Recently, we have developed a new original full color organic electroluminescent(EL)display, which has achieved a brightness of over 100 cd/m^2 and has the capability of displaying moving color pictures of TV broadcasts. It is 5.7 inches in size and is made with 320×240 pixels. Each pixel consists of green, light-blue and orange elements, which are 0.12mm wide by 0.36mm long. The display is operated by a passive-matrix driving method. Despite some minor technical issues, the results of this development havedemonstrated significant progress in achieving new display products.

CaGa_2S_4:Ce thin films were prepared by two targets pulse electron beam evaporation(EBE)method. As the source material, CaS:CeF_3 and Ga_2S_3 were used. This method can easily control electron-beam-irradiation times to the each targets. So the composition in the thin filmscould be also controled. And thin film electroluminescent(TFEL)devices exhibited high efficient blue emittion. Maximam luminance was 160cd/m^2 at 1kHz sinusoidal wave voltage and 16cd/m^2 at 20μs, 50Hz pulse wave voltage.

The emission peak is shifted to shorter wavelength region with substitution of II family element in II-III_2VI_4 compounds such as CaGa_2S_4:Ce. However there are few reports in which III family element was controled for II-III_2-VI_4 compounds. In this report, CaAl_2S_4:Ce thin film EL devices were fablicated by two targets pulse electron-beam evaporation. Although the EL devices showed pure bluish-purple emission with a peak at around 420nm, the luminance level of CaAl_2S_4:Ce EL device was lower than that of CaGa_2S_4:Ce EL device. Therefore CaGa_2S_4:Ce-CaAl_2S_4:Ce stacked-layer and Ca(Ga, Al)_2S_4:Ce solid solution EL devices were prepared by this method. From these devices, it is successful that high luminance and blue-emission purity was obtained.

SrS:Ce thin film electroluminescent(TFEL)devices have been prepared with codoping Zn as compensator for Sr vacancies and Na as charge compensator for Ce^<3+> centers. For the concentration of both Ce and Na of 0.2 mol%, Na acts as a flux and reduces the defects in SrS lattices, and gives rise to the blue shift of the PL and EL emission. BY increasing the concentration of Ce and Na above 0.4mol%, the Ce^<3+> emission shifts to further bluer due to decrease of Ce^<3+> centers. The limitation of the Ce^<3+> concentration in the SrS lattices having perfection improved by Zn and Na codoping has been found to be less than 0.2mol%.

The temperature dependence of the electrical characteristics of a SrS:Ce thin-film electroluminescent device is being investigated. The positive temperature dependence of the conduction charge is due to the positive temperature characteristics of the dynamic space charge. The dynamic space charge generation requires about 19 meV activation energy. From the significant trailing edge emission at low operating temperature, it is conclude, that Cerium ionization takes place even at low operating temperatures. At low operating temperatures a prethreshold current is observed at the leading edge. This pre-threshold current is attributed to charge stored at, and released from, shallow interface levels. At low temperature, the prethreshold current is concluded to be a mere continuation of leakage current.

SrS:Cu, Cl thin films have been prepared by electron beam evaporation method. After deposition, thin films have been annealed at 700 and 900℃ for 5minutes in Ar. The crystallinity of the SrS:Cu, Cl thin films is improved by adding Ga and Cl. The crystallinity of the films is further improved by the post-annealing. The films prepared using the source pellet having Cu concentration of 0.1mol% shows the photoluminescent(PL)emission peaking at 500nm. The peak wavelength of the PL spectra shifts to 520nm by increasing Cu concentration. The PL intensity is significantly increased by the annealing, however the spectra are not changed. The effect of post-annealing is thought to be not change of crystal field around Cu^+ centers but improvement of crystallinity of SrS lattices.

The EL performance of high frequency driven oxide phosphor TFEL devices using a thick BaTiO_3 ceramic sheet insulator have been demonstrated. The EL characteristics such as luminance, threshold voltage and luminance increase in relation to applied voltage always improved as the sinusoidal wave voltage driving frequency was increased from 60Hz to 10kHz. Luminaces above 1000 cd/m^2 for green emission and 300 cd/m^2 for red emission were obtained in ZnGa_2O_4:Mn, Ga_2O_3:Mn and Ga_2O_3:Cr TFEL devices, respectively, driven with a voltage below 141V at 10kHz. The Ga_2O_3:Mn TFEL device driven at a frequency 10kHz exhibited a long term stable operation of more than 3000 hours.

Multicolor-emitting TFEL devices with a Ga_2O_3:Mn, Cr phosphor thin-film emitting layer and a thick BaTiO_3 ceramic sheet insulating layer have been fabricated. The thin-film emitting layer was prepared by a less expensive deposition process using metallic complex salts which are easy to handle. High luminances were obtained in Ga_2O_3:Mn, Cr phosphor TFEL devices prepared with a constant Mn content of 0.3at.% and a Cr content of 0-20at.%. The emission color from Ga2O3:Mn, Cr TFEL devices was dependent on the Cr content: the color changed from green to red. Besides, the emission color was also dependent on the applied voltage:the color changed from green to red as the applied voltage was varied.

A use of car-navigation systems under severe environmental conditions assesses LCD backlightings to be operable under a temperature range of-30 and 80℃. Although we developed a simple-structured high-luminance flat discharge lamp, the use of mercury caused difficulty in igniting the lamp under low temperatures. Hgpollution, of course, is another issue. In this paper, we introduce a Hg-free flat discharge lamp. A stable peration is attained by lowering the drive pulse duty. Also high luminance of 7, 700cd/m^2 as well as high luminous efficacy of 20.6lm/W are obtained by narrowing the drive pulse width.

Electrochromic(EC)transition metal oxide(WO_3 and NiO)films were prepared by sputtering method, which is introduced further hydrogen into the conventional sputtering atmosphere(Ar/O_2). Degree of redox of EC films thus obtained was controlled by introduced-hydrogen content in the atmosphere. Namely, as-deposited EC films could be fabricated at bleached to colored states. EC phenomena were strongly affected by lattice water and hydroxyl group in EC films. Roles of hydrogen introduced during preparation and injected by electrochemical procedure were discussed by measurements of infrared absorption spectra, coloration efficiency and so on.

In order to drive safely and smoothly, visibility improvement of on-board display will be more and more important. Development of on-board display which is easy-to-look for older people and robust to environmental change is strongly requested. We propose a method to decide character size and contrast between the character and the background for the condition of displayed characters and symbols. to design on-board display images. This method estimates legibility of the characters based on the spatial frequency property of human vision which vary with the age or environmental luminance. This method will help desiring easy-to-look image of on-board display.

In order to establish the evaluation criteria for viewing angle characteristics of an liquid crystal display, influence of color saturation of primary colors on picture quality was measured by subjective evaluation. The picture quality was found to decrease monotonously as color saturation became low on every primary color. Especially, the shift of color saturation of blue had the largest influence on picture quality in comparison with changing other primary colors. Moreover, the picture quality was found to decrease significantly when the saturation of three primary colors simultaneously decreased with keeping the color temperature constant at 6500K.

The Multifield Driving method can reduce the power consumption of a driving circuit to less than half that with conventional methods, but image quality depends on not only 3D sampling patterns but also two kinds of line flicker which stem from feedthrough voltage and TFT leakage current. In this report, our objectives are to develop the moving image simulator using CRT displays and to valuate image quality of MFD method, in case of combining the MFD method with such ac driving methods as field, column, line and dot inversion. It was found that the dot inversion method was the most bearable respecting to line flicker.

A low temperature poly-Si TFT, when compared to a crystallized Si transistor, has the following difficulties:Low mobility and high threshold voltage. An integrated data-driver composed low temperature poly-Si TFTs sonsumes a great deal of power and can not poerate with high frequency if it is formed using conventional circuits. We have developed an integrated data-driver, composed of low temperature poly-Si TFTs that produce a data sampling frequency twice as high as clock one. The shift registers, a part of the integrated data-driver, are divided into many blocks and each one is driven by an intermittent clock. We investigated the relation between power consumption and the number of the blocks to optimize the operating conditions. As a result, the sampling frequency of the data-driver was 1.7 times greater than conventional one and the power consumption of the circuit, which generates sampling signals, decreased to using only 16% of the conventional model.

We have developed a data driver, composed of poly-Si TFTs fabricated at low temperature, for a large LCD panel. This technique of making poly-Si TFTs on glass at low temperature makes it possible to build a data driver within a LCD panel, however, the performance made of such poly-Si TFT is of very uneven quality. Therefore, operational amplifer(Op-Amp)made from this TFT has large offset voltage which causes vertical cross-talk. In this report, we present, first, the problems arising due to using conventional offset-cancel-technique and then propose a new offset-cancel-technique which consists of two new offset-cancel-circuit, one prevents an oscillation and other one compensates charge transfer, and a new sequential wave-form which cancels offset voltage caused by uneveness of DC gain of Op-Amps. The proposed technique has been successfully checked experimentally and experimental results agree well with the theoritical results.

By using the holding voltage which equals the coercive voltage of ferroelectric film, we have shown a feasibility for low voltage driving of the lmage-Memory LCD. Moreover, we have found that the squareness of hysterisis loop of ferroelectric film is necessary for low voltage driving by using circuits simulation. Finally, we have estimated the resistivity of ferroelectric film for low power driving.

This LCD exhibits high steepness of electro-optical performance which is equivalent to a conventional planer aligned STN-LCD. This device is able to display black and white under the crossed Nicol condition without using color compensator, becase the LCD cell has no retardation at initial alignment. This report shows and discusses concept of Vertically Aligned STN-LCD, and results of computer simulations and experiments.

We have optimized the optical characteristics of scattering films, in order to improve the performance of reflective color STN-LCDs. We propose a new evaluation method using the parameter of capability of collecting light. The scattering film optimized by this method achieves good capability of collecting light, whiteness, wide viewing angle, almost negligible depolarization, back scattering and blur. By using this optimized scattring film, we have realized a 7.8-in.-diagonal reflective color STN-LCD with a single polarizer. Driven with a passive matrix with 1/480 duty cycle, this display achieves 12% reflectance, 1:10 contrast ratio and good achromaticity.

Reflective color LCDs are suitable for mobile outdoor use because of their low power consumption, light weight, compact size and good legibility under the sunlight. However, conventional reflective color LCDs have poor picture qualities and performances compared with transmissive one. In this time, We have developed a reflective full color TFT-LCD with a single polarizer using low temperature poly-Si TFTs with high resolution and large visible area. We have optimized the optical construction of normally White(NW)mode TN cell with a single polarizer and designed the pixel structure to obtain high aperture ratio based on low temperature poly-Si TFTs. We have achieved high contrast of 1:15, good achromaticity and low driving voltage below 3.3 volts.

A bright reflective LCD without a backlight is a key device for portable information systems. The guest-host LCDs use absorption effect of dichroic dyes and have a wide viewing angle cone. So that, complicated designs of optical compensation in birefringence or optical rotatory power modes have no use of the GH-LCDs. Black and white color of the GH-LCDs works as a light shutter of a full color display with micro-color filters and the display must match achromatic color precisely. Then it is necessary to mix dyes for achromatic display in the GH-LCDs. In this work, the design was carried out with the Newton-Raphson method in order to obtain the optimum dye concentration. As a result, the relationship between the dye concentration and the half width of spectra of dyes was clarified. The process gives us a helpful guideline in fabrication of the reflective color LCD and it is expected that the precise color matching improves the quality of LCDs.

Evaluation of absorption current curve provides the attributes of two representative ions in LC layer of sample cell. With this measurement, LC mixtures, which are composed of a non-polar compound and a polar compound in concentration of 5-30%, were evaluated at several temperatures. From the evaluation of dissociation energy, dissolution of electrically neutral ions can be a source of ions in LC layer. Besides, the concentration of the electrically neutral molecules increases by increasing temperature. This suggests that dissolution of electrically neutral molecules from alignment layers can be a source of ions in LC layer.

Dynamic response of nematic ECB liquid crystal has been studied by time-resolved spectroellipsometry(TRSE)in reflection(dye-doped TRSE and total-reflection TRSE)and transmission configurations. Reflection TRSE can isolate the dynamic response of surface molecules(〜60nm), while transmission TRSE provides information about the bulk reorientation dynamics. Comparison of the two TRSE observations indicates that the surface molecules undergo much faster reorientation than the bulk molecules. Characteristic feature of all experimental observations can be quantitatively reproduced by a 4Å〜4 simulation based on the Frank's elastic continuum theory. The present study opens up a new field of quantitative analysis of liquid-crystal reorientation dynamics, in particular, the director deformation dynamics in the very vicinity of substrate surface, which is of critical importance in design and fabrication of high-performance liquid crystal display devices.

We have used deuterium NMR spectroscopy to investigate the director dynamics in a nematic liquid crystal 4-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl(5CB), confined between two glass plates. We have measured the NMR spectrum as a function of time during the rotation of the director from being initially parallel to the magnetic field to an orthogonal orientation after the application of the electric field. After the pulsed electric field is removed, the director is allowed to relax back from an initial distribution to an equilibrium alignment parallel to the magnetic field. The results are for turn-on transient the director rotates to the electric field uniformly over the slab, for turn-off transient the director relaxes ununiformly. We also calculate the director dynamics using the torque balance equations in order to make the results clear.

Thermal stability of UV-exposed PVCi films has been investigated to improve the LC alignment stability on the films by measuring the thermal stability of the photo-induced optical retardation and azimuthal anchoring energy. We show that the thermal stability of the retardation and the LC alignment on the films is improved by increasing UV exposure energy, which may result from the formation of polymer networks in a UV-exposed PVCi films. And we try to control the alignment of Ferroelectric liquid crystal(FLC)molecules on UV-exposed PVCi films, and show that a cross exposure method also works well to improve the contrast ratio of the sample as in cross rubbed FLC cells.

LCcoP with the optimum substituent fraction of mesogenic side chain is required to realize a higher speed electro-optical switching as well as a stable memory effect. Also, the response speed of the binary composite systems became faster with a decrease of the spacer length of mesogenic side groups in LCcoP.

We have developed a new type of holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystal(HPDLC)device, alignment-controlled HPDLC device, in which polymerized regions are formed periodically in aligned LC. The alignment-controlled HPDLC device has potential for attaining high reflection efficiency, because of effective use of the refractive-index anisotropy of LC. We have succeeded in operating the device in two modes, vertical operation with an electric field applied vertically to the substrate and in-plane operation with the field applied parallel to the substrate. We also examined the characteristics of light reflected from the device and determined how they are related to the device structure and electrode arrangement.

A free-standing gel film containing ferroelectric liquid crystal in polymer network was formed for a future flexible flat display which will implement attractive features of ease of large-size fabrication, light-weight and anti-shock panel structure. The 3μ m-thick gel film fastening transparent substrates was obtained by dispersing acrylate monomer of more than 20% concentration using photopolymerization-induced phase separation. It exhibited electrooptic response faster than 300μ s, high extinction ratio over 100, grayscale capability due to switching domain distribution. The high-speed response and physical stiffness can be consistent in it, because low-molecular weight liquid crystal molecules are separated from high polymer molecules which restrict conical switching behavior of the liquid crystal.

Polymer Cell-Wall Type Liquid Crystal(PCW-LC)light shutter has been developed for liquid crystal-polymer complexes(LCPCs), utilizing the light scattering of cholesteric focal conic texture. This type of liquid crystal light shutter is an energy saving type because of non-polarizer usage. Electro-optical properties of PCW-L Cs, in which variety of Liquid Crystal components are used have been studied.

Lyot-filter shows narrow transmissive spectra of a specific wavelength by stacking birefringence films sandwiched between polarizers. Based on this principle, the optical band-pass filter using liquid crystal cells instead of the birefringent films are proposed. In this paper, we developed a new method to control its transmissive spectra by applying the same voltages to all of the stacked LC cells.

Using a Polymer stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal(PS-FLC)cell, which developed by the present authors(H.Furue etal ref.[3]), we fabricated a new field sequential fullcolor(FSC)LCD. The PS-FLCD cell exhibits high contrast ratio(230:1)with monostability having grayscale capability. Taking advantage of this characteristics of our PS-FLCD, we devised a particular timing chart for FSC-LCD. We will demonstrate a fundamental performance of our FSC-LCD using 8×8 matrix format that exhibits grayscale capability and display fast moving color bars. Along with this demonstration, we have investigated the TFT addressing of our PS-FLCD by conducting a simulative experiment using a FET analog switch and a FLCD cell. It is shown that our PS-FLCD will be addressable by FETs where the matrix has SXGA specification(1024 lines)operated in FSC mode with the frame rate of 60Hz.

The π cell is one of the most promising liquid-crystal-display modes since it has the advantages of fast optical response and wide viewing angle characteristics regarding gray scale inversion. To realize a wide viewing angle, we have prposed the use of a discotic negative birefringence film with a hybrid alignment structure, which compensates the positive birefringence of the liquid crystals in the dark-state π cell. Although the discotic negative birefringence film completely compensates the positive birefringence of the liquid crystals, the compensated π cell still suffers low contrast ratio at oblique incidence. This is due to the light leakage of polarizers from oblique angles. We realized further wide viewing angle characteristics for the compensated π cell by combining an a-plate, which suppresses the light leakage of polarizers at oblique incidence.
