    Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plain woven fabric was treated by the 172 nm ultraviolet (UV) excimer. From the tensile extension parameters and the surface reflectance, the UV impact damage to the fabric was confirmed to be negligibly small. The considerable increases in wettability and the surface free energy of the PET fiber were found by the contact angle measurement. The capillary wetting and the moisture absorption of the fabrics were successfully enhanced by the UV treatment. In addition, detergency and dyeability were found to improve after the UV treatment. Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the atomic force microscopy (AFM) showed that the UV irradiation to the PET fabrics increased oxygen concentration and roughness on the single fiber surfaces, leading to improve the above serviceability properties.

    This study aims to establish some guidelines for designing elastic tights with muscle-support performance that will reduce muscle load. Based on the results of our previous studies, we produced trial tights which had high vertical elastic from the anterior thigh over the patella to the anterior shank and could cover the soleus muscle. Once the trial tights were created, there was less difference than intended in the tensile properties between the trial tights and the normal tights. To compensate, we added elastic tape (up to 4 strips) to the trial tights to achieve the desired elastic strength. In the next stage, we produced some kinds of improved trial tights with the power-netting face and polyurethane film back. The effect of these tights on the leg muscles was examined by analyzing electromyograms (EMG) of some parts of leg muscle, which were measured while the subjects were walking, standing up, sitting down and jumping. We concluded that the most important results are as follows : 1) the moderate vertical tensile elastic is useful for reducing muscle load. 2) It is important that the tensile resistance of tights in the circumference of knees is low because of the need to bend one's knees easily. 3) If it is as strong as the power-net strip used in this study, the moderate space-width is necessary.

    Poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly(D-lactic acid) (PDLA) with high molecular weights were melt mixed in a special procedure into a blend which produced the stereocomplex without indicating any trace of the occurrence of the homo-crystal. The granular blend with high stereocomplex content was obtained by mixing PLLA and PDLA at a temperature between Tms of the homo-crystal and the stereocomplex. This blend produced the stereocomplex consistently even in the repeated melting-solidifying processes. The formation of the block-copolymer of L- and Dlactic acids suspected to occur during the blending at high temperature may act as either the nucleating agent of the stereocomplex crystal or the compatibilizing agent for PLLA and PDLA. The blend obtained was melt-spun into amorphous fibers. Some of the drawn fibers showed very broad WAXD reflections from the alpha-form crystal, which immediately transformed to the stereocomplex in the annealing process at elevated temperatures without relaxing the molecular orientation. The annealing under tension seemed to extend the tie molecules between lamella of the stereocomplex and the change in the structure significantly reflected the mechanical property.

    Microspheres of poly(p-oxycinnamoyl) (POC) were obtained by the polymerization of (E )-4- acetoxycinnamic acid in aromatic solvent at 320degree and a concentration of 1.5% without stirring via liquid-liquid phase separation of oligomers. In contrast to this, rod-like crystals were formed under shearing with more than 700 rpm. The obtained rod-like crystals were 10-15 um in length and 1.0-1.5 um in width having many thorns on the surface. The critical stirring speed for the onset of Taylor vortices was in agreement with 700 rpm and the crystallization of oligomers was hydrodynamically induced by the generation of Taylor vortices affording the rod-like crystals. Stirring influenced the morphology of POC significantly and this work provided a new procedure for the fabrication of fine fibers of intractable aromatic polymers.

    Nonwoven fabric composed of polyolefin fiber was treated to improve wettability by plasma produced in pores between fibers in it. Measurement of water soaking rate for discharge energies measured by lissajous figure repealed energy effect of surface modification was relatively high. This high effectiveness of modification was considered that the plasma region was restricted closed to fiber surface. Additionally, it was pointed that the magnitude of applied voltage was important to modify the hydrophobic surface into hydrophilic one homogeneously. ESCA measurement repealed the progress of wettability was caused by implantation of functional group including oxgen atom. The durability of hydrophilicity up to 100 centigrade was relatively high. The large extinguishment of hydrophilicity at high temperature was caused by movement of molecules by melt. In contrast, remaining of high O/C ratio and chemical shift of C1s spectra observed with ESCA suggested that turning functional groups into polymer bulk occurred.
