Amorphous RE-TM alloys, such as TbFeCo, are suitable for high-density magnetic recording because they are easy to provide with large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We prepared magnetic recording media with these materials and tried to detect the leakage magnetic flux from this media as in the recent HDDs. As a writing method, we utilized the same method as used in MO drives. In consideration of magnetic properties of the media, it seems to be difficult to reconcile both the magneto-optical recording and the flux detection. We solved this problem by introducing magnetic bilayer media. Playback resolution is much improved compared with optical detection and we are expecting that a much higher density than MO disks is feasible.

Magneto-optical figure-of-merit parameters, which are defined by Q_F=∣θ_F∣T^<1/2>/d_M (θ_F: Faraday rotation, T: transmissivity, and d_M: Bi:YIG layre thickness) and Q_K=∣θ_K∣R^<1/2>(θ_K: Kerr rotation and R: reflectivity), of localized modes in 1D magneto-photonic crystals (1D-MPCs) with Bi-substituted YIG (Bi:YIG) films were analyzed theoretically. The results show that the localized modes in 1D-MPC with (SiO_2/SiN)^k/Bi;YIG/(SiN/SiO_2)^k structure exhibit considerably large values of both Q_F and Q_K: for instance, the first localized mode in the 1D-MPC with k=10 shows Q_F≈37(deg/mm) and Q_K≈4.5(deg), whose values are very attractive for various MO applications.

For investigating the electron state of rare earth/transition metal multilayers (RE/TM MLs), magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) was measured for Gd/Fe MLs and Tb/Fe MLs. 3d orbital moments of Fe calculated MCD were a little larger than that of bulk Fe. Tb/Fe MLs prepared in short bilayer period did not show Fe MCD spectra. This result is different from Gd/Fe MLs. MCD signal of Fe seems to depond not only on the structure, the neighboring RE atoms.

Dependences of domain wall and interface wall on temperature were simulated for the Domain Wall Displacement Detection, and the front process and the rear process were considered. For the front process, rapid decrease of the exchange-coupling contributes to small jitter of the wall displacement of the displacement layer. Magnitude of external magnetic field exists where the front process can arise and the rear process not in the displacement/switching/memory structure. For the rear process, the control layer disturbs that the interface wall spreads to the displacement layer, as a result, critical mark length for the ghost can be elongated in the displacement/control/switching/memory structure.

The correlation between activation volume (V_a) and media noise in high-density longitudinal recording media is investigated. Different methods for estimating the activation volumes are reviewed. Nonlinearity of magnetization decay with ln(t) indicates narrow distribution of energy barriers for the media studied, and the necessity for using a correct method for calculation of fluctuation field is emphasized. The activation volumes are shown to increase with decreasing reversing fields and the values of V_a at low fields (of a few hundred Oe) are significantly a few times higher than those at a field near the coercivity. Thus, the collective behavior of the magnetic grains is not only influenced by the intergranular interactions but also by the stray fields resulted from the bit transition region. The media noise of different media is closely correlated to the V_a values at low fields.

Magnetic and magneto-optical properties of (Co_<100-x>Fe_x)_<50>Pt_<50> alloy thin film were investigated for future high density magnetic or magneto-optical recording. A value of Ku on the order of 10^7erg/cc is found in Fe_<50>Pt_<50> alloy thin films. This large Ku has a closely relationship to ordering, and the M-O spectra of partially ordered phase are much different from that of disordered phase. The crystal structure of (Co_<43>Fe_<57>)_<54>Pt_<46> alloy thin film showed superlattice structure, and Ku was 1.8×10^7erg/cc. With increasing Fe content of this films, Ku and Ms tended to increase.

The magnetic and magneto-optical properties of TbFeCo/(Pt, Pd) multilayer films prepared by sputterdeposition have been studied. The absolute magnitude for the polar Kerr rotation angle of TbFeCo/Pt multilayers increases at ultraviolet photon energies. On the other hand, little contribution from Pd is found in the spectra of TbFeCo/Pd multilayers. The peak of ωσ_<xy>" at about 5 eV in TbFeCo/Pt multilayers reflects the behavior of FePt alloys and shows a much higher value than that of TbFeCo/Pd multilayers. This result implies that the difference of ωσ_<xy>" spectra between both multilayers reflects the difference in transitions between Pt 5d and Pd 4d states. A drastic increase in the magnetic moment and ωσ_<xy>" spectra suggest the existence of interfacial Fe-Pt and Fe-Pd alloys, and this possibility is supported by a simulation of the Kerr spectra for a proposed model of interfacial regions.
