    Viral multiplication is strictly intracellular, hence we have to consider as its essential process the production of viral materials within virus infected or virus carrying cells.
    The process of viral infection and multiplication was described. These events will be considered in termes of the following steps: absorption, penetration, change to non-infective form, replication of virus subunits, assembly of subunits or maturation, extrusion and cell lysis.
    The activity of neutralizing antibody and interferon on viral immunity was discussed. Furthermore, the problems of humoral and cellular immunity on viral infection were presented.
    Finally, it was emphasized that relationships between virus and carcinogenesis will suggest a important problems in analysis of the mechanisms of carcinogenesis.

    Seven cases of nonspecific encephalomyelitis were accumulated at our Hospital since 1960.
    The first case was encountered in 1960, three in 1963, three in 1964, respectively. Five males and two females were affected in our series, contrary to the usual statement of female predominance of the disease.
    Diarrhea was noted in six out of seven, and remaining one had vomitting.
    Two patients were discharged in excellent condition, but the remainders left residual symptoms.

    In carrying out the neutralization test described by Rowe and associates, difficulty in obtaining repeatable results was often encountered. Some of the factors which seem to cause the difficulty were examined in type 2 and type 4 adenoviruses. Two significant factors which exercise influence on the results are the number of Hela cells put in the tube and the amount of virus antigen to be added. When the count of Hela cells was 2-fold increased in the presence of a constant amount of antigen, 2-fold higher titers of the neutralizing antibody were obtained, though the degree of difference was greater in type 4 than type 2. 2-fold increase in the amount of antigen caused 2-fold decrease in the antibody titer. In this case greater difference was found in type 2 than in type 4. Preincubation time in fixation of the serum and the virus antigen is considered less than 5 minutes at 37°C, and the antibody titer was not affected by the time.

    Neutralizing antibody titer in serum against to several types of enteroviruses were examined in a remote area of Sannai (Kamuenai Mura, Furuu Gun, Hokkaido).
    Serums were taken from 100 pupils of Sannai Primary School.
    We compared the result with those obtained in other districts of Hokkaido, and got the following findings.
    1. Neutralizing antibody to Polio I was obtained at almost the same rate to other districts (as high as 96%).
    2. Among Cox, viruses, the results showed no difinite tendency.
    3. Among ECHO, viruses, except to type 1, , the result was the highest of all.
    4. The number of antibodies in each individual were equal among Cox, virus, while were more among ECHO. viruses.

    Instillation of 5% solution of ABOB yielded favourable results in 61 cases of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis. This solution was used every one hour during daytime and every 2 hours at night.
    The duration of treatment was 5.2 days on average.
    The incidence of complicating keratitis was 19.2%. No irritation or side effect was seen.
    The sooner we used this solution, the better result we got.

    I visited some institutes, medical schools and hospitals in the United States of Amenca, Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and France, and observed and studied the way of treating the specimen from a patient who seems to be suffering from virus disease, and the activity of doctors who are interested in virus disease. I would like to enumarate some subjects which seem to be necessary for improving the way in the diagnosis and treatment and also control of the virus disease in Japan.
    1) It is necessary to found the central supply laboratory where they produce reagents and culture media which are used for routine work in the diagnostic laboratories, and also the reference laboratory where they identify a virus which will be isolated in the diagnostic laboratory and difficult to be identified in the latter. The central supply and reference laboratory and also diagnostic laboratories should belong to the Government, butt some kinds of reagent and culture media may be made at the laboratory of the company which is related to the central laboratory.
    2) So far as the virus disease is concerned, laboratory work is very important as well as clinical examination of the patient. A physician who is interested in the virus disease should be well versed in the laboratory work.
    3) I hope that the budget for diagnostic examination of specimen in the diagnostic laboratory comes from the Government and the tests are free of charge to the patient.

    Discussions regarding the virus laboratory in the National Hospital at present and in future are as follows:
    1. The viral diseases should be examined in the National Hospital are considered to be Japanese encephalitis, lymphocytic choriomeningitis, polio, coxackie, ECHO, influenza, parainfluenza, mumps, adeno virus infection, respiratory syncytial, rhino virus infections, measles, rubella, varicella, herpes, infections mononucleosis, rckettsial infectiosn, and primary atypical pneumonia.
    2. The instruments should be equipped in the laboratory are mentioned. The route of supplying the virus strains and antisera for typing, cells, media and reagents are discussed.
    A number of the staffs, technologists, and assistants in the laboratory is also discussed.
    3. The system of co-operation between the virus laboratories in the National Hospitals and those of the Universities and/or Public Health Institutes locating every districts should be established as soon as possible.
