α^4-Norpyridoxine (4-NOP) inhibited the growth of Saccharomyces carlsbergensis 4228 in the vitamin B_1- and vitamin B_6- free media. The concentration of 4-NOP required to produce 50% inhibition was 3.3×10^<-8>M. This inhibitory activity was specific for 4-NOP, while 4-deoxypyridoxine and other 4-NOP substitutes were inactive. 4-NOP showed no influence on vitamin B_6 biosynthesis in the cells, different from vitamin B_1. On the contrary, higher vitamin B_6 levels were observed in the cells grown in the presence of 4-NOP, and the ratio of free to esterified vitamin B_6 was much higher. It seemed, therefore, that 4-NOP inhibited the utilization of vitamin B_6 in the cells, presumably at the site of phosphorylation as well as coenzyme action.

The effect of pancreatic juice on vitamin B_12 absorption was studied in dogs. It was found that dog gastric juice as well as pancreatic juice contain vitamin B_12 binding proteins which differ in the elution pattern on DEAE-cellulose columns, the former being eluted at much lower sodium chloride concentrations. When radio-active vitamin B_12 was fed or instilled in the proximal bowel and vitamin B_12 recovered at different bowel levels, it was found that vitamin B_12-protein complex behaved like gastric juice binder in the proximal bowel and like pancreatic binder in the distal. In vitro digestion of gastric binder with pancreatic juice altered vitamin B_12-protein complex in such a way that elution pattern became similar to that of pancreatic juice. It was also shown that the change was not due to transfer of vitamin B_12 from gastric binder to pancreatic binder. Trypsin digestion had similar effect on gastric binder, and Sephadex G-200 gel-filtration demonstrated reduction in the molecular size. In the dog, vitamin B_12 first bound to gastric binder undergoes chemical changes in the bowel and becomes a readily absorbable form in the distal bowel.

The liver extract of rabbit, fishes and shellfishes had ascorbate 2-sulfate (AsS) sulfohydrolase activity. The activity of fishes was lower than that of rabbit, and the activity of shellfishes was relatively higher than that of rabbit. AsS sulfohydrolase was purified by using ammonium sulfate fractionation and DEAE-cellulose column chromatography. AsS sulfohydrolase in the liver of rabbit and yellow tail was co-purified with arylsulfatase a, and these enzymes were inhibited by silver ion and copper ion. These results suggest strongly that AsS sulfohydrolase would be identical with arylsulfatase a in the liver of rabbit and yellow tail. AsS sulfohydrolase in the internal organ of scallop was co-purified with arylsulfatase c, which was dissimilar to AsS sulfohydrolase in the liver of rabbit and yellow tail. This enzyme was inhibited by cyanide. These facts provide confirmative evidences that AsS sulfohydrolase would be identical with arylsulfatase c in the internal organ of scallop.
