A pH dependence of absorption spectra of carthamin in aqueous solution was investigated by the principal component method. In aqueous solution near to neutral condition, the spectral change showed the existence of two components, A and B, the maximum absorption of which were at 520 and 500 nm, respectively. They seemed to correspond to F0 and Fx0 in silk cloth dyed from the neutral dye bath, as reported previously. The following equilibrium was set up between the components of A and B : A<-> B + H+ (.log K = 6.9). In acidic conditions, a small amount of the third component existed. On the other hand, the other components (D and D') existed in alkaline conditions. On the basis of the examination results, the acid-base equilibriums between these components were supposed, and the chemical species having different number of dissociated hydroxyl groups of carthamin were tentatively assigned to these components.

Sugar cane molasses was found to be very effective for bacterial cellulose production. The components of sugar cane molasses, such as sucrose, fructose, glucose, nitrogenous compounds, non-nitrogenous acids, nucleic acids, vitamins, other carbohydrates, minerals and black color substance were added individually or in combined forms into Hestrin-Schramm medium, and then their effects on bacterial cellulose production by Acetobacter xylinum ATCC 10245 were investigated. Addition of vitamins, amino acids, other carbohydrates, minerals and black color substance in the molasses into Hestrin-Schramm medium with mixture of sucrose and fructose as the carbon source, increased the bacterial cellulose yields to 210%, 193%, 186%, 160% and 255%, respectively. The black color substance was the most effective component to increase the bacterial cellulose production.

There are two common methods of evaluating skin irritancy caused by a product : the closed patch testing and the nitrocellulose-replica method (Kawai method). In the research, the evaluation of skin irritancy caused by a fiber treated with softeners was carried by out using the above-mentioned methods. As a result, the closed patch testing dose not reveal differences in skin irritancy resulting from the kind and the concentration of the treating agent to be used, and the difference of material. On the other hand, the Kawai method reveals differences caused by these factors, which made it possible to evaluate differences in skin irritancy. The Kawai method enables us to evaluate skin irritancy from subtle changes in the surface of the skin (B-stage, C-stage) to an inflammatory response such as erythema (D-stage). Therefore, it is thought that the Kawai method is more suitable for evaluating slight skin irritancy for textile products.
