In IP networks, a series of round trip times is often fed to a minimum filter, which outputs the minimum among n recent sample values. This technique is indispensable in applications such as time synchronization and bandwidth measurement. The performance of a minimum filter is estimated by the difference between its output value and the true minimum of the round trip time; the performance is better if the difference is smaller. The performance of a minimum filter depends on the number of samples, among which the minimum value is selected. However, it is difficult to decide the optimal number of the samples beforehand because it depends on the conditions such as background traffic and measurement interval. This problem is solved by the adaptive minimum filter that changes the number of samples depending on the variation of measured values. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the adaptive minimum filter through experiment. As a result, it is shown that the adaptive minimum filter performs well independently of background traffic and measurement interval.

This paper presents a new version of TCP-Fusion supporting RTT (Round Trip Time) fairness in addition to throughput efficiency and friendliness to TCP-Reno. When multiple TCP flows having different RTT values compete, more bandwidth is unfairly allocated to the flow having smaller RTT. This means that a user with longer RTT may not be able to obtain sufficient bandwidth by the current methods. On the other hand, recent studies on the TCP congestion control to achieve RTT fairness and throughput efficiency are evolving actively. An example for RTT fairness is TCP-Libra and an example for throughput efficiency is Hybrid TCP congestion control. This paper focuses on Hybrid TCP and improves its RTT fairness by incorporating the ideas of TCP-Libra to its loss mode. Experiments are carried out to validate the proposed method and much better performances in RTT fairness and throughput are provided against conventional methods.

It has been difficult to estimate the performance of high-speed PLCs in actual homes and offices. The causes are that high-speed PLCs use indoor power-line cables which are not originally suitable for signal transmission as a communication medium, and their transmission characteristics are deeply influenced from the wiring topology of the power-line cables and the working statuses of home electric appliances which are connected to the same power-line cables. I have tried to calculate the transmission characteristics of indoor power-line cables based on their wiring topology and propagation constants, and to develop an estimation method of data communication performance of high-speed PLCs taking the influences of signal attenuation and the phase distortion into account. There was enough similarity between the calculated results by the newly developed method and the results of the actual measurement survey.

In this report, we investigate the influences of network latency on the easiness of work in a remote haptic instruction system by subjective assessment. In this system, a teacher teaches a student how to write characters. We have two cases. In one case, a pen is attached to only the student terminal, and video is transmitted from the student terminal to the teacher terminal. In the other case, a pen is attached to each of the two terminals, and video is transmitted bi-directionally between the terminals. In both cases, we make a comparison of two-way transmission and one-way transmission of the sense of force.

To providing high quality IPTV service for users, in-service quality management based on Quality of Experience (QoE) is important. In this paper, we proposed an audio quality estimation model contributing to in-service quality management of IPTV. We performed a subjective listening test to analyze relationships between QoE and quality parameters that are calculated from header information in received IP packets. We then developed an audio quality estimation model from the test results. In addition, we executed a verification test for the proposed model using unknown audio data, and the test results shows that the proposed model can estimate audio quality accurately.

IPTV services are being developed and provided. To provide these services with sufficient quality, we must properly evaluate and manage users' perceptual quality of service, i.e., Quality of Experience (QoE). To do this, we first proposed a video quality estimation model using the invalid frame. Invalid frame is defined as the total number of degraded frames in video sequences and derived by using video bit-stream information that relates to picture frame type. However, bit-stream information is often encrypted. We then established a packet-layer video quality estimation model, and a picture type estimation method using TS packet header information. Computational cost of the proposed method is high because this method used pattern matching technique. In this paper, we propose a light weight picture type estimation method and verify its validity.

There are many videos about sports. In sports videos, the motions carry much information about shots. This paper proposes the video retrieval system based on the motions. We have many criteria about sameness. The method retrieves videos based on the similarity of the all motions described in frames. The method gets the motions using the reliable motion estimation method, and make the 1-dimensional projections from the X motion, Y motion and the reliabilities. Resulting image has the 1-dimensional space axis and the 1-dimensional time axis. Using the images, the method retrieves shots as fast as the image retrievals do. This paper proposed the video retrieval method and shows the experiments about baseball games.

In this paper, we propose a new method of shape matching. Our proposed method is using the centriod of an object. There are several methods based on the centroid of an object. However, these methods are not robust to a deformation of the shape such as noise. In our method, the idea of shape context is used to deal with such problem. In Bull's eye test using the database MPEG7_CE_Shape1, the recognition rate is 84.46% and our result is more robust to noise than previous result based on the centroid of an object.

We propose a phase-scrambled image and an image matching method between phase-scrambled images. The proposed scrambling is motivated by visual protection of images and prevention of illegal image matching. Since the synchronized scrambling keeps the relative relation, image matching between phase-scrambled images by phase-only correlation is directly executed without descrambling. There is no effect of scrambling on image matching. The estimation values between phase-scrambled images can be obtained with the same accuracy as those of non-scrambled images.

An integrated system of info-communication and energy networks is proposed. The system assigns energy to used appliances appropriately based on the information that is collected, processed and managed by the info-communication and energy networks. In particular, the integrated system is supposed to be applied to home. In home, people have to grapple with consumed energy reduce more proactively and need to live within the upper limit of energy consumption imposed by themselves because of the global issue of climate change. The proposed system collects people's life patterns and manages their energy consumption based on the patterns not to deteriorate their quality of life with keeping the upper limit of energy consumption.

In this report, we deal with video server systems sharing consumer genarated video (CGV) contents for which a number of simultaneous accesses cannot be expected. In a technique proposed previously by the authors as an economic constitution method, we use IP (iSCSI) storage as a container of CGV to which the distance from a video server is not limited. The iSCSI storage is installed in the individual house and is connected to the video server with FTTH (Fibre To The Home) as access line via a high delay network. Under high delay environments, we constitute RAID to improve the rapidity and reliability of the data transmission, and simulation using NS-2 evaluates streaming video performance.

There have proposed several techniques which convert real photographs into pictrial art. Among various painting styles, this paper focuses on water-color paintings, and proposes an algorithm that generates water-color-like images from real photographs. The algorithm tries to realize features of water-color paintings by using some fundamental image processing techniques, some of which include a quantization of a color space, morphological operations, the distance transformation, alpha blending, and an edge superposition. The algorithm can simply generate water-color-like images.

We have developed "Ad-Lib System" which controls CG(Computer Graphics) characters in real-time with a keyboard using TVML(TV program Making Language) and the interactive mode of the TVML Player. Because the Ad-Lib System is real-time basis, a CG character can act interactively with human casts. This system uses script language, so it is possible to edit or modify the CG character's behavior on the production studio. In addition, it can generate CG character's lip-synching with human voice input in real-time. This system is reasonably compact because it works in a laptop computer, so this system is really user-friendly for the TV producers.

It intended that tacit knowledge in the movie that records expert users' or novice users' technique is changed into explicit knowledge. Then we developed the system that knowledge could be discovered and shared cooperatively in the organization based on the SECI model. We made the comparison experiment with the bulletin board to confirm whether this system is effective to the discovery of practical knowledge. As a result, we report that on the effect that the practical knack was able to be detected in the collaborative work.

Web conference systems are PC- and IP network-based multi-user, real-time and multi-location communication systems. They typically provide bi-directional audio-visual communication, text-chat, document sharing and other functions useful for distance collaborative works. Typical applications are internal company meetings among branch offices and the corporate headquarters, design meeting among the design center in Japan and factories in China, distance learning, and corporate training. Since the true broadband era started in the beginning of this century, the demand for cost-effective solution of communication connecting many locations has been increasing. In addition, the momentum of introducing distance conference systems and services in companies surged when the world encountered global problems such as SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) and the expansion of terrorism. With increasing demand for cost-effective communication, many systems and services have been introduced into the market. However, many of the systems and services failed to satisfy the user's fundamental need for "stable communication anytime anywhere". Currently only a few commercially available systems and services are still viable and continue to evolve. The author developed and commercialized one such commercially-successful system, named MeetingPlaza^<TM> which is currently available from NTT-IT Corp. This paper discusses the system architecture design of MeetingPlaza and emphasizes the key points that the author incorporated to make the product successful in the market.
