All-optical switch controlled directly with light will be an indispensable component for the implementation of highspeed transmission network from the standpoint of ultrafast processing speed. The deep-ridge DFB waveguide having no structural polarization dependence can be utilized in the photonic network in which diverse types of polarization are launched. In this paper, the requirements of deep-ridge waveguide for polarization insensitivity are examined through semi-vector finite element approach, then, the device based on calculation results is fabricated. From the calculation results, it is possible to reduce polarization sensitivity by utilizing deep-ridge waveguide structure.

It is difficult to get an enough clearance for measurements of reflection coefficient of materials in long wavelength region. In this paper, a method for measuring reflection coefficient of materials set in the Frenel region is examined by analytical and experimental investigations. For a metal sheet, a good agreement obtained between the analysis by the physical optics and the finite differential time domain methods, and experimental result. Experiments using three kinds of wave absorbers were made in VHF range. Although there are some variance in reflection coefficient data of wave absorbers, it is considered that the experimental results show reasonable values.

Medium Frequency broadcasting is still a powerful tool for information transmission. But, on the other hand, high power radio waves cause errors in the normal operation of electronic devices inside buildings. So the knowledge of the shielding effect by the building and the distribution of electromagnetic field strength within it are necessary. The numerical simulation of electric field distribution inside of building structures in such environment gives a useful information at building designs. The paper describes the simulation results of this problem by using the finite differential time domain method. The results are confirmed by experiments using scale models.

Recently, there has been an increase in the number of electromagnetic noise sources in the environment. These could induce voltages on communication cables, resulting in damage to electronic systems. The paper describes the outdoor experimental results of the induced voltage measurements on a communication cable in an electromagnetic field. The goal of this paper is theoretical prediction of this induced voltage. The distribution circuit theorem and the reciprocal theorem are introduced to the analysis of this problem. The experiment is done by using the 10 pair communication cable and the termination boxes which are used in communication system in the real field. A fairly good agreement is obtained between the analytical and experimental results.

Remote sensing technology using the meteorological satellites and the earth resources satellites has become powerful tool for observation of earth environment. The paper describes the direct data acquisition system from the meteorological satellite NOAA set in Nihon University campus. The system consists of the 64 element array antenna, the receiver, the decoder, the mount controller and the data recorder. The system is controlled by the UNIX work-station and personal computers(Windows98). The antenna consisting of the disk coupled resonant antennas has a gain of 30.6 dBi. The stable data acquisition from the meteorological satellites has been realized.

A trial of miniaturization of an array antenna using frequency multipliers has been reported(1). In this cases, the array consists of monopole antennas as element antennas, so the receiving level of each antenna does not change at any directions. Of course the multipliers have no tracking capability of the input level change. The array utilizes the phase information only. Now if the frequency multiplier has the tracking capability of the imput level change, it allows us to apply any kinds of element antennas which have some directivity. Therefore the array antenna consisting of the directive element antennas would have a sharper beam. This paper describes the experimental results of a narrow element spacing array antenna using the level sensitive frequency multipliers(LSFM), which is consisted of PLL(Phase Looked Loop)circuits and level controllers. This array antenna shows the equivalent receiving patterns of the array antennas without the multipliers having the element spacing of the multiple function of "n"times.

We have described an analysis of a conductor-backed coplanar waveguide by using the spectral domain approach(SDA)and the finite difference time domain(FDTD)method. We have computed effective dielectric constants and characteristic impedances as a function of frequency for parameters of strip and slot widths by both methods. Those results are shown in figures and are compared for several parameters of conductor-backed coplanar waveguide.

The problem of coupled microstrip lines through a slot in common ground plane is analyzed. An arbitrary slot is approximated by many narrow rectangular slots. S-parameters for the structure are obtained by using the theory of multihole directional coupler. We made the coupler for different shapes of the slot and experimented. Analytical and experimental results of the coupling characteristics are shown in figures for some shapes of the slot. Experiment results are agreement with analytical results.

Recently, there has been a great deal of interest in cancer therapy. We consider cancer therapy from both sides of the thermal and non-thermal effects due to magnetic field irradiation. Cancer cells used in the experiments are LLC(Lewis Lung Carcinoma). Activity ratio is measured by using MTT method. We describe results which were obtained by non-thermal experiments. These results are shown in figures and considered. Furthermore, we do in vivo and in vitro experiments, and those results are described

The FDTD method is effective for analyzing characteristics of antennas and MMIC. Using the FDTD method, the screen antenna which arranges antenna elements on dielectric plate is analyzed. Many parameters for antenna such as width and thickness of dielectric substrate and positions of the elements can be used to modify the characteristics of the antenna. It is important to know how the parameters contribute to the variation of antenna's characteristics. Results obtained are useful for mobile communications.

We calculated quasi-periodic fluctuation phenomena model of TV reception signal which was interfered by aircraft scattering, and got similar wave form to observed data. We used radar cross section for coefficient of scatterd wave the intensity by aircraft and obtained satisfactory results. It was proved that asymmetric wave form indicates slant of flight course, and period of quasi-periodic fluctuation indicates distance between receiving point and aircraft.

There are many points of which must be clarified the characteristics of the rainfall to increase the reliability of the satellite communication Especially, there are various problems for the rainfall characteristic in the equation region. The rainfall intensity was observed at Bangkok(KMITL)in Thailand. The heavy rainfall were frequently observed in a short time. The rainfall characteristics of Japan and Thailand was clarified, and measures by which the reliability of the satellite communication was improved were examined.

It is planed that the digital terrestrial broadcasting begins from 2003 using the UHF band. The digital broadcasting is possible an excellent reception even under the place of a bad condition. We measured the propagation condition of UHF band broadcasting signals. Moreover, we examined the stability reception method of the UHF television broadcasting wave by the various antenna. It was confirmed that UHF band signals was able to receive with the VHF band antenna in the region of high receiving service area.

The efficiency-fractional bandwidth(EB)product has been used as a criterion of the evaluation of small dielectric loaded antennas(DLAs). The EB product seems appropriate to evaluate the goodness of the small antenna, because it is expressed as a simple ratio of radiation resistance to input reactance of such an electrically small antenna. Measurement of input impedance of such an electrically small antenna, however, is difficult by using a network analyzer because one needs to measure the small resistance of the antenna under much of uncertainty like residual systematic or drift errors. In this report, first, several DLAs with almost the same volume are compared with a bare dipole by using the EB product and it is found that some DLAs give enhancement of the EB product over the bare dipole. In addition, it seems that there is an optimum value of dielectric loading with lower permittivity to obtain the highest EB product. Next, to reduce the measurement errors, the antennas are matched to the transmission line with a stub tuner. Then the measured impedance was converted using S-matrix to give the antenna impedance. As a result, we can measure small resistance with small measurement errors.
