Traditionally, the LCD driver chip has been playing the simple role of signal driving for LCD pancls. However, with the recent trends of moving towards highly integrated, compact, light-weight, and long-battery life in mobile applications, such as cellular, pager and PHS, both the function and package considerations of the LCD driver chips are becoming critical to fulfil these requirements. This paper will present the requirements and design of the LCD driver chip for mobile communication applications.

To improve the brightmess of TFT-LCD, light leakage area induced by liquid crystal disclination wall should he minimized. In this paper, we revise the new asymmetric pixel electrode design that reduces the light leakage induced by LC disclimation. The capacitive coupling between pixel electrode and metal line has been imvestigated. The signal distortion indaced by compling can be removed by using either thick insulntor between pixel electrode and metal line or blocking layer between them.

We investigated the modified crystal rotation method in which a pair of prisms attached to the LC cell. We derived the formulation of phase difference and confirmed the range of measurement. For the individual case of 10°, 20°, 30° wedge angle of prism, we compared the simulation result with experimental result. The pretilt angle can be estimated in the full range of 0°〜90°by this method.

The photoluminescence (PL) peak of the porous Si (PS) will shift towards blue after the sample is treated by oxidization in ozone atmosphere and deoxidization in HF. It proves that the PL origin is due to the quantum confinement (QC) effect. By using two-step anodization to form the PS, we find that the QC effect is also important in the formation of the PS.

Excitation mechanism of dye molecules which were molecularly dispersed in poly (N-vinylcarbazole) electroluminescent thin film has been investigated. It was suggested that the Forster resonance energy transfer from polymer to dye molecules might be the major mechanism of the excitation of the fluorescnet dopants. Based upon the comparision of the results in films and solutions, it was concluded that the excimer of carbazole groups acted as the energy donor.

The photopolymer material of poly (vinyl cinnamate) (PVCi) has been used to align liquid crystal molecules using linearly-polarized UV light, and the LC alignment mechanism on the films has been investigated. Comparing the LC alignment on rubbed PVCi films with that on UV-exposed PVCi films, it is shown that the side chains of PVCi molecules strongly interact with the LC molecules on the PVCi films and thus the alignment mechanism on linearly-polarized UV-exposed PVCi films is due to the anisotropic van der Waals interaction between LC molecules and optically-anisotropic PVCi films arising from the photo-induced anisotropic side chain distribution on the films.

We report the development of 4"full color FED devices with the reliability analysis. Each pixel is composed of 4900 tips, which results in 80 million tips for 4"color diagonal panel. The hole pattern of the chromium gate is maintained at 1.1±0.1μm. The low voltage phosphors such as Y_2O_2S : Eu, ZnS : (Ag, Cl, Al), ZnS : (Cu, Al, I) for red, blue and green with special surface treatments are developed and their related screening technologies are studied with electrical analysis. The fully moving images are displayed at the anode bias of 250 volts. The emission current profile of the field emission for the color anode is well investigated with the color anode patterning. We analyze the relationship between the electron emission profile on the full panel. The brightness at white color mode of color FED is approximately 80cd/m^2.

Gated polycrystalline silicon field emitter arrays have been fabricated by using a combined dry and wet etching technique for tip formation and a photoresist etch-back process for gate opening. The fabricated emitter with a tip radius of 〜100 A showed electron emissions at a gate voltage of 45 V, comparable to single crystalline silicon tips processed with a sharpening oxidation. The developed method can be applicable to glass-based field emitter displays with semiconductor IC technologies.

A very high etching selectivity (> 200 : 1) between the gate electrode and the dielectric was used for preveating the tip from etching off during the CMP. Furthermore, focusing electrodes were also fabricated by the CMP process.

The turn-on voltage was lowered from 55V to 30V by 20 nm DLC coating and maximum emission current was increased from 166μA to 831μA. Also the gate voltage required to get the anode current of 0.1 (μA/emitter) decreases from 77V to 48V. Furthermore, the emission current from DLC coated Mo FEAs is more stable than that of non-coated Mo FEAs.

We derived the expression for the electric field in an isolated nematic droplet suspended within an isotropic medium. The field is a function of the dielectric and conductive properties of the materials and of the orientation of the liquid crystal. Results show : 1. the field within the droplet is uniform and 2. its direction is different from that of the applied field. Above a certain threshold field, director of liquid crystal is reoriented while the field in the droplet simultaneously lowered down. This mechanism contributes to worsen the multiplex addressing applications of PDLC films in display.

Hydrosilylation of acetylene with a chiral silane, R-(+)-methyl-1-naphthyl-phenylsilane [R-(+)-Me-NpPhSi^*H], in the presence of H_2PtCl_6xH_2O proceeds with retention of configuration of the stereogenic silicon center and produces a chiral vinylsilane or sllylethylene [S-(+)-MeNpPhSi^*Vi] of high optical purity under mild condition (50℃) in high chemical yield (85%). Anionic polymerizations of the chiral silylethylene monomer by an achiral initiator n-BuLi yield optically active polymers with [α]_D^<20> up to -28.1°, while polymerizations of the racemic monomer by a chiral initiator n-BuLi/(-)-sparteine produce polymers with [α]_D^<20> up to +275°. Thus the sign of optical rotation of the polymers can be controlled by different combination of monomer and catalyst. Magnitude of the optical rotation can be "tuned"by changing polymerization temperature with high temperature generally favoring random propagation. All the polymers have low polydispersity indexes (M_w/M_n down to 1.02) or possess narrow molecular weight distributions. Spectroscopic characterization confirms the molecular structure of polymers to be poly (silylethylene), that is, a polyethylene main chain with a bulky methyl-1-naphthyl-phenylsilyl side chain. The polymers are thermally stable (onset temperature for weight loss in air : 380℃), possess high glass transition temperature (T_g > 380℃), and may find a wide range of applications in the optical display systems.

Leakage current mechanism in polysilicon TFTs fabricated on a non-uniform film is investigated. The approach utilizes test structures which have non-uniform film thickness at the drain, source and channel regions. An order of magnitude reduction in leakage current at high drain bias is observed in the thick drain TFT structure compared to the thin drain structure. The improvement on the leakage current is due to the reduction in electric field at the thicker drain. The electric field reduction in the thick drain structure is verified using two-dimensional simulations. The influence of the electric field on the anomalous leakage current is investigated with the grain boundary trapping effects separated out.

This presentation has given a detailed analysis on both geometric and apparent parasitic capacitances so that a contour map used to determine the storage capacitance in a-Si TFT for active matrix LCD has been drawn up. Degradation of electron emission characteristics in silicon field emitters and its mechanism have been studied. The silicon field emitters with a triode type were fabricated by using a chemical-mechanical-polishing process. There exists a critical biasing time, t_<c'> at which the anode current starts to be degraded predominantly. The t_c is shortened as the anode current increases. Also, the emission current repeatedly measured within t_c with a complete relaxation after each measurement would not be degraded even though the total biasing time exceeded the critical time. The experimental results indicate that the degradation in silicon field emitters mainly orlginates from thermal instability of the Si tip due to Nottingham heating.

We have fabricated a new offset gated device by employing photoresist reflow and measured various experimental data of new device, such as hydrogenation results and high frequency characteristics and analyze device characteristics as a function of driving frequency. Our devices have unique gate pattern and the hydrogenation effect is somewhat different from the previous results. The results suggest that with same offset length, the device with wider space between the main-gate and the sub-gate is more advantageous for hydrogenation Experimental results show that the leakage current of the new device is two orders of magnitude lower than that of the non-offset gated device, while the ON current of the new device is almost identical with the non-offset gated device in typically used frequency (10kHz〜100kHz).

The double layer storage capacitor is consisted of two parallel-connected storage capacitor stacked vertically and its capacitance is twice as large as the conventional parallel-plate capacitor with same area. The double gate TFT has two gates at the top and the bottom of the channel and drives twice as large ON-current as the conventional TFTs with same dimension. The leakage current of the double gate TFT is lower than that of the conventional TFT because the channel is fully depleted at OFF-state.

We have studied the effect of Ci incorporation on the performance of amorphous silicon thin film transistors (a-Si : H ( : Cl) TFTs). The off-state leakage currents of a-Si : H ( : Cl) TFTs under light illuminations are much lower than those of a-Si : H TFT, caused by the fact that the photoconductivity of a-Si : H ( : Cl) are much lower than those of conventional a-Si : H. The a-Si : H ( : Cl) films deposited between [SiH_2Cl_2]/[SiH_4]=0.04 and [SiH_2Cl_2]/[SiH_4]=0.12 show a p-type conduction, leading to much lower photoconductivity. The TFT using a-Si : H ( : Cl) deposited with [SiH_2Cl_2]/[SiH_4]=0.04 exhibited a field effect mobility of 0.41 cm^2/Vs and a threshold voltage of 5.56 V, but the off-state leakage current under light illumination is 2 orders of magnitude smaller than that of conventional a-Si : H TFT.

The trend of research and development of liquid crystal light valve color projection system is presented, firstly. Then, the two types of projection systems developed in our laboratory are given. One of the systems is based on a high-brightness, high-resolution, electrically addressed, reflectively reading CRT-LCLV spatial light modulators (SLMs). The other employs three transmitting-readout si-TFT-LCLVs. The design features of the two types of the projection systems are demonstrated and the performance of the systems are given.

Generally a smaller angle of depression of the HUD could enhance perception of displayed image. However, it can not practically be applicable to automotive use. First this paper discusses the relation between perception of displayed image and angle of depression in automotive Head-Up Displays (HUDs). Second, we can point out a new serious problem, misconception of displayed information, if the angle is very small in practical HUDs. Lastly we describe what this stems from focusing on driver's eye movements through psycho physical experiments.
