We have investigated PVCz multi-layered electroluminescence(EL)devices doped with ZnS based nano-crystalline particles. The particle size of prepared nano-crystal is varied from 2 nm to 5 nm. We have observed electroluminescent emission from the nano-crystalline particle doped PVCz polymer EL devices for ZnS:Mn and Zn_x Mg_<1-x> S:Mn nano-crystals. We have described and discussed current-voltage and luminance-voltage characteristics together with EL spectrum for PVCz EL devices doped with nano-crystalline particles. Preparation and characterization of nano-particles are also described and discussed.

The electroluminescent characteristics of TFEL devices using(Al_2O_3-Ga_2O_3):Mn thin films prepared process or r.f.magnetron sputtering are described. Green emitting TFEL devices using(Al_2O_3-Ga_2O_3):Mn thin films prepared with an Al_2O_3 content of 0 to 30 mol.% exhibited luminances above 1000 cd/m^2 when driven by a sinusoidal wave voltage at 1kHz. Luminances of 1557 and 1660cd/m^2 were obtained in TFEL devices using(Al_2O_3-Ga_2O_3):Mn thin films prepared with an Al_2O_3 content of 30 mol.% by the sol-gel process and an Al_2O_3 content of 20 mol.% by magnetro sputtering, respectibely. A maximaum luminous efficiency above 0.4 lm/W was obtained in these TFEL devices when driven at 1kHz.

A procedure for producing high luminamce thin-film electroluminescent(TFEL)devices with an oxide phosphor thin-film emitting layer prepared without high temperature postannealing is described. The TFEL devices were fabricated by depositing an oxide phosphor thin film onto a thick BaTiO_3 ceramic sheet insulator using magnetron sputtering with rapid thermal annealing(RTA). High luminance green emissions were obtained in TFEL devices using either a Ga_2O_3:Mn or a ZnGa_2O_4:Mn thin-film emitting layer prepared under optimized deposition conditions. A ZnGa_2O_4:Mn TFEL device driven at 1 kHz exhibited a luminance of 200 cd/m^2.

Ga_2O_3:Cr phosphor films were prepared by electron beam evaporation using GaN:Cr or Ga_2O_3:Cr as evaporation source and by annealing in air. As-deposited films prepared using GaN:Cr source were consisted of islands with around 1μm diameter, and almost of Ga metal and a little oxygen. On the other hand, the films used Ga_2O_3:Cr source showed amorphous structure with good flatness. The crystalline Ga_2O_3:Cr thin films were formed by annealing both films in air at higher than 900℃. The crystallinity of the films was improved with increasing annaling time. These films showed broad emission band with a peak at around 730nm under excitation with 325nm of He-Cd laser and electron beam at 2keV. This broad emission is thought to be originated from cluster of Cr^<3+> ions.

CaS:Cu, F thin films were deposited on quartz glass substrates in view of development of blue-emitting thin film electroluminescent(EL)devices with high luminance and good color purity. In this experiment, dependence of the crystallinity and PL intensity of the CaS:Cu, F films on the annealing temperature and time was studied. It was shown that the crystallinity and PL intensity were increased by annealing at temperatures above 700℃. They were increased by the annealing up to 10 min, but the increase saturated at annealing times longer than 10 min, From these results, the annealing time of about 10 min sees to be optimum. The thin-film EL device was prepared using Y_2O_3 and ZnS thin films as an insulating and buffer layers, respectively, EL emission with high luminance was not obtained by peeling-off of the films by annealing at higher than 800℃.

To improve both blue purity and luminescent efficiency of SrS:Ce EL phosphors, alkali metal(Li, Na, K, Rb)doped SrS:Ce powders have been investigated. It has been found that the alkali metals promote a grain reaction, and enable an incorporation of Ce into SrS lattice even in a low firing temperature range of 600-900℃. Rb doped SrS:Ce powders show the highest photoluminescent intensity, which is 100 times stronger than that of alkali-metal-undoped SrS:Ce powders.

A free-standing composite film of ferroelectric liquid crystal(FLC)and aligned polymer fiber networks supporting plastic thin substrates is expected to be applied to a large and light-weight sheet display in future. We clarified the FLC alignment structures formed between the fine polymer fibers, by polarizing microscopic study and X-ray diffraction measurements. It was found that bending of smectic layers of FLC is induced in both the film and cross-sectional planes at the phase transition from smectic A to smectic C of FLC. The light transmittance properties of the composite film between crossed polarizers was analyzed by light propagation simulation in several optical anisotropic media based on the obtained FLC alignment model.

We measured the lightness and contrast of two types of reflective color TFT-LCDs under real using conditions. Three subjects adjusted the inclination angle of the LCDs to obtain the most legible condition. At these settings the lightness and contrast of the LCDs were measured from the viewing direction which was selected by the subjects. We also measured the LCDs in a dark room using collimated beam source at various incident angles. These results indicate the discrepancy between the measurements in real using conditions and in a laboratory condition.

Reflective full color LCDs will be used widely in near future because of its low power consumption and light-weight. However, standard evaluation method of the reflective display has not yet been established. In this paper, an accurate measuring method is discussed, the equipment is designed based on it, and finally a standard evaluation method is proposed.

We propose an evaluation method for reflective LCDs measuring the reflectance corresponding to that measured in an typical office. We illuminate a reflective LCD uniformly from directions within a cone defined by the specified angle θ, since we assume that illumination in an office is stronger from the normal direction to the LCD. Comparing the measured reflectance with that measured in a typical office, we have found that the reflectance with θ=30° to 50° corresponds to that measured in the office. We discuss the reflectance and contrast ratio measured in the office and those measured by each evaluation method.

Reflective color LCD is one of the most suitable devices for mobile use because of their low power consumption, compact size, light weight, and good legibility under the sunlight. However, the lighting environment has great influence on the picture quality. Recently, mobile use are colored and they are requested good achromaticity at white representation. But the picture characteristic is also independent on the lighting environment. In this paper we investigated the achromaticity which is requested to the color liquid crystal display by subjective evaluation in various illumination.

The "LCD Measurement Methods Project Group" in the Electronic Industries Association of Japan(EIAJ)has been drafting an industrial standard for the measurement methods of reflective LCDs since 1997. Because reflective LCDs have no light source such as backlights, test illumination and measurement conditions have been the major issues. A draft standard includes four types of illumination and the geometric representation of the placement of measuring devices, which is now available and being reviewed by the related members. This paper describes the progress, status and overview of this standard.
