This paper describes development of lumped constant type LiNbO_3 optical modulators that operates via a faint signal at microwave frequencies for TV program transmission of terrestrial digital TV broadcasting. This evolutional high sensitive LN optical modulators with a C/N of about 25dB at 6GHz was fabricated by modifying the modulator's size and electrode structure. By using a low noise head amplifier, system C/N of about 45dB that is target performance can be obtained.

In digital terrestrial TV broadcasting, many TV relay stations are needed for broadcasting services at mountainous areas that requires high construction cost. In order to reduce the cost, we theoretically discussed a system that can retransmit UHF band terrestrial digital TV signals (OFDM <Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing> signals: 9 channels) sent via long distance (340km) optical fiber networks and verified the performance through experiments. In this system, an LD direct modulation optical modulator is used to reduce the construction cost and high equivalent C/N of about 40dB and very low distortion, which are traditionally considered to be very difficult to realize with direct modulation method, are obtained by adopting optimum design for obtaining a high C/N and wavelength dispersion compensation method at OFDM signal transmission.

Rise of FPD caused the end of the manufacture of CRT, and the achievement of the next generation master monitor using FPD device has become a pressing issue for broadcasting stations. Recently, FPD devices such as LCD and PDP are making certain progress in their characteristics, however they have not caught up with CRT yet. Moreover, FED which has almost ideal characteristics is unfortunately not at mass production stage now. Master monitor is the standard of the video quality evaluation expressed as an analog quantity in the final stage of various digital processing. Without persisting in LCDs, adoption of the device that truly fills the master monitor's demand is requested.
