This is to report the deformity of thorax and mediastinum after operation of thoracoplasty by X-ray cross section examination.
17 patients who were operated by Semb's technique, 12 or 24 months ago, were rotatory cross section radiographed according to the apparatus and technique reported in the Tohoku j. Exp. Med. Vol.52, No.i &. 2, 1952.
The results are as follows:
While the pulmonary field in the x-ray cross section of 11 patients who received entrirely removal of ribs from costo-vertebral joints showed contractions from the front, from the lateral and especially from the back, on the other hand that of the other 6 patients who received partial removal of ribs showed slighter contractions from the back.
Displacement of mediastinal organs to the not-operated side was observed in all cases.
The degree of displcement, however, was not identical.
While trachea was completely displaced to the not-operated side, aorta and heart were not displaced in case of left side operetion. In cases of right side operation, the displacements were observed reversly;i e., trachea did not displace, but aorta and heart were displaced to the not-operated side.
As for oesophagus, aorta descendens and aorta thoracicus there were no displacement of them
