In speech research, it is well-known that formant frequency is one of the most dominant factors in auditory perception of speech. The main objective of this paper is to calculate the perceptual significance(weight coefficient)of the harmonic components of synthetic sounds with harmonic structure and to reveal the quantitative relation between the weight coefficients of different phonemes. Our method is based on the least-sequares optimization of the correspondence between the psychological space and physical space of sample sounds, and is composed of the following three steps:1)listening test, 2)metricalization of the psychological space, 3)solving the problem of the correspondence between the psychological space and physical space. New original ideas are employed in the operation at every step. The weight coeficients of five vowel-like sounds/a/, /i/, /u/, /e/, /o/and an unusual sound like/ae/are obtained according to the proposed method, and their relation and difference are discussed quantitatively.
