We have been paying attention only to the magnitude of vertical vibration levels at the surface ground for estimation of public disturbances due to traffic and blasting vibration. Inhabitants are, however, more sensitive to the vibration inside their houses than outside them. Moreover, the house is apt to vibrate horizontally. This implies the neccessity of taking the structural response and the horizontal vibration into consideration when the vibration level inside of a house is discussed.
The purpose of this study is to investigate both the horizontal and the vertical vibration levels considering the response characteristics of the structure. In order to analyze the response characteristics of the structure from the vibration level, we adopted the methodology of the response spectrum. As the horizontal response is dominant in the vibration of the structure, especially in low frequency range, the importance of measuring the horizontal vibration is shown from the analyses performed.

The upheaved part of the cohesive ground due to compacted sand pilings was also improved by the same method and utilized as a part of the foundation soil of structures at the construction site of the Kansai International Airport Island.
The shape, strength, soil properties and settlement of the upheaved part were studied.
A method to predict the shape of the upheaved part was proposed and the measured shapes of the upheaval were compared with predicted ones.
The study results show that the upheaved part of the cohesive ground is strong enough to serve as a foundation for structures.

The stability of concrete-block work for the protection of the pier against the scour at flood is discussed by the way of the multivariate analysis and the judgement method of the stability for the concrete-block work is proposed.
For the work, the discriminant analysis is executed. In consequence, the discriminant function for the stability with the five variables is induced. Their variables are river width-depth ratio, river depth, friction velocity, river channel radius and block weight. While the adaptability limit about the discriminant function is also defined.
Lastly, the experimental heightening countermeasures of the stability is discussed, and the judgement method about the stability on the concrete-block work is proposed.

The ground surrounding a cavern generally shows not only continuous behaviours but also discontinuous behaviours of slip and spalling along various types of discontinuities.
Sakurai and his co-workers have proposed a method of back analysis of measured displacements by introducing the anisotropic parameters in stress-strain relationship, which enables to introduce such a discontinuous behaviour in the framework of continuum mechanics.
The authors have applied this method of back analysis to analyze the behaviours of a large underground cavern of the Cirata Hydroelectric Power Project in Indonesia.
In this paper the results obtained in this analysis are shown and discussed.

In order to study the actual states and tendencies of corrosion of steel structures in marine environments, some analyses were performed on the results of the investigations conducted in the various ports and the following results were obtained. Corrosion rate nearby L. W. L varied from structure to structure. The corrosion rate of steel pipe piles was a little larger than that of steel sheet piles. Intensive corrosion under mean low water level, so called concentrated corrosion, were found in many of the structures; the concentrated corrosion had a tendency to occur at steel pipe piles, with having high upper exposed end of steel members, in sea water of poor quality and in sea water with inflow of fresh water.

In recent years, the RCD construction method has become popular as a new concrete dam construction method in which superstiff-consistency lean concrete is compacted with vibrating rollers. It is an epoch-making, economical and safe method originally-developed in Japan. Dams of the same quality can be constructed in a shorter period by this method than by conventional methods. In the United States, a construction method similar to RCD has been developed in which superstiff-consistency lean concrete is also compacted with vibrating rollers. It is, however, basically very different from the RCD construction method in its design engineering and construction work, and is called the RCC construction method. The following text compares the RCD and the RCC construction methods and discusses the prospects of the RCD construction method optimization.

Trafficability properties of a bulldozer having rigid track belts which operates on a weak terrain at driving and braking states have been clarified analytically by use of a new energy balance method presented here. Especially, the relations between driving and braking force, drawbar-pull, effective braking force, sinkages of front idler and rear sprocket and slip ratio and the relations between eccentricity of resultant normal force and slip ratio have been analyzed from those energy balances between input energy, slip energy, drawbar-pull or effective braking force energy and compaction energy. Those analytical results have been agreed fairly well with the experimental test results for a small test vehicle running on a remolded weak silty loam terrain. And an optimum slip ratio to obtain a maximum productivity, or an optimum average contact pressure to obtain a maximum drawbar-pull could be determined.

This paper deals with the investigation of corrosion of concrete in four wastewater treatment plants which are located at coastal and hot spring regions. Various chemical analyses and experiments, which consist of analysis of treated wastewater and sludge, and experients of the reduction progress employing raw sludge, hydrogen sulfuric acid production using sulfuroxidizing bacteria, are conducted in order to clarify the corrosion environment to concrete. Hydrated cement minerals of the concrete taken from the above mentioned plants were also examined by the chemical analysis apparatus of XRD, DTA-TG, IR and so forth. Results to be emphasized among them were that corosion environment in both the sludge storage tank and the thickner tank in four plants was too severe for concrete to resist high concentration of sulfuric acid.

In the case that a mountain is cut for a road construction, it is necessary to select carefully the most safe, aesthetic, constructible slope protection method. In order to fulfill this need, the civil engineers may be assisted by the expert system. In the present paper, an expert system using a personal computer is constructed and evaluated through actual field data. An expert shell is used to construct easily the system. The factors for selecting the method are weighted by using AHP. The fuzzy theory is adopted for the engineering judgements.

Establishing a practical, correct and simple method of calculation of the thrust, which is among the fundamental problems in pipe-jacking, remained to be solved.
The recent advance in the technology as guided by mechanical shields of this branch of civil engineering, has rendered it possible (1) to stabilize the faces without dewatering or chemical grouting and (2) to dig tunnels more efficiently than before.
The authors have worked out a formula by which to calculate the thrust required in pipe-jacking based on
N-values, after having analysed a posteriori at several hundreds works, the relations of the actual thrusts and
N-values of the grounds.

This paper presents the estimation method for the sound pressure level and 1/3 octave band spectra of the low frequency sound radiated from bridges occurred owing to the bridge vibration excited by the passage of heavy vehicles. This estimation method involves as follows:
(1) Measureing the vibration acceleration level of the bridge.
(2) Calculating the radiation efficiency of the concrete slab.
(3) Calculating the distance attenuation of the low frequency sound.
Based on the estimated and measured results above mentioned, these indicate clearly that the proposed method can estimate the sound pressure level and 1/3 octave band spectra of the low frequency sound.

In Japan where mountains account for as much as 75% of the national land area, as express highways built in mountainous districts have been increasing in number, so the number of foundations built directly on steep slopes has also been increasing. However, practical methods for evaluating bearing capacity of such foundations are yet to be established. The authors have conducted various experiments and analytical research to establish a new method for designing spread foundations which are to be built on steep slopes, including “Dangiri Footing”, i. e., the footing with a stepping base. This paper discusses a new evaluating method for bearing capacity of spread foundations on slopes, which takes into consideration inclined loads and effects of seismic forces in the slope, and also proposes a new method for ascertaining the safety of such foundations.

Many arguments have been made on the thermal crack occurrence in general concrete structures, but study on the thermal crack occurrence in dam concrete is insufficient.
The purpose of the present investigation is to examine the evaluation of the thermal crack occurrence in dam concrete on the basis of actual measurements.
As a results, we obtained a satisfactory evaluation of the thermal crack occurrence considering the time duration of the sustained load in dam concrete.

The Kansai International Airport will be situated on Japan's first manmade island airport approximately 5km offshore of the Sennan district in Osaka. The airport island will be connected to the mainland by an access bridge which will be 4km long, handling both expressway and rail traffic.
This paper aims to present the insurance of access bridge covering construction risks and compensation to the planners of private-sector in public development project.

Demolition work of reinforced concrete buildings will increase markedly, thus entailing the need of a safer technique at lower cost. It is well known that explosive methods are the most effective to demolish concrete buildings with. But concrete buildings in Japan are supposed difficult to demolish, because they consist of powerfully reinforced beams and pillars and of many wall structures in order to endure seismic load. This study aimed to get basic data about the explosive demolition by various experiments in an existing concrete building. Experiments were made in two stages. Experiments in the first stage are to investigate the condition of blasting out members of the building. In the second stage, simple experiments concerning razing the building by blasting were made. From these experiments, the condition in which thin wall structures and beams are blasted out has been made clear, and the problem on razing the building with many wall structures by blasting has been made concrete.

In this paper, three issues were examined based on the various measurements observed at Mutsu-Ogawara Oil Storage Base.
(1) Stresses in RC-ring measured during water test.
Testing season affects the stress generated in RC-ring during water test.
(2) The relationship between the settlement of tank shell and the settlement of RC-ring.
A certain correlation exists between them.
(3) The relationship between the settlement and planar deformation of tank shell.
Elastic deformation of the shell subjected to the settlement of itself, causes planar deformation of tank shell.

This report describes the case history of airport earth work that was restricted by large (embankment volume 12.5×10

3), high embankment (
H=60m) and rapid construction (3.5 years).
The embankment zoning method was adopted to use the embankment material applied by the cutting material.
The features of this airport that are rolling compaction test, drainage method, distinction of cutting, quality control of embankment, settlement due to submergence, field observation and construction machine are explained.

Blasting is usually used in tunnelling in mountainous region. Nowadays, however, controlled blasting is often used because of vibration or air blast by the blasting. We fundamentally estimate and control the blasting vibration by a survey of blasting test. For that purpose, we use the equation of

PPV is the peak particle velocity,
D is the distance from the source and
W is the sum of the instantaneously detonating charge. Because we consider that
W is the charge within the same delay number in this equation, the reduction of vibration caused by a distribution of firing within the same delay number is not considered. Analyzing the blasting vibration records measured in a tunnelling in practice, we propose the blast vibration control method using probability theory which is based on the charge per each hole instead of the charge within the same delay number.

Non-blasting tunnelling methods in hard rock have become increasingly important especially in urban areas in Japan.
In this study, information about 296 patents concerning the tunnelling technique during the last 16 years was reviewed and discussed. The information was classified into three categories, namely, preparatory demolition technique, secondary demolition technique and a combination of these two. They were discussed from the points of efficiency in actual recent tunnelling and in future development.

The Yobuko-Ohashi Bridge, located in Yobuko Town, Saga Prefecture, is a 3-span continuous prestressed concrete cable-stayed road bridge with a center span of 250m, which connects an isolated island, Kabejima Island, to Kyushu. It is the longest-span concrete bridge in Japan. In construction of the superstructure, the girders were constructed by cast-in-place balanced cantilever method using travelers. And the deflection of girders, tensile forces in stay cables and stresses in girders, which are essential for prestressed concrete cable-stayed bridges, were monitored and adjusted rationally and promptly with the help of a new system using microcomputer. This report outlines the system used in this bridge construction project.

Akita National Oil Reserve Base which has a total storage capacity of 4.5 million kilolitres is now under construction in Oga city in Akita prefecture. In this report the civil engineering works of four in-ground oil tanks which have a capacity of 305000 kilolitres each are introduced.
The tanks are now near completion using the usual lining method with soldier pile and rock anchor retaining walls in a mudstone stratum. The excavation work, which has a diameter of 96 meters and a depth of 39 meters, is one of the largest vertical excavation works in Japan. Focuses are mainly in the introduction of the design concept, the analysis of monitering during the excavation, and the evaluation of the design concept.

Sugahara-Shirokita Oh-hashi, which is located at the northern part of OSAKA CITY, is 26.5m wide and nearly 1.4km length across YODO RIVER. The type of this main bridge is a single plane cable-stayed bridge with a central span of 238m and two side spans of 119m each. This paper gives an outline of design and construction for the cable-stayed bridge.
The main futures of this bridge are as follows:
(1) The bridge is not supported by the piers at its ends but is supported by the prestressed concrete bridge.
(2) Considering aesthetic design and aerodynamic stability, the slitted section was chosen for the pylon.
(3) Firstly, a central span is constructed by a staging method, secondly, the side spans are constructed by a cantilever erection method.

Boukawa bridge is located at the Boukawa forest road in Takanosu District Forest Office, Akita. This bridge is glued laminated grillage girder bridge with laminated deck panels and steel cross beam. In this bridge, water-borne preservative treatment were provided to main girders, deck panels and curb. The bridge elements were pressure-impregnated of 2% solution CCA1. The present paper is concerned with the influence of pressure-impregnated preservative treatment and asphalt pavement on the strengths for glued laminated timbers. Through the tests, the effect of pressure treatment on bonding strength is small and negligible, and also any deterioration of strength properties are hardly recognized in the impregnated glued laminated timbers.

Due to the recent imbalance in trade between U. S. A. and Japan, there is a strong political opinion in the U. S. A. to ask the government of Japan to open the domestic construction market to American contractors. The opening of the domestic construction market to American contractors will enormous effects on many fields of Japanese construction. Therefore, it is quite important and indeed necessary to study the principles relating to these differences between the Japanese and overseas construction industries.
Such principles will be clearly explained in “Management Style Theory” which has been developed in the U. S. A., and also the application of “the Theory of Psychological Types” established by the famous Swiss psychologist, C. G. Jung.

This study aims to propose a method to estimate the vibration level (
VL) of delayed blasting from its velocity wave. We consider that the wave is made of sequential impulsive waves. In the method, we first divide the velocity wave induced by delayed blasting into impulsive waves. Then, we calculate the
VLs for the individual impulsive velocity waves. Finally, the
VL of the delayed blasting wave is obtained from the
VLs of individual impulsive velocity waves taking into account the attenuation characteristic of the vibration level meter. It was found that the proposed method is sufficiently useful to estimate the tendency of the change with time and the magnitude of the
VL for recorded velocity waves induced by delayed blasting.

The present paper is concerned with the behavior of glued laminated grillage girder bridge with laminated deck panels and steel cross beam. The usual stiffness matrix method is used to investigate this problem. A method of analyzing the rigidity of cross beam is presented. Full scale experiments of Boukawa forest road bridge are studied experimentally and are compared with the numerical solutions. Through the comparison with model and field test results, the accuracy and the effeciency of this method may be verified.
