The pistol used for a starting signal in athletic games is often employed as a sound source for the measurement of reveberation time in rooms, but the acoustical properties of such a sound have not yet been examined fully. This paper describes the practical and essential data on the acoustical properties of the pistol report used as a handy sound source. The waveform, sound pressure and propagation time of the sound are investigated, and the results obtained by frequency analyses through octave filters are discussed.
