To video signal recording for storage medium, high efficiency coding is used same as broadcast and communication. Currently, MPEG-2 is most widely used coding method and enhancement of efficiency is tried. About the MPEG-4 which achieves more effective, most newly method is Advanced Simple Profile, and Part 10 (H.264) is discussed now. Some non-standard methods are used mainly in USA not only for network, but also for storage media. I show technical items mainly about newest Part 10 and movement of new coding method and study. On the other hand, professional equipment that requires frame editing uses intra-frame coding. Improvement is tried in this type coding. In case of bit-stream recording, using of tans-coding will be increase.

We have developed the high density recording technology "HD-BURN" which enables us to record the two times volume data (1.4GB) on an ordinary CD-R media (700MB). This technology has been designed on the basis of using a CD-R disc and a CD optical pickup for playback optical system. Compared to CD-R, the miniaturization of minimum mark size, modulation and the modification for error correction method have been done to realize a high-density recording. A recorded disc by "HD-BURN" technology has an affinity of a DVD player, and basically, the player will be able to read the disc with some modification of firmware.

We showed the feasibility of 4.7-GBDVD-RAM media for 5X recording. In order to maintain compatibility with current 2X drives, we reduced jitter in both 2X and 5X recording. The most important design concept is to control the crystal growth velocity and crystal nucleation frequency: the former should be reduced and the latter increased. To control these values, we prepared a medium having a Ge-Sb-Te recording film and a nucleation promoting film. It showed jitter lower than 9% in both 2X and 5X recording.

Large-capacity optical video recorder for recording high-definition television (HD-TV) content is under development. We realized a rewritable optical disk and an write-once disk using a high numerical aperture (NA) objective lens and a blue-violet laser-diode. The active layer of the rewritable disk is made of Ge-In-Sb-Te materials. And write-once disk's recording layer was Bi-Ge alloy which was more environmentally friendly than that of the rewritable disk. At both disk, jitter values of less than 6.5% were obtained at 25 GB capacity.

We developed a phase-change recording medium which has a high transmittance and a large reflectivity contrast (that is defined as the equation of (R_<cry>-R_<amo>)/(R_<cry>+R_<amo>). This medium is very suitable for the front-side recording layer of a dual-layer optical disk. The layer structure is characterized by a TiO_2 top film with a large refractive index of 2.7 in addition to a conventional structure which has very thin films of GeTe-Sb_2Te_3 phase-change film (6nm) and Ag-alloy reflective film (10nm). A high transmittance (>50%) is realized by a new optical interference arising from a TiO_2 top film. Moreover, we adopted so-called "high to low" optical designing (R_<cry>>R_<amo>) to achieve a large reflectivity contrast (>0.7). In the case of50GB/side (25GB/laver) condition, the jitter value usine a limit eaualizer is 7.4%.
