There is "90-degree optical path conversion" as a 1 of the key technology to Optical Interconnection for board-to-board and chip-to-chip. "90-degree optical path conversion" are done on mirror surface which processed the tip of Fiber into 45°, and optical coupling with the Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) is examined. Optical coupling was examined from the Ray-Trace Simulation and the experiment.

Introduction of an optical fiber to a Laser Doppler Velocimeter using self-mixing effect was investigated. But an irradiation beam spread from optical fiber induces broadening of the measured spectrum and disturbs precise measurement of the velocity. As a simple solution to suppress this broadening, attachment of a fiber-lens to the optical fiber end-face and using 45°-cut Fiber were studied theoretically and experimentally.

Remote sensing technology using the meteorological satellites and the earth resources satellites has become a powerful tool for the observation of the earth's environment. The direct data acquisition system from the meteorological satellite NOAA has been established in Nihon University campus. The stable data acquisition from the meteorological satellites has been realized. The paper describes the architecture of the data base and of the public distribution of the acquisition data through the World Wide Website. The policy of this system architecture stands on quick data processing, including ensuring the security of the data and the exclusion of artificial mistakes. The accumulation of received data is continuing to be opened to the public.

Recently, microwave remote sensing has become a strong tool for monitoring the surface of the earth. As a potential application, the monitoring of the surface distribution of soil moisture content is an important factor in hydrology. The differential scattering coefficient data obtained from a satellite borne scatterometer depends on the complex dielectric constant, which relates to the moisture content in the soil. The paper describes the results of the investigation of the soil moisture content characteristics of Kanto-Loam. In this paper the estimation results of the differential scattering coefficient depending on the roughness of the soil surface are reported. A fairly good agreement is obtained between the measured results and the theoretical results using the integral equation model proposed by F.T.Ulaby.

The paper describes analytical evaluation results of the indeuced voltage on a communication cable, which is paired with the grounded wire, set into an incoming radio wave. The distribution circuit theorem and the reciprocal theorem in antenna technology is introduced for analyzing this problem. The results are also confirmed by experimental measurements using a scale model. Although there is a difference of absolute field strength of a few dB between the analytical and the experimental results, a qualitative good agreement is obtained on the field distribution in the case of TM and TE incidence.

A method for dctecting the location of a point noise source is proposed. The measuring system consists of parallel transmission line sensors, a switching circuit and it's controller, and a receiver. So real time measurement is realized by using the proposed system at the frequency of 500 MHz. Further more, the paper reports a high sensitive variable frequency sensor. In order to expand the measuring band in lower frequency, variable capacitors are inserted into the feed points and the end point of the transmission lines. By adjusting the bias voltage, the system can be utilized the frequency range of 65〜90 MHz. The sensor yields a sensitivity of 30 dB higher than the normal transmission sensor with the same size, because the sensor matches the impedance of the coaxial feed line (50Ω).

Recent trend of incoming and outgoing international students, to and from Japan is described with emphasis on the recent statistics. Five years ago Japan was the number one country for international students in the U.S.A., but now it is the third country and is being surpassed by Korea. The author presents some insight into the future of international educational exchanges in Japan including some aspects related to international students in the author's university.
