    Blue Scale has been used as the standard test sample for evaluation of color fastness to daylight ( JIS L 0841 ), ultraviolet carbon arc lamp light ( JIS L 0842 ), and xenon arc lamp light ( JIS L 0843 ). The importance of this Scale is recently increasing not only in textile field but also in other various fields. Capability and reproducibility of this Blue Scale have been already enough explored, however, its spectral characteristics and action spectrum have not yet enough investigated.
    In this research, the color fading behavior of Blue Scale by 9 kinds of fluorescent lamps ( 20W ) having different spectral distribution was quantitatively investigated.
    As the results, the relation between the fading and the wavelength was clearly recognized on the scales less than 3rd grade. The principal wavelength of radiation which cause the fading were 525nm and 610nm for 1st grade scale, 352nm, 525nm and 610nm for 2nd grade scale and 352nm for 3rd grade scale. In case of grading the samples by comparing with Blue Scale under 3rd grade, it should be noted that tendency of the grading is different according to the spectral composition irradiated by light sources.

    Poly(ethylene terephthalate) fibers were continuously drawn to high draw ratios under heating by CO2 laser irradiation. The structure of the drawn fiber was analyzed based on measurements of refractive index, wide-angle x-ray diffraction, and small-angle x-ray scattering. The average refractive index, birefringence, crystallite size, crystal orientation and the long period of the fiber structure were found to increase with the draw ratio. However, for fibers drawn to a final ratio of 6:1, neither the diameter of the laser beam, the feed speed, nor the laser power affected the fiber structure appreciably. The crystallite size and long period of a fiber drawn to a ratio of 4:1 were both altered more after annealing at fixed fiber length than for the 6:1 fiber. The lamellae structure inclination angle of samples drawn to both 6:1 and 4:1 was about 60°, decreasing after annealing to 50° for the 6:1-drawn samples and 30° for the 4:1-drawn samples.

    The mechanical properties of poly(ethylene terephthalate) fiber can be controlled over a wide range by the drawing process. We employed a CO2 laser to heat a running fiber rapidly and uniformly, allowing the fiber to be instantaneously drawn to a high draw ratio. Using this drawing process, we obtained high-performance poly(ethylene terephthalate) fibers from commercial-grade polymer (IV = 0.621 dl/g). These fibers had a tensile strength of 0.96 GPa, a Young's modulus of 19.2 GPa, a maximum elongation of 18%, and 1.2% boil-off shrinkage. A thermal mechanical analysis was performed for all drawn fibers, and it was found that the maximum shrinkage stress and the temperature of maximum shrinkage increased stepwise at draw ratios of between 5 and 6.

    Jute fibers are aggregated of single cells consisting of α-cellulose, which are cemented by lignin and hemicellulose. The surface features and the tensile strength of jute fibers hydrolyzed with commercial enzymes which are contained some of pectinase, hemicellulase, xylanase, laccase and cellulase were investigated using a polarized optical microscope, a fluorescent optical microscope, a scanning electron microscope and an Instron tensile tester to reveal the enzymatically modified surface topology and tensile characteristics. Ultrazyme, and Viscozyme removed the noncellulosic constituent such as lignin and hemicellulose existing on the surface of the fiber. The action of these mixed enzymes was limited only the fiber surface, with little changes observed on the yarn strength. The delignified fiber surfaces are not clean and smooth due to remain a part of the gummy matters. However, the treated yarns, after one-hour hydrolysis, had lost 15-25% breaking strength, suggesting that Denilite hydrolyzed the lignin in a layer called the middle lamella. On the other hand, Cellusoft L caused gradual deterioration the tensile strength of yarn with increasing the enzymatic treatment time. It was assumed with the observation of the changed surface topology that cellulase acted not only on the ultimate cells but on the gummy matters on the fiber surface, although not as much as Ultrazyme and Viscozyme did, and the cementing gummy matters in the middle lamella.

    Damages of SiOX layer on the SiOX deposited nylon 6 film caused by the Gelboflex tests, abrasion, and creasing were examined by dyeing, AFM observation and measurements of H2 permeation rates. The number and the extent of micro cracks on the SiOX layer increased with the repetition of Gelboflex and the H2 barrier property was deteriorated. Abrasion by the polishing paper caused a lot of long and deep scratches on the SiOX layer and the H2 barrier by SiOX layer was almost completely lost. Even mild rubbing by the cotton cloth damages the SiOX layer and the H2 barrier property of SiOX deposited nylon 6 film was more deteriorated with increasing number of rubbing. Creased SiOX deposited nylon 6 films have micro cracks on the creased line. Such damages caused by the Gelboflex tests, abrasion, and creasing were less serious when the SiOX layer on the SiOX deposited nylon 6 film was laminated with a polyethylene film. Even though the micro crack was caused on the SiOX layer by the large deformation, the polyethylene film laminated folds the SiOX layer and hinders further progress of cracks.

    The aim of this study was to correlate the surface morphology and gas barrier performance in terms of the elongational and bending strains imposed on the silicate (SiOX) deposited biaxially oriented 6 nylon films. The gas barrier property of the films to hydrogen was measured and the surface morphology of SiOX layer was investigated by using an atomic force microscopy. It was found for the elongational strain that at the strains less than 2.5%, SiOX layer was stretched with the substrate without being damaged and neither obvious cracks nor the deterioration of barrier property was observed. At the strains higher than 3%, SiOX layer no longer follows the deformation of nylon film and the linear cracks perpendicular to the stretching direction were produced on the SiOX layer. Consequently H2 permeabilities of films increased drastically. Bending of SiOX deposited nylon 6 films by winding them around the steel rods with various diameters produced similar cracks to those observed on the stretched film parallel to the winding direction and the barrier property of the film was deteriorated when the diameter of the rod is smaller than 2mm.
