    Sublimation/diffusion behavior of a microencapsuled dye (1-aminoanthraquinone(AAQ), C.I. Solvent Blue 35 and C.I. Disperse Red 50) into poly (ethylene terephthalate)(PET) film was evaluated applying the film roll method. Eight kinds of microcapsules (smaller than 15 μm in diameter) containing both dyestuff and ferromagnetic substance or only the dyestuff were prepared by using acrylate resin as capsul material. Fickian diffusion profiles of three kinds of dye were obtained both from free state and from microcapsules in the temperature range from 170 to 200°C. Hence, the diffusion coefficients D could be calculated using the equation (ln C=A−(χ2/4t)·1/D), where C is the concentration at distance χ from surface after time t and A is a constant. From the temperature dependence of the D, the activation energy (ΔE) for diffusion was calculated. ΔE for diffusion from microcapsules was a little larger than from free state. It was also found that there is no influence of ferromagnetic substance on diffusion. This fact indicates that the capsule wall affected as “a very low diffusion barrier”.

    Melt spinning of a fluorocarbon copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene was performed for the first time under various conditions with the take-up velocity up to 800 m min-1 and the draw ratio up to 2.5. The fine long filaments with diameters of 20-60μm were obtained. The molecular orientation in the fiber developed and the melting peak in the DSC thermogram sharpened with an increase in take-up velocity as well as in draw ratio. The mechanical properties of the fiber varied from 0.271 to 1.26 GPa in Young’s modulus, from 0.0285 to 0.137 GPa in the break stress and from 300 to 25% in the break strain under the spinning condition, respectively.

    Carbon fibers, to which large amounts of aquatic microorganisms adhere, may have a capability of decomposing the pollutants in water. Thus, we investigated the purification of polluted reservoir water using carbon fibers in a concrete circulating waterway. The circulating waterway was made from a reinforced concrete U-form gutter (30cm in depth, 30cm in width). This waterway was 10m in circumference and its capacity was 0.9m3. The water pumped up from the reservoir was circulated in the waterway and then aerated. In this work, we used 50-cm-long PAN-based carbon fibers (Toray T-300 12K). The carbon fibers were attached at one end to a frame, and the other end was free to move in the circulating water. A large amount of sludge adhered to the carbon fibers that were allowed to move freely in the waterway. The clarity of the treated water increased to above 100°. In an artificial circulating waterway, the addition of carbon fibers could reduce the concentrations of Ammonium-nitrogen and Phosphate-phosphorus throughout the duration of the experiment. Carbon fibers with high modulus and small diameter could effectively come into contact with polluted water by being free to move in the water.

    A new functional pyrrole-terminated lysine core-dendrimer (G3-R) in which the core part and the surface part were hydrophilic and lipophilic, respectively, was synthesized by condensing an amine-terminated third-generation lysine dendrimer with N-{{10-{4-[4-(12-carboxyl)dodecylenecarbonyloxy]biphenyleneoxy}decyl}}pyrrole (C12B10P). Structure analysis by 1H and 13C one- and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry demonstrated that the condensation gave a fully substituted G3-R with molecular weight of 5926. Phase transitions were determined by DSC and optical polarizing microscope measurements. However, no mesomorphic textures were observed. Molecular force field calculation by use of a Cache3.9 program showed that each C12B10P terminal group points outward three-dimensionally. Pyrrole moiety on the surface of the G3-R might be useful for surface conducting applications.

    Fibrous deoxyaminocelluloses (DACs) with degree of substitution by amino group up to 0.11 were prepared by the nucleophilic substitution of deoxybromocellulose (DBC), which had prepared from cotton fiber, with ammonia in dimethylsulfoxide. A certain amount of unsubstituted bromine residue remained in obtained DAC. Antibacterial activity of acetic acid salt of the fibrous DAC was examined on three bacteria. For Esherichia coli, DAC showed good antibacterial activity, although the bromine residue in DAC was deduced to contribute to the activity more than amino group. For Staphylococcus aureus, DAC showed excellent antibacterial activity, where the amino group in DAC contributed to the activity more than bromine residue. For Klebsiella pneumoniae, the antibacterial activity of DAC was rather lower than that for the former two bacteria, but still the activity was enough to pass JIS L 1902-1998 as a antibacterial fiber.
