A novel implementation of the complete all-digital M-b successive approximation register-controlled delay-locked loop (SAR DLL) is presented with wide-range, reduced hardware overhead and close to 50% duty cycle. The proposed SAR DLL adopts the digital-controlled resettable delay line to achieve the ultra fast-locking and eliminate the harmonic-locking issue of the conventional SAR ADDLL in wide-range application. All design units are first described in verilog, and then mapped to silicon using the SMIC 0.18μm CMOS Artisan standard cell library.

A novel compact monopole antenna for WLAN and WiMAX applications is presented. By properly etching two open-ended inverted L-shaped slots on the radiation patch, three separated resonances with effective bandwidth enhancement can be obtained. The overall dimension of the proposed antenna is only 29 (L) × 10 (W) × 1.6 (H)mm3. Experimental results show that the antenna provides three impedance bandwidth of 80MHz (2.4-2.48GHz), 420MHz (3.28-3.7GHz) and 600MHz (5.23-5.83GHz). Good radiation patterns and applicable gains are also obtained across the operating bands. The proposed antenna is thus suitable for wireless communications systems.

This paper develops a realistic battery model that is combined with transmitting signal energy and circuit power consumption, and applies it to wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Then, we calculate the critical values of distances of the source-destination node pairs without considering the relay path. Meanwhile, we intuitively present the relay area and the difference of energy consumption between the single-hop direct path and the multi-hop relay path. Several results give the criterion for the selection of single-hop direct path or the multi-hop relay path to save energy.

An 1.5V CMOS voltage-mode MIN circuit with 3N+1 complexity and 10mV/10ns corner error is presented. The proposed approach uses a low impedance configuration to operate with low voltage supply requirements and without the need of low-voltage techniques with large area requirements. The basic cell and a LTA circuit prototype were simulated, fabricated and characterized using a double poly, three metal layers 0.5µm CMOS technology from ON SEMI foundry.

A novel current controlled CMOS ring oscillator is presented in this paper. Specially circuit structure and transistor parameters design is used to obtain good temperature coefficient. The designed ring oscillator circuit has been used in a CMOS step-up switching regulator controller which has been implemented using a 0.5μm double poly double metal CMOS technology. The test result shows that the frequency is about 1.2MHz and the error (Δf/f) is about 3.5% in the temperature range −20-100°C. The circuit is quite suitable for DC-DC converters.

We demonstrate the monolithic integration of an electro-thermal beam deflector based on a slow-light Bragg reflector waveguide with a VCSEL for the first time. The slow-light mode is laterally exited from a VCSEL and is directly coupled to the slow-light waveguide. The chip size is smaller than 300μm. The fabrication process is the same as that of conventional VCSELs. Continuous electro-thermal beam steering of over 9° with a diffraction-limited divergence angle of 2.2° is obtained. In addition, a potential in compact and high-resolution on-chip beam deflectors is suggested.
