We propose a digital transmission system for the satellite broadcasting using 12 GHz broadcasting satellite service (BSS) band. It is necessary for the system to provide the high quality and new digital services which have never emerged in the analog systems. In addition, it should take into account the improvement of the service grade to the current satellite broadcasting system since the current system has already more than ten million receivers. The new system introduces trellis coded 8PSK as a main modulation scheme to improve the spectrum efficiency for transmitting multi-channel HDTV, TMCC (Transmission Multiplex Configuration Control) signal as a flexible control to the modulation scheme, and a hierarchical transmission to secure the high service availability. Some necessary gate arrays for the demodulator suitable for the system have been developed.

A hierarchical transmission scheme improves the service continuity of the satellite ISDB (Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting) against heavy rain. In this paper, the coding scheme of base layer picture for digital HDTV broadcasting is discussed. It is required that the bit rate should be reduced to as low as possible within an acceptable picture quality, because strong error-correction and modulation scheme should be introduced in the base layer. In order to decide the bit rate of base layer picture, the relationship between bit rate and picture quality, display size, viewing distance, transition between low quality picture and high quality picture is clarified by means of subjective assessment. As a result at least 1.5 Mbps with MPEG2 is required for the bit rate of base layer picture in case of displaying it as a small window, under the condition that both the base layer picture quality and the unnaturalness due to layer transition are acceptable. 0.75 Mbps with MPEG1 is allowable if the unnaturalness of the layer transition is not so important.

We investigated the method of carrier recovery for multilevel QAM. To reduce hardware of carrier recovery, a frequency phaee control with the LMS algorithm which treats frequency domain as well as phase domain is proposed. We made performance analysis of the proposed LMS algorithm by computer simulation. Simulation results indicate that the performance of the frequency offset correction of the proposed LMS algorithm is improved, compared with that of the LMS algorithm. Moreover, simulation results show the acquisition performance of the proposed LMS algorithm.

A TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) scheme and a FDM (Frequency Division Multiplexing) scheme are proposed for hierarchical OFDM system. In this paper we propose a concept of the hierarchical system and show synchronization techniques for both a TDM system and a FDM system. We also show the BER performance of the developed FDM-OFDM system under Rayleigh fading for mobile reception.

OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex) is an efficient modulation method for the Digital Terrestrial Broadcasting. We have proposed FDM-OFDM scheme for hierarchical OFDM system and developed it. In this paper we show the result of experimental measurement of this system.
