times higher compared to patterned color filters of conventional LCDs. The e-LCD enables to achieve high power efficiency and wide viewing angle, while maintaining broad color reproduction range.

    A simple algorithm for determining dimming factor in an adaptive dimming technique is proposed. In the method, firstly the dimming factors are roughly determined according to the maximum signal of each block. Then the factors are adjusted to compensate for the lack of luminance caused by the broadened luminance distribution of each block. Computer simulation shows that the increase in power is less than 7.5%, implying the proposed method has equivalent power saving effect. In addition, the clipping ratio is less than 0.04% and the luminance difference between output images and input images is less than 0.45%. The calculation time of the proposed method is about 1/600 times shorter than that of the previous method.

    C12A7 electride, a new microporous compound having a work function of 2.4eV, was examined as a candidate for the cathode material in a cold cathode fluorescent lamp. The cathode fall voltage, which is closely related to the energy consumption, observed for the trial glow-discharge lamp comprising C12A7 electride as a cathode material decreased by approximately 35% than that observed for the reference lamp with a Mo cathode. The present observation indicates that the energy consumption or the luminous efficiency of cold cathode fluorescent lamps could be improved by using C12A7 electride as a cathode material.

    On projection displays using laser light sources, speckles are generated by the high coherency of laser light. We have investigated the effect of a small moving diffuser placed at the conjugate point of a micro-display to reduce speckle, and have studied how the optical magnification ratio, the F-number of the projection lens and the diffusing angle range of diffuser affect the speckle reduction ratio.

    Problem in the front-projection displays is that the screen contrast ratio decreases in bright ambient light. To overcome this problem, we have proposed a special screen, whose diffusing property shows typical top-hat characteristics. The screen can diffuse incident light from the projector in lower angle range to viewing angle range and can diffuse ambient light to angle range out of viewing. In this paper, we have optimized the incident angle range from the projector and the viewing angle range for typical ambient light, in order to practice these performances. Also, we have realized the special screen with the above mentioned diffusing property and have achieved high quality front-projection display with high contrast ratio, even in brightly lit room.
