    This paper presents the design and implementations of USPM system, a cohesive power management architecture which uses status of user's appliance usage to determine unnecessary power. Increase in power consumption has become a serious issue,resulting in the need to conserve power efficiently by rationally improving the usage of appliances. By considering the usage status of appliances, USPM detects unnecessary power consumption, and controls the appliance to reduce power consumption. By restoring the status of appliances based on the user's needs, USPM can reduce unnecessary power consumption without increasing the burden of the user.

    Using various handheld devices, users are able to receive various services from information terminals. Unfortunately, these terminals are built for specific handheld devices and services, and cannot be altered according to change in users' needs or circumstance. This paper proposes SmartTerminal, an information terminal not specific to a certain handheld devices or service, and SmartTerminal Framework, middleware for its construction. SmartTerminal Framework separates user interface and functions such as authentication from services, and provides them as modules. With this, a SmartTerminal can adapt to recomposition and addition of modules flexibly.

    With an expansion of the Broadband Internet and the Digital Broadcast, various information and media contents will flow into each home. Then each home will need such a device like the home server that handles those information, and on the other hand, the performance of Note PCs has been greatly improved so that they can be used as the TV display devices. As the first step toward to the home server, we have developed Wireless Home Media Station that has the capability of TV recording and play. It is connected to Note PCs through the wireless LAN and it makes possible to do TV play on the PCs as well as Internet connection.

    With the spread of Internet, we can find the various kind of Internet services and terminals. In the future, Ubiquitous Information infrastructure will allow information terminals to be used anytime, anywhere, by anyone. It will be more difficult for users to manage the Ubiquitous home network. So, we have investigated the functions of Home Gateway Server in point of the home netowrk management under Ubiquitous network, designed and constructed the prototype system.

    This paper introduces a wireless presentation system that allows PCs to be connected to multiple projectors using an IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN in order to transfer PC screen images to the projectors in real time. Compared with the current method which requires cable connections, this system allows the screen images of PCs located anywhere in the meeting room to be projected using multiple projectors, making it easy to change speakers. In addition, direct communication using the data link layer permits connections between PCs and projectors to be established with ease.

    We developed a wireless infrared digital transmission system that uses a data rate of 150 Mbps. The advantage of this system is not to interfere with the infrared remote control unit, wireless headphone, and other infrared communications. The target is low cost. Therefore, this system uses a high speed LED transmitting part and a PIN p hotodiode of the receiving part. The modulation method is 64QAM and its used frequency band is 30MHz. An UP/Down conversion, a modulator part and a demodulation part all use digital signal processing. Therefore, it is possible to make hardware deterioration at a minimum. The wireless infrared transmission distance reached over 20 m. This is sufficient enough for consumer use.

    We have developed a network-attached real-time watermarking system for Standard TV using VLIW-based media processor. The transmitter part of the system embeds watermarks to a picture, encodes it with MPEG, then transfers it to the receiver part via network. The receiver part decodes MPEG stream, and detects watermarks from the decoded picture. This watermarking system can be built into an on-line video delivery system with the broadband network.

    SIMD-type instructions and/or VLIW architecture are well-known features of high-performance processors. Although these features are effective for data-parallel algorithms, they have (almost) no effect for sequential algorithms such as encoding variable length codes. In order to address this issue, the media processor MAPCA has a co-processor for processing variable length code in addition to its 136-bit VLIW processor. Our prototype MPEG-4 encoder runs about 13% to 48% faster than that using only the VLIW processor on MAPCA.

    This paper describes a hardware design of a subset of the Internet protocol IP over IEEE1394 interface (IP over 1394) and its implementation on an FPGA. It evaluates the design by counting the hardware costs required for the implementation. It is intended for use in such applications as home networks, where transferring and processing digital AV data at low costs and by low power consumption is desirable. Using a system clock of 49.152MHz, we verified that packets sent from an application on top of the protocol stack were correctly received by the other protocol stack via IEEE1394 port at a transfer rate of 400 Mbps. We also verified communication behaviors of the design with an isochronous resource manager to reserve a channel prior to data transmissions. The hardware cost of the IP layer is 84% of the link layer's cost, meaning that the IP-over-1394 protocol stack can be realized by hardware by spending an extra cost less than that of the basic hardware which already exists.
