The surface of poly(aryl ether ether ketone) (PEEK) was modified using oxygen plasma treatment to improve the adhesive strength at Cu/PEEK interfaces. It is well known that plasma treatment results in etching and introduces functional groups to polymer surfaces. The effect of plasma treatment methods, which were ordinary plasma treatment and pulsed plasma treatment, on the adhesive strength was evaluated. The following three points were revealed; (1) oxygen plasma treatment enhanced the adhesive strength at Cu/PEEK interfaces; (2) oxygen plasma treatment introduced oxygen functional groups and produced an etching action at the interfaces. This etching action certainly contributed to the adhesive strength among these actions; (3) introduction of oxygen functional groups might also produce a synergetic effect with an etching action and this might result in stronger adhesion.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes in cold/warm thresholds of women with advancing age. Tamura et al. have developed a new device for measuring the cold/warm thresholds as a method of evaluating sensitivity of the human skin. By using the device, changes in the cold/warm thresholds in adult women were investigated. Sixty-eight healthy female subjects aged 20 to 88 years old wearing only under pants and brassiere lay in a supine position on a saran bed and their cold/warm thresholds were measured over 26 body regions under the condition of 28°C ambient temperature and 50%RH. The results showed that the cold/warm thresholds of the leg, foot and sole were large and those of the forehead, cheek, chin and palm were small for each generation. The cold/warm thresholds for the elderly women were larger than those for young women. In particular, the threshold of the leg was significantly larger for the elderly women than it was for the young women, and it increased with advancing age. The cold/warm thresholds of the leg, foot, and sole were found to be obviously age-dependent. The cold/warm threshold values of the trunk were between those of the face and lower extremities, with the exception of the anterior shoulder. As a result of principal component analysis, the first component was interpreted as a size factor which explained the intensity of the cold/warm threshold sensitivity of the whole body. The value of the first component of each subject increased with age in the 60's to the 80's. The second component obtained from the cold/warm thresholds analysis was interpreted as a factor which explained the contrast between the sensitivity of the anterior shoulder and chest, and buttock and foot for the cold sensation and the contrast between the sensitivity of the posterior leg and sole, and buttock and anterior neck for the warm sensation.

When the bulking promoter is added to pulp slurries at the wet end, the additive behaves like surface-active agent and partially prevents the formation of interfiber bonds in the handsheet. Therefore, an increase in paper thickness at the same basis weight could be performed. The tensile strength of the handsheets varied in proportion to the reduction of sheet density. Furthermore, considerable decreases in sheet density were observed for the acidic handsheets, compared with neutralized handsheets. The Page equation (1/T=1/F+1/B) was used to evaluate the strength contributions of single fiber and interfiber bond to tensile strength of handsheet. As a result, decreases in interfiber strength and only slight changes in zero-span tensile strength were obtained for both acidic and neutralized handsheets with addition of the bulking promoter. It was confirmed that the decrease in tensile strength of handsheet was dependent on the decrease in interfiber bond strength. Pore structures of the handsheets were characterized by mercury porosimetry. Addition of the bulking promoters caused increases in total pore volumes. Furthermore the major peak of control handsheet in the pore diameter 4 to 6μm region was broadened by addition of the bulking promoters. The light scattering coefficient of the handsheet reasonably increased because of its high porosity. Improvement of sheet thickness was confirmed by the SEM observation. The addition of the bulking promoters is capable of affecting not only in the interfibers but also in the pore structure of fiber wall.

Among many interesting characteristics of cotton fabrics, fine and soft handling should be most important ones, and it is quite sure that these characteristics are in the intimate relationship with the surface properties. Therefore it might be possible to develop new cotton fabrics with unique handling by chemical modification. In this research, we tried to modify of cotton fabrics by the use of TEMPO oxidation under the conditions which did not give serious strength loss and to evaluate the effect of TEMPO oxidation on cotton fabric. FT-IR spectra of oxidized cotton fabrics clearly indicated that the primary hydroxyl groups in cellulose molecules were oxidized to carboxyl groups by TEMPO oxidation. It was effective to apply two stage sequential treatment of TEMPO treatment at pH 9.5 and NaBH4 reduction to reduce the strength loss of cotton fabrics. Drape properties of TEMPO treated fabrics showed lower flexibility and higher stiffness.
