ISDB-T (Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting-Terrestrial) aims at flexible hierarchical transmission in order to provide diversifying services supporting various receiving conditions. In this paper, a method to compose Transport Stream (TS) of MPEG-2 Systems for ISDB-T is proposed considering the decoding algorithm of receivers. In addition, a control signal for hierarchical transmission is also discussed including its transmission scheme.

SFN (Single Frequency Network) by using OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) modulation scheme is an essential technology for digital terrestrial broadcasting to ensure the effective use of frequencies. Field trials were conducted to investigate the transmission characteristics in SFN using two transmitters. This paper discusses the minimum usable field strength of DQPSK-OFDM and the coverage area of the transmitters in mobile reception, and the increase in area covered by SFN compared with by a conventional network. Additionally it is shown that the manmade noise deteriorates the BER performance of OFDM signals even in the UHF bands in urban area.

We previously proposed an MSL-TDM (Multi-Symbol-Length Time Division Multiplexing) OFDM scheme which multiplexes symbols with different lengths for mobile and fixed reception. We have developed an OFDM experimental modem using MSL-TDM to confirm fundamental performance of MSL-TDM. This paper describes the concept of MSL-TDM, the specification of the experimental modem and some results of indoor experiments. The results show that the system works well including synchronization function, and no difference is found between the measurement results of one hierarchical transmission and two hierarchical transmission.

In this paper, improvement of symbol error rate characteristics of OFDM using adaptive equalizer when a doppler shifted delayed wave exists. When a doppler shifted delayed wave exists. When a doppler shifted delayed wave exists, interchannel interference occurs and symbol error rate degrades as a doppler frequency increases. In this paper, by using null symbol, interferences by a doppler shifts are extracted and interference on neighbor sub-carrier is cancelled using it. By theoretical analysis, improvement of symbol error rate characteristics are confirmed.

Recently, the satellite broadcasting has been started with a lot of programs by digital method. Another systems of the digital broadcasting will be made a start near future. We have been studying digital terrestrial television systems using VHF and UHF bands. The radio link is very useful for mobile reception, but the received signal becomes worse caused by the reflected, diffracted and scattered waves from buildings. It is very important to clear the characteristics of the channel condition for mobile reception. In this paper, we describe the characteristics of the delayed waves analyzed with Doppler shift by using GHA (Generalized Harmonic Analysis).

An HDTV codec conforming to MPEG-2 MP@HL was developed to study digital HDTV broadcasting systems. The newly developed codec is expected to be applicable to various purposes ranging from program material transmission to broadcasting. In order to develop the digital broadcasting system, it is necessary to check the coded picture quality with diverse image sequences under different coding conditions in real time. Using the codec, a relationship between bit-rate and picture quality for the digital HDTV broadcasting has been identified through coding experiments and subjective evaluation tests.

To evaluate the service quality of digital Hi-Vision broadcasting, we study on the relationship between bit-rates and coded picture quality. We have developed the criticality measurement equipment for HDTV and measured criticality of Hi-Vision programs for one week. This paper reports the frequency of the criticality of Hi-Vision programs. Associating criticality with picture quality by subjective assessment tests, we conducted the statistical evaluation of picture degradation in digital Hi-Vision broadcasting.

Fuji Television Network, Inc. installed Total News Production System (FINDS) in its new Broadcast Center, and plans to begin its operation in summer, 1997. This paper explains about details of FINDS, design concept, components, system and operation. The designing of FINDS began in 1994 for the purpose of developing a new news production system, which integrated the technology of video compression, non-linear editing, video server and computer networks.

In those days, there is many broadcasting format. Adjusting this situation, Our Fuji Television designed and operate brand new production studio which is possible to product not only ordinary NTSC but also HDTV. We think, main purpose of this studio is NTSC, but it is possible to adapt to HDTV and EDTV. We decided to use D2 Serial signal (SMPTE 259M) or HD SDI as incoming and outgoing video signal from studio to create completedigital process system of whole station which is included transmission and camera system. But in order to be easy to transform video format, we installed HD digital video mixer and D1 video router as main equipment of this studio.

Fuji Televisions new broadcast center flacilties have recently been installed and are now in fully operational, starting in March 1997. The new broadcast center emptys a newly developed optical video/audio signal dietnbution network. This paper describes the system structure and performance of the optical network. A Wavelength-Division and Time Division hybrid multiplened (WD/TD) optical network has been applied to the broadcast center. This type of optical network is attractive for a broadcast center application, because of its large capecity, multiple format hexling and flexible operation capabilities. The optical network utiliaes 16-channel Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology and 16-channel Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) technology for 143Mbs NISC composite video signals (TDM high-way speed 229Gb/s). By using these technologiea the optical network distributes about 150 digital NTSC composite video combined with audio signals, together with about 15 HDTV signals (1.5Gb/s), to 20 atudins and control rooms. This new system of operation has drastically reduced the operator work load in the signal distribution center.

Fuji Television has developed digital SNG systems. In December 1996,the existing analog systems called F・SAT System was replaced by total digital systems and it is under operation in the new Broadcast Station. The system can transmit 4 TV programs in the 36MHz bandwidth. And at the same time the newly developed satellite telephone communication systems allocated within 36MHz was implemented for the emergency disaster and daily communications.
