The development of new and high efficient phosphor has been an important technology for the display industry. In order to overcome the remained problems of powder phosphor and lower the fabrication cost, we developed a novel technique for fabricating ZnO thin film phosphor on the glass substrate directly at the low temperature. This fabricated ZnO thin film phosphor has the promising features including higher coherency, uniformity, flatness regarding to the disadvantage of the power phosphor. Particularly, the ZnO thin film phosphor, showing high luminance of blue-green, was easily and precisely patterned on large area (φ100mm) by wet etching method.

ZnAl_2O_4 phosphor which shows ultra violet emission under the electron beam excitation has been investigated for the ultra violet emitting devices. In this work, we investigated the dependence of structure and the luminescence of ZnAl_2O_4 phosphor on firing condition which prepared by solid-phase reaction. The structure and the luminescence properties of the ZnAl_2O_4 were drastically changed by the firing conditions (firing temperature, atmosphere, and ZnO/α-Al_2O_3 molar ratio, etc.). From the results of XRD, PLE and CL measurements, it is thought that ZnAl_2O_4 has a bandgap of about 7eV and the UV emission is caused by oxygen vacancy and the energy level caused by Zn excess in the crystal.

It is researched that low temperature preparing process of thin film phosphors by laser annealing. Using phosphor is SrGa_2S_4:Eu^<2+>. Preparing process is that Ga_2S_3:Eu (1mol%) and SrS:Eu (2mol%) pellets were evaporated by two electron beams, and deposited on substrates. After deposition, pre-annealing at 500℃ is carried out, then Nd:YAG (355nm) laser is irradiated. In this study, to consider the preparation mechanism of SrGa_2S_4:Eu^<2+> by 355nm laser annealing, spectral transmittance of SrS:Eu and Ga_2S_3:Eu thin films were measured, and simulation of thermal distribution was carried out. At 355nm, transmittance of SrS is higher than Ga_2S_3, and according to simulation result, it was guessed that Ga_2S_3 absorbed laser energy mainly and heated. SrGa_2S_4:Eu^<2+> thin films were prepared by 355nm laser at 10Hz change from 8kHz, to know the relationship between laser frequency and influence to preparation of thin film by laser annealing. On 10Hz laser annealed samples have very few luminance, and it was found that these are almost amorphous by XRD result. It is guessed that laser of low frequency can not obtain hearings on each pulse, due to wide pulse length.

In order to investigate the local structure of Mn^<2+> ions in bright oxynitride phosphors γ-AlON:Mn,Mg, electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements have been carried out at room temperature. The ESR spectra consist of six prominent peaks and five weak doublet structures. The former and latter correspond to allowed- and forbidden-transitions, respectively. The ESR spectrum measured is in good agreement with those due to Mn^<2+> ions in MgAl_2O_4 spinet, suggesting that Mn^<2+> ions are coordinated by four oxygen ions. An appearance of the doublet structures reveals that there is additional distortion around Mn^<2+> ions, resulting from the existence of two kinds of anions, namely, oxygen and nitrogen, and aluminum vacancies.

In a phosphor synthesis of Y_3Al_5O_<12>:Ce (YAG:Ce) by a liquid phase reaction method, the state of Ce in precursors, intermediate products and completed phosphors are systematically investigated by X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) measurement. It has been found out that Ce is initially trivalent in the precursor. However, most of Ce are oxidized and might be segregated as an amorphous tetravalent cerium oxide from the yttrium compounds by firing in air atmosphere. By contrast, Eu stably remains at Y sites as trivalent even fired in air atmosphere. It concludes that the redox activity of luminescent centers dominates the incorporation of them into host lattices.

CuAlS_2:Mn red phosphor thin films have been prepared by multi-source deposition method by combining two electron-beam-guns evaporation using Cu metal and Al_2S_3:Mn source pellets and H_2S supply. It has been found that the compositional ratio of sulfur is very little even for the thin films prepared with enough much H_2S supply. The fact implies that sulfur is not efficiently incorporated into thin films during the deposition. To compensate the lack of sulfur, Al_2S_3:Mn pellets mixed with additional sulfur have been used as a evaporation source. The prepared thin films show a X-ray diffraction peak due to the CuAlS_2 (112) plane. The films also show a reddish-orange photoluminescence (PL) due to CuAlS_2:Mn, and a PL excitation spectra originating from the band-edge absorption of CuAlS_2.

Optical characterization of Ba_3Si_6O_<12>N_2Eu^<2+> (BSON) phosphor was carried out based on an internal quantum efficiency, photoluminescence (PL), and thermoluminescence (TL) measurements. Carrier trapping levels were detected by TL spectra, and thermal activation energy of each was determined by the relation between peak position and temperature gradient. An atmospheric annealing of the BSON phosphor increased the density of a carrier trapping level which corresponds to the secondary TL peak, and decreased the internal quantum efficiency. On the other hand, an annealing in a hydrogen atmosphere brought no increase in the density of the carrier trapping level, keeping high value of internal quantum efficiency.

SrGa_2S_4:Eu shows a saturated green luminescence and is expected to be one of green EL phosphor materials. Since a high burning temperature is required to crystallize SrGa_2S_4, it is hard to form SrGa_2S_4:Eu phosphor thin films on cheap glass substrates with a low softening temperature. To solve this problem, in this study, SrGa_2S_4:Eu phosphor thin films have been attempted to prepared by spin-coating method using submicron phosphor particles. Relatively uniform and dense SrGa_2S_4:Eu phosphor layers with a thickness of 1-3μm have been achieved by spin-coating using the particles having an average diameter of about 1μm. The obtained EL devices show a green luminescence with CIE color coordinates of (x,y)=(0.23,0.72), and the luminance under 1kHz driving is about 200cd/m^2.

In order to improve the quality of AlGaN-based crystals for deep-UV light emission, we studied photoluminescence (PL) of four MOCVD-grown AlGaN quantum wells from standpoints of growth temperature and In incorporation. A growth at 880℃ with In flow was shown to be best among them based on the comparative measurements on PL spectra, temperature and excitation density dependence. With increasing excitation density, a saturation of nonradiative recombination centers takes place and increases internal quantum efficiency. A simplified rate-equation analysis yielded weak carrier density dependence of nonradiative recombination constant for each sample. Detailed optimization of growth condition with a minute In incorporation is promising for improving the internal quantum efficiency.

Magnesium oxide (MgO) thin film is useful as the protective film for plasma display and the antireflective film. Therefore, the development of method which can prepare the high quality MgO thin film with low utility cost and environment-friendly is very important. Currently, almost all of the fabrication methods of MgO thin film are the techniques operated with vacuum state. The reason is that the direct growth to the glass substrate is very difficult because the high temperature above 500℃ which is not suitable for glass substrate due to the near glass transition temperatures is necessary to prepare the MgO thin film under the atmospheric pressure. Then, we tried making MgO thin film on the glass substrate with mist deposition. Material oxide thin films such as zinc oxide, gallium oxide, tin oxide, indium oxide, ferric oxide, and so on, can be prepared at atmospheric pressure with mist deposition. In this conference, we report on the conditions and the preparations of MgO thin films.

Optical elements for display are required more complex control of the incident light, therefore measurements and evaluations of three-dimensional surface shape become more important. However conventional measurement methods of the surface shape can't measure samples with very flat surface or steep slope accurately. In this study, we try to measure three-dimensional shape with SEM more accurately by making fine pattern with scattering nanoparticles. As a result, we show the relation between the magnification of the nanoparticles and the accuracy of the measurement, and confirm the validity of the measurement.

I focus on the mosquito noise appeared by AC quantization error in AC frequencies for DCT and propose its quantification and noise evaluation. From the results, it has to set to quantization errors less than 13, 9, and 7 contrast to the edge nodes 2, 3, and 4, respectively. It was clear that WDCT to arrest divergence of AC frequencies by improving within frequency resolution is realizable to 19.59% mosquito noise of DCT.

The thickness of the CaCO_3 layer formed on the surface of the CaMgO protective layer during high-temperature process in air was reduced by a new deposition conditions and increasing the concentration of MgO in the CaMgO protective layer. The discharge voltage of the panel stabilizes at low values (V_f=161V, V_<s min>=112V) within 40h of aging; this duration is remarkably short for a high-γ protective layer under the air annealing process.

If n_0=16, ?T becomes very small with the miss addressing rate less than 10^<-10>. This condition is realized if there are projection parts on the MgO layer.

At that case, field through voltage must be set less than two-thirds of the case with conventional a-Si TFT. Then, reducing parasitism capacitance between gate and source in TFT is useful method without reducing Vgh. To achieve it, self-alignment TFT should be introduced to the LCD with high mobility TFT like as TAOS TFT.

Polyvinyl-cinnamate (PVCi) is well known as a photo crosslinkable polymer to align liquid crystal (LC) molecules by a linearly polarized UV (LPUV) light exposure. In addition, it has been recognized that the easy axis is perpendicular to the rubbing direction, since sidechains of PVCi are oriented perpendicular to the main chains. However, we found that MBBA (N-p-methoxybenzylidene p-n-butylaniline) aligns parallel to the rubbing direction. In this study, the in-plane easy axis of LCs with different chemical structures has been investigated on the rubbed PVCi surface. We reported that LCs with and without polar groups aligned perpendicular and parallel to a rubbing direction on a rubbed PVCi surface, respectively. Easy axis control of the PVCi was realized by mixing LCs and an alignment patterning was successfully demonstrated on crosslinked and uncrosslinked surfaces by exposing with and without unpolarized UV light.

Insulating SiO_x film was deposited at low temperature with newly developed plasma source for low heat resistive substrate as for flexible display. The plasma was induced with electromagnetic field generated by two facing electrodes including magnets inside and covered with SiO_2 targets. The higher deposition rate was realized with the mixture of tetramethylsilane and oxygen as source gases. The insulating properties were obtained as 3×10^<-8>A/cm^2 at an electric field of 1MV/cm, and a breakdown voltage of 5MV/cm at 1×10^<-6>A/cm^2 for the film deposition rate at 11nm/min. High density plasma enhanced by magnetic field would be the hopeful solution for deposition of high deposition rate gate insulator at low temperature.

The OTFT backplane, which was formed on a glass substrate with a temporary adhesive layer, was composed of gate electrodes, polymer gate dielectrics, source/drain electrodes, an organic semiconductor layer and pixel electrodes. After formation of passivation layer and bonding of a plastic film on the surface of the backplane, it was peeled off the glass substrate. The electrical characteristics of the OTFT backplane were evaluated, before and after the backplane was transferred. We have confirmed that a transfer technology is effective in fabricating flexible displays.

To drive the plural OLEDs in the same luminance, the voltage driving is preferred to the current driving, but the voltage driving causes another non-uniform luminance problem due to the voltage drop on the electrode. To solve this problem, some calculated values which can compensate the luminous non-uniformity were added to the input data. This method was estimated with a practical panel.

We position the pairs of the red (R) and blue (B) pixels at a diagonal offset of one-half the pixel pitch from the green (G) pixels, alternating the position of the G pixels and the pair pixels for each field. The Nyquist frequency in both horizontal and vertical directions is doubled. The method also reduces flicker compared to methods with G, R, and B pixels at the same location and alternating at the same time. A Super Hi-vision projector was developed by this scanning method.

However, it has important problem of contrast reduction in a bright environment. We proposed a new front projection system for large screen by diffusing only projected light towards the viewing angle range and reflecting ambient light towards the other angle ranges. With this system, we realized a high quality and large size front projection display with a high contrast ratio even in a bright room.

DFD (Depth fused 3D) displays consist of two electronic display screens stacked in the direction of depth to show three-dimensionality. Front and rear screen images are produced by sharing the luminance of a 2D image depending on its depth. Displaying computer graphic (CG) images in real time has been and is still easy, because such images have the depth of information used to distribute the rendering luminance. However, since there is no depth information in photographed images, it has been difficult to display them three-dimensionally in real time. This report presents our results in displaying 3D photographed images to a DFD display system in real time using depth information from a range imaging camera.

We developed a novel lenticular lens, whose edge lines were modulated with a sinusoidal form, for a luminance enhanced LCD to reduce moire fringe between lenses and prism sheets and demonstrated the moire reduction to about 1/5 with the developed wobbled lenticular tens formed by a printing method.
