    Both additive and dominance genetic variances for body weight at 256 days (BW), age at first egg (SM), egg weight at 252 days of age (EW) and egg production efficiency between 169-280 days (EP) were estimated in one Rhode Island Red line (Y8), three White Leghorn lines (E1, E4 and S46) and one Recessive White Rock line (L17) which were selected at the National Livestock Improvement Center, Okazaki Station. The proportion range of the dominance variance to total genetic variance for EW, BW, SM and EP were 0.11 to 0.18, 0.03 to 0.42, 0.06 to 0.41, and 0.08 to 0.35, respectively, and large differences among lines were found. These proportion suggested that the dominance might affect the expression of EW except for E4 line, and for BW in almost all lines. In addition, as for the four traits in L17 line, the effects of dominance were found because heterosis due to dominance might take an important role in this line. It is necessary to consider the dominance effects in genetic evaluation for selected lines, especially for lines which originated from cross breeding.

    Heritabilities and genetic correlations between additive direct and maternal genetic effects for birth and calf-market weights in Japanese Black beef cattle were estimated by two-trait restricted maximum likelihood (REML) under animal models and the genetic trends were investigated. The data were collected from field in Iwate, Gifu and Kagoshima prefectures. Heritabilities of direct effects for birth and calf-market weights were estimated to be from 0.19 to 0.39 and from 0.25 to 0.30, respectively. The estimates of maternal heritabilities were smaller than those of direct heritabilities and ranged from 0.16 to 0.28 for birth weight and from 0.10 to 0.18 for calf-market weight. Genetic correlations between direct and maternal effects were estimated a range of -0.07 to 0.74 for birth weight and 0.03 to 0.53 for calf-market weight. There were no serious antagonistic genetic relationships between them. However, genetic trends of maternal effects showed decreased and steady changes in all analyzed prefectures. The results indicate that selection for maternal effects on early growth is possible but more attention must be paid on maternal ability to improve beef production efficiency.

    The morphological identification and ecological studies on the 3 subspecies of red jungle fowls were carried out in Thailand, Laos and Vietnam from 1994 to 1998. A total of 59 red jungle fowls and 47 hybrids with native chicken were collected and applied to the detailed morphological examination. For the ecological investigation, the hearing survey was performed at 55 localities. Fifty nine red jungle fowls were identified to 3 subspecies groups, Gallus gallus gallus with white earlobes, and G. g. spadiceus and G. g. jabouillei with red earlobes. The earlobe color was used as the most important index for the subspecies identification. Collecting places of individuals were also used as an effective index from the result of zoogeographical survey. There is an extensive zone of intergradation among the habitats of these 3 subspecies. The G. g. gallus inhabiting the continental Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam expresses pure white earlobes covered completely with white patch, and the G. g. gallus inhabiting deep south Thailand expresses incomplete white earlobes.Therefore, the names of G. g. gallus type C (Continental) and G. g. gallus type I (insular) are reasonable to these zoogeographically differentiated two groups of G. g. gallus.

    The goal of this study was to determine whether thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) injections increase the amount and constituents of milk in the bovine growth hormone (bGH) treated dairy cows. Each group of 4 Sarabi received daily injections of either saline, 5μg T3/kg BW, 50μg T4, /kg BW, 25μg bGH/kg BW, 5μg T3/kg BW plus 25μg bGH/kg or 50μg T4/kg BW plus 25μg bGH/kg. Blood samples were collected every other day on day 7 till day 15. Plasma T3, T4 and bGH concentrations were measured by double-antibody RIA. Milk samples were daily collected from day 1 till day 20. Injections of T3, T4 and bGH significantly increased the plasma T3, T4 and bGH level and the amount of milk by 7%, 18% and 24% respectively. Injections of bGH plus T4 significantly increased the amount of milk 34%. Protein, fat and lactose concentrations of milk were not changed among all animals in the different groups. The results indicated that T4 increased the amount and constituents of milk in the bGH treated dairy cows.

    To clarify the antiangiogenetic activity of chondromodulin-I (ChM-I), which is a cartilage-specific extracellular matrix (ECM) component, the effect of ChM-I on the four steps of angiogenesis were investigated in vitro. ChM-I markedly inhibited ECM invasion, the first step of angiogenesis, and migration of endothelial cells, the second step of angiogenesis. The proliferation of endothelial cells, the third step, was completely inhibited by ChM-I. Additionally, ChM-I suppressed the cell attachment of endothelial cells and caused the cells to undergo an apoptosis-like morphogenesis. In the final step, imperfect formation of tubelike cellular networks of endothelial cells was caused by ChM-I. ChM-I showed remarkable inhibitory effects on all four steps of angiogenesis in vitro, suggesting that ChM-I is a prominent regulator of the biological condition and that it would be a strong candidate as an antiangiogenic agent for biomedics.

    Model sausages made of various meat with or without milk, egg and soy as binder proteins and such meat component proteins as bovine serum albumin (BSA), chicken serum albumin (CSA) and bovine gelatin were examined for their reactivity to the IgE antibodies from food allergic patients by chemiluminescence ELISA and inhibition ELISA. The quite low reactivity of the aqueous extracts from the meat products without milk or egg proteins suggest that the products free from these proteins would be acceptable to the milk or egg-allergic patients. With IgE antibodies from meat-allergic patients, the reactivity of the extracts from rabbit and turkey sausages were significantly low. This would enable us to develop hypoallergenic meat products made of these raw meat. BSA, CSA and gelatin were suggested to be meat allergens, since the specificity of IgE antibodies from meat-allergic patient to these proteins was confirmed.

    In order to determine the localization of extracellular matrix components in bovine term placenta, the tissue distributions of collagen types I to XI in the amnion, smooth chorion, villous chorion and villi were examined by indirect immunofluorescence microscopy. Collagen types I, III, V, and VI were found in the stroma of the smooth chorion, villous chorion and villi and in the compact layer of the amnion. Type II collagen, which was thought to be present only in cartilage, was found to be distributed in the epithelium of the amnion, stroma of the chorion and trophoblast of the villous chorion. Basement membrane components, type IV and VII collagens, were found to be located not only in the basement membrane but also in the epithelium and compact layer of the amnion. Additionally, type VI collagen was found to be located in the stroma of smooth chorion, and type VII collagen was found to be distributed in the trophoblast layer of the villous chorion. Types VIII, IX, X and XI collagens were found, for the first time, to be distributed in the trophoblast layer, amnion and chorionic epithelium as well as in the blood vessel walls of the chorion. Our results indicated that the compact layer of the amnion contained various types of collagen (I-IX) with various arrangements. However, the fibroblast layer of the amnion contained collagen types III, V and VI but type I collagen could not be observed. The blood vessel wall of the chorion contained all of the types of collagen examined in this study.

    Behavioral changes of Japanese wild boars to the person in attendance during the pre-and post-farrowing periods were studied. Tests were carried out twice a week. Responses of 6 females to the attendant during the pre-and post-farrowing periods were recorded when he stood in front of the door of the farrowing pen for 10sec. The responses of wild boars when they watched the person were subjectively graded. The Friedman test was performed to clarify the difference of responses between the pre-and post-farrowing stages. In the pre-farrowing period, they showed affiliative behavior (not agonistic and not avoidance, like ignoring the person in attendance) or rather avoidance behavior. After farrowing, they tended to be significantly (P<0.01) agonistic (performed pawing, rush, head butting and vocalization of threat). However about two weeks after farrowing, they began to be affiliative to a human again.

    Four lamb twin sets were divided into two treatment groups for 7 days of handling at the age of 4 days. Gentled lambs were handled for 10min in the suckling pen during morning routines. Other lambs of their twins were ignored when they approached the handler. The ease of handling in each lamb was assessed once a week from 2 to 16 weeks of age using a five-scale score in five components of the weighing procedures: chase, capture, haul, restraint and release. The synthetic obedient scores based upon those scores in the components were calculated; the lower the score, the more obedient the animal. Occurrence of bleating during the procedures was counted. The synthetic obedient scores (Mean±SD) of gentled and ignored lambs were 4.4±3.0 and 9.6±4.4 (P<0.01), respectively. This result confirmed that a brief gentling of the lambs for the first 10 days after birth can improve their subsequent ease of handling. It was also indicated that the ease of handling could be emotionally improved by reducing a lamb's fear of humans and/or aversion to isolation. Gentling at age 4-10 days had, on the other hand, no apparent effect on body weight gain and the number of bleats reflecting the expression of a high level of fear.

    Carboxypeptidase A was purified by about 59-fold with an overall recovery of 3.5% from chicken pancreas. The enzyme occurs as a monomer and has a molecular weight of about 34, 000 as estimated by polyacrylamidegel electrophoresis (PAGE) and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS)-PAGE. The enzyme was stable below 55°C, and the optimal temperature was approximately 45°C. The activity of the enzyme was stable in the range of pH8.0-11.0, and was optimal about pH9. The Michaelis constant (Km) value for hppuryl-L-phenylalanine was estimated to be 0.11mM. The isoelectric point of the enzyme was at pH6.7. Although the activity of the enzyme was not inhibited by soybean trypsin inhibitor or phenylmethanesulfonyl fluoride, it was inhibited by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, ophenanthroline, 8-hydroxyquinoline and potato carboxypeptidase inhibitor.

Although the activity of the enzyme was not inhibited by cobalt chloride, soybean trypsin inhibitor or phenylmethanesulfonyl fluoride, it was inhibited by o-phenanthroline, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, 8-hydroxyquinoline and cadmium acetate.
