Practice-led research has recently been advocated in art and design academia internationally. This study aims to promote graduate students' capacity to conduct design practice-led research. We aimed to understand the learning situations and problems in conducting design practice-led research of 6 graduate students using the FTCF model, to find solutions for enhancing the students' learning, and to examine the improvement and effectiveness of the instruction. Using action research, the first cycle indicated 2 problematic aspects: the linguistic components and research methods, and the use of the FTCF model. The solutions were focused on the learning difficulties in the 2 categories. The second cycle showed that the students' competency regarding the 2 aspects clearly improved. The effectiveness of the methods is analyzed and discussed. Finally, we provide suggestions regarding directions for further research.

This study aims at the impacts of the Kinmen's historical development on its overall furniture development. The methods include Document Analysis and Ethnography Research. The results indicate that there are two certain times, the Qing Dynasty and the Quest, that influence the development. From a political perspective, the style of furniture was united due to the rule of the Qing Dynasty. In a social aspect, the size of furniture varied according to the ranks of the official. Multiple forms of furniture were observed in the houses of businessmen at the time, as well. The other period was the Quest while a lot of Kinmen residences travelled to the Southeast Asia and came back after becoming illustrious and built majestic "fan zi lou (foreign buildings)". They also brought back the popular furniture, which were stilled in these buildings, from the Southeast Asia and made the culture of Kinmen's furniture more various.

This paper analyzes popular user interface designs based on the characteristics of emotional design proposed by Norman in 2004, in order to assess the user interface of interactive eBooks. Based on grounded theory, acquired oral data by user testing and context records from 30 users. First, the outcome of coding was induced into five categories and then the whole context was constructed by taking values and satisfaction as the core category. Second, summaries of the process were induced into five impact factors: 1) rich visual effects to attract the user; 2) appropriate design patterns to guide the user; 3) intuitional operation patterns to make thing user-friendly; 4) perceptual interactive experiences to increase usage; and 5) enhancing values and satisfactions to establish pleasure. Finally, this paper discussed the key elements of the emotional design at the visceral, behavioral and reflective levels in the future development and improvement of interactive eBooks.

Recently, green buildings are an important design issue in Taiwan. The government strives to promote the good effects of such design, and hopes more and more buildings can be constructed as green buildings. In addition, green buildings are necessary for protecting the future environment. However, people's comprehension is a point of weakness; because government regulation, execution, and promotion in Taiwan are very inefficient, there have been many obstacles to develop green buildings in this country. This study investigates Taiwanese people's comprehension of green buildings and also discusses people's considerations, their preferences and obstacles to the popularization of green building development in Taiwan. As the results show, people in general are not satisfied with the information and policies that the government has provided to promote green buildings. How to spur people to be concerned about and execute green building is a big challenge to the Taiwan government. The results of the study reveal that the role of the government is essential to affect the development of green buildings in Taiwan.

During the process of the transformation and innovation of traditional culture and local characteristics, we can make old things fashionable through creative design. Therefore, understanding the design strategy for the global market and how to design local culture into innovative products are important research issues. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness evaluation index and design strategy on cultural design of consumer cognition or preference. This study was implemented in two phases. First, we undertook a preliminary survey by means of literature review and opinions from a group of experts, and selected representative product samples and evaluation indices from the three categories: traditional culture, local characteristics and innovative fashion. In the second phase, we analyzed the results of the questionnaire survey and found that "Design Performance" is the most important factor for evaluating cultural design products. Furthermore, it was found that participants could not identify with products that overemphasized "cultural characteristic."

Eudaimonic images can be conveyed through products. As people have awakened with regard to spiritual value, the paradigm informing product design has changed. Other than the basic demands of function and aesthetics, product design should return to the nature of bringing happiness to the people, pursuing design performance that conforms to this value. This study used eudaimonia as the starting point to describe the correlation between the philosophy of eudaimonia and product design. A focus group method and qualitative study were conducted to discover the consensus and divergent views among designers and users with regard to the expression of eudaimonic design and to construct a model for product design based on it. The research process was divided into the three parts: (1) A literature analysis focused on the philosophy of eudaimonia and product trends. (2) Designers and users were used as subjects and existing products were used as samples for dual-track focus groups. (3) Cross-referencing of the data and the literature were conducted based on the summarized results from the focus groups to verify the model's reasonableness. The results of this study could be used as a reference for product development and design practice in relevant industries. It is hoped that the guidance of eudaimonic design thinking could result in product design being brought closer to the needs of the people.

Designers can rely on inspiration to achieve creativity, but also bear the risk of being abandoned by such inspiration. Because novice designers are short of systematic methods and experience, they are usually concerned about a lack of inspiration throughout their designing processes. The Analytic Composition Method (ACM), which was developed to solve such a problem, provides references for teaching and learning basic graphic design. This study applies this method to teaching activities through constrained design tasks, and selects three examples to demonstrate the development and application of this method. The results show that using this method as a tool for graphic design enables various sources of inspiration to generate different modes of thinking and creative expression.

A quantitative, single usability measurement is useful for human-centered design. However, the measurement is commonly not sufficiently conducted upstream (design phase), but it is conducted downstream (evaluation phase) after design development. Therefore, in this article, we propose usability metrics and a severity rating method for use during the design development phase. With the aim to develop an easy method for quantifying usability based on current inspection methods (i.e., usability metrics based on inspection methods, or UMI), we investigated the various aspects of the proposed method. Then, the effectiveness of usability metrics was determined by experiment. We believe that the metrics and methods described in this article will be employed by usability practitioners, including human factor engineers, designers, and usability engineers.

This paper presents the analysis carried out on Shelf Ready Packaging (SRP) characteristics of the SRP samples collected from food retail stores in Japan and Thailand. In this study, there are two main purposes firstly: this study aims to universalize the vital SRP design specifications by comparing the SRP samples which are practically used in the two different countries: Japan and Thailand. Secondly, it aims to classify a set of SRPs which are being used in retail markets by Quantification Theory Type III and cluster analysis. The outcome revealed the similarity of SRP characteristics in two countries. The product information and logistics data are important features that must be shown at least on the two panels of SRP. There are five types of opening patterns among SRP samples in Japan and Thailand. They are "Half of front and half of top side opening", "Half of box opening", "Front and top side opening", "Top side and half of front side opening" and "Top side opening". Materials which have been used in SRP samples of both Japan and Thailand are card board box, corrugated box and plastic. Card board and corrugated board are flexibly employed with any kind of opening formats. In contrast, plastic suits to create the SRP in "Half of box opening" format, it has also been used to together with card board or corrugated board to create the SRP in the same opening format. The variety of SRP appeared in these two countries allows us to universalize and reconsider the SRP design specifications which could be taken forward to the SRP design in the current merchandising conditions.

Shelf Ready Packaging (SRP) refers to packaging that is designed to reduce the process of in-store operation; simultaneously it can help to enhance the customers shopping experience and provide benefits to the total supply chain. With these features, SRP has been adopted as an alternative principle for packaging design since it had been regarded as the best practice to improve working conditions in retail stores. However, relatively little researches were done about the SRP. In addition, under the terms and conditions of private use, most of foregoing studies are accomplished within the international trade companies. With this restricted knowledge, it is easy to find many design failures of SRP in the market. Hence, SRP design project was created to examine the problem of existing SRP in retail stores. The findings were used to define the SRP design solutions and propose practical ideas that could be taken forward to current merchandising conditions. Based on an exploration of SRP problems in retail outlets and the findings from SRP design project, the specific problems of existing SRP can classified into two categories: Impractical SRP and Improvised SRP. This study found that Improvised SRP provides practical ideas to develop SRP design, while Impractical SRP indicates the points to be concerned when designing SRP.

Digital information networks have become a globally accessible space for meaningful social interaction and collaboration. The Internet has enabled people to create and innovate together online, regardless of their physical location, geographical boundaries or cultural backgrounds. These conditions are used to exceptionally good creative advantage by online open-source software development (OSSD) projects and communities. OSSD communities share a collaborative ethos and approach to software development, but even in such information-rich and openly collaborative surroundings implementing design solutions is very challenging. Various design approaches have been attempted with inconsistent success. This field research investigates the social circumstances in OSSD communities which influence the implementation of design solutions, aiming to explain the observed ineptitude of designers to contribute design solutions to OSSD projects. Therefore, aiming towards a methodology of design fit for the open source paradigm, this paper proposes a set of heuristic techniques to improve a designer's ability to collaborate, contribute and design with and within an open-source development community with a desired positive outcome.

This research is focused on design considerations of manual wheelchairs. Although the general design principles of a manual wheelchair were already defined, the priorities and considerations of the users are still questionable and variable between different levels of Human Development countries. A standardized survey was administrated in Turkey and several High Human Development countries. For better understanding of the requirements, complications of the manual wheelchair users and the importance of wheelchair specifications were scaled. The proposed design specifications in survey were increased with the comments of the respondents. At last, general considerations of manual wheelchair design were categorized in five factors with sub-factors. By comparison these factors, wheelchair design requirements were suggested to match the expectations of disabled people in Turkey and HHD countries. This study provides the guidance for further research and design process.
