We have estimated "distribution of electric field strength" and "delay time" in urban area. The estimation can provide efficient service for digitized communication system in terrestrial broadcasting, satellite broadcasting, cellular phone and PHS. This paper describes multi-path components for estimation of radio propagation characteristics. Measurements have been carried out in Kagoshima University to obtain field strengths, which are compared with the predictions. Differences between measured and calculated field strength are within about 5dB. In addition, we have estimated delayed waves in this model. We think that efficient digital communication services can be provided by these estimations.

We have developed a computing software automatically drawing field-strength or interference maps for the terrestrial television service. This software, "Ele-MAP", also supports selection of location of transmitters for DTTB(Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting). As a modulation system, OFDM, is planned to be used for DTTB in Japan, it may be more complex to estimate coverage areas taking account of interference for DTTB than for the conventional television. This paper descibes an outline of Ele-MAP and shows results of simulation for an interference problem.

Field transmission experiments using three transmitters for digital terrestrial broadcasting were carried out by ARIB in summer, 1998. Three transmitters were connected using optical fiber for SFN operation. This paper describes the results of the field experiments. The results shows that required minimum field strength for stationary reception is about 55dB(μV/m) in the case of 64QAM with coding rate of 7/8. 98% of correct reception rate obtained using DQPSK with coding rate of 1/2 and time interleaving of 450msec.

In order to estimate the link budget for mobile reception of ISDB-T, investigations of the effect of man-made noise and dynamic behavior of field strength are important. Instantaneous variation of field strength has been measured on major roads in Tokyo area. The analysis of short section median show that the minimum usable field strength for UHF broadcasting band and VHF broadcasting band is 40dBμV/m and 49dBμV/m respectively. Moreover comparing a short section median of the digital signal with that of the analog signal, it has been shown that the service area of digital broadcast for mobile reception can be presumed by measuring current analog broadcast signal transmitted from the same point.

The draft standard for DTTB(Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting) system of Japan was approved employing OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) digital transmission scheme last year. In succession the Association of Radio Industries and Business(ARIB) conducted indoor experiments for protection ratios between digital broadcasting signal and analog broadcasting signals. This paper reports the experimental results about the protection ratios of analog television signal interfered with by DTTB. The protection ratios were led by subjective assessment method following Recommendation ITU-R 500. The results show that Co-channel interference require protection ratios of 47dB, Lower adjacent interference require protection ratios of 0dB, and Upper adjacent interference require protection ratios of 10 dB corresponding to impairment grade 4.5(just perceptible).

OFDM systems are suitable for digital terrestrial broadcasting because of the robustness against multi-pass signals. And the robustness against multi-pass signals has possibility for realizing SFN(single frequency network) and mobile reception. In this report, we describe a synchronizing method and a program translating method for SFN. And we propose two frequency diversity systems.

The Terrestrial Digital Broadcasting Experimention Conference for the Tokai region was launched in December 1998. The experiments planned by this conference include the instllation and testing of broadcasting equipment with 100W maximum output at the Haseyama Television Broadcasting Station in Mie prefecture. Against this background, computer simulations have been performed with the aim of deepening our understanding of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing(OFDM), the format for terrestrial digital broadcasting, and acquiring the basic technology required for constructing an efficient network. This paper provides an overview of these simulation.

We produce a wide variety of three dimensional computer graphics(CG) animations in TV broadcast programs utilizing the latest technology and various knowledge of CG production know-how. For quick and efficient of the CG productions, sharing of the knowledges is very important. We have newly developed a database system which enables us to give multi-media informations of the know-how. In this paper, we have described the outline of our CG know-how database system.

Flickering lights or intermittent lights and certain types of repetitive visual patterns have some effects on human body. Especially the danger of flickering on television screen is pointed out recently. To reduce the danger of flickering, we have developed a device to find out the sequency flickering automatically. We can also print out the visual images of flickering. In this report, we describe the mechanism and the actual usage of the device.

It is the problem how to maintain an analog transmission machine efficiency well during the simultaneous broadcasting period until 2010 when the analog broadcasting ends with digital broadcasting begun or that it is difficult how it should do the renewal plan of the end analog transmission machine from now. This time, to solve this problem, it did each broadcasting business person and the transmission machine maker, it examined questionnaire investigation about the lifetime and the prolonging life plan of the transmission machine and it examined about maintenance of the analog transmission machine and the renewal time.
