Ester-containing poly(diphenylacetylene) (
2) was synthesized by substitution of CH
3CO
2− with bromoethyl groups in the side chains of the polymer (
1). Hydrolysis of ester of
2 resulted in a polymer (
3) with hydroxy groups. Thiol-containing polymer (
5) was synthesized by hydrolysis of thiourea-containing polymer (
4). The carbon dioxide permeability coefficient (
PCO2) and separation factor (
PCO2/
PN2) of
2 were 230 barrer and 23, respectively. Polymer
3 showed good CO
2 separation, and the
PCO2 and
PCO2/
PN2 were 290 barrer and 26, respectively due to the suitable affinity of hydroxy groups to CO
2. In contrast, polymer
5 showed lower permeability and selectivity, and the
PCO2 and
PCO2/
PN2 were 130 barrer and 15, respectively. This can be explained by the fact that the presence of mercapto groups decreased CO
2 diffusivity because of strong interaction of mercapto groups with CO
2.
