(1) Kidneys of 31 dogs on which the partial nephrectomy was performed were examined with reference to histological changes, from 1 hour to 30 days after the operation.
(2) In this study changes in the distant area from the wound of an opereted kidney and in the contralateral kidney were chiefly observed. In addition the distribution of Indian ink was microscopically observed.
(3) Histological changes in the distant area, from 1 hour to 5 days after the operation, were intracapsular and interstitial bleeding, ischemia of glomeruli, glomerulitis, and degenerative changes of tubuli, such as cloudy swelling and necrosis. These changes disappeared within 10 days.
(4) Though similar changes of slighter degree were observed in the contralateral kidneys, the restoration was more rapid than in the operated. And these changes disappeared within 7 days.
(5) It seems that these changes such as degenerative ones of tubuli are due not only to operative trauma, but also to postoperative changes of the intrarenal circulation, especially cortical ischemia.
(6) It required 30 days for wound healing of the kidney and cicatricial fibrosis was in. 2-3cm zone.
(7) There was no proof of compensatory hypertrophy.
(8) Microscopic examination of intrarenal distribution of Indian ink revealed the same result as in the 4th report.
