Several organs and tissues of six marine fishes and five fresh-water fishes have been examined for ubiquinone and tocopherol contents. The amount of ubiquinone in dark colored flesh was very high as compared with flesh or other organs, and tissues in fishes. Heart, liver and kidney also contained considerable quantity of ubiquinone. Concentration of ubiquinone in heart of all fishes investigated were similar to those in hearts of mammalian species. Ubiquinone in fishes was only ubiquinone-50 and no other ubiquinone-homologue was found in fishes.

One hundred mg of α, γ, or δ-tocopherol (as acetate) was given to carps on tocopherol-deficient diet and both total tocopherol contents and homologues distribution in each group of carps were determined. As compared with tocopherol contents in feces and left-over diets, the tocopherol found in carps at 24,48 or 96 hrs after intake of tocopherol was very low especially on dosage of δ-tocopherol. From the results of homologues distribution-patterns, α-tocopherol was always found in carps on administration of α, γ, or δ-tocopherol. α and γ-Tocopherols were found in them on administration of δ-tocopherol but no δ-tocopherol was found on administration of α- or γ-tocopherol. It was suggested that there occurs conversion of γ- or δ-tocopherol to α-tocopherol but no conversion of α-tocopherol to non-α-tocopherol. Increase of ubiquinone contents of carps in comparison with the control carps also suggested conversion of tocopherol to ubiquinone.

The influence of BHT-hydroperoxide (2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methyl-4-hydroperoxy-2,5-cyclohexadine-1-one) formed from BHT by heating BHT with potassium hydroxide under the condition used for saponification of vitamin A preparations, ^<1)> on the colorimetric determination of vitamin D by Nield's reagent was examined. It was confirmed that the influence of BHT-hydroperoxide prepared from BHT, ^<8)> on the colorimetric determination of vitamin D was not due to the oxidative decomposition of vitamin D by BHT-hydroperoxide, and that the color reaction of vitamin D with Nield's reagent was inhibited by the presence of BHT-hydroperoxide. Elimination of BHT-hydroperoxide from vitamin D was achieved successfully by gel filtration using Sephadex LH-20 as bed and chloroform as eluting solvent and quantitative recovery of vitamin D was obtained.

The effect of tetrapyrrole compounds on the biosynthesis of corrinoids and porphyrins in P.shermanii was studied. The addition of bilirubin to the medium resulted in a remarkable increase in accumulation of porphyrins in the culture broth and formation of corrinoids in the cells. The amounts of corrinoids and porphyrins formed by addition of 103μM of bilirubin were about 1.5 times as much as those of the control. δ-Aminolevulinic acid synthesis in the growing cells of P.shermanii was inhibited by hemin. Conversion of porphobilinogen to porphyrins was supposed to be regulated in the same manner. The addition of cyanocobalamin resulted in an inhibition of de novo synthesis of corrinoids. Cobalamin and coproporphyrin were the major products under the conditions tested.

Metabolism of ascorbic acid (AsA) and dehydroascorbic acid (DAsA) was studied in healthy six male and eleven female subjects on oral administration of 600mg each of AsA or DAsA. The levels of AsA and total AsA in blood were maximum at the 4th hour after AsA administration, but at the 2nd hour after DAsA administration. Of the vitamin C appearing in blood, AsA form was about 80% and DAsA form about 20%. At the maximum level, the amount of total AsA in the blood of whole body was estimated to be about 5% of the dose administered. The amount of the vitamin excreted in urine in 6 hours after loading was about 60 and 70% of the amount excreted in 24 hours, following administration of AsA and DAsA respectively. The amounts excreted in urine in 24 hours were about 30 and 40% of the dose administered in men and women respectively. Of the vitamin excreted, AsA form was about 90% and DAsA form about 10% in both sexes. No statistically significant difference between men and women, or between administration of AsA and DAsA was found in the amounts of the vitamin excreted in urine in 24 hours at a 5% level. The amount of the vitamin appearing in urine in 24 hours after oral intake of AsA is practically the same as that after intake of DAsA. The biological activity of AsA is considered to be the same as that of DAsA.

The influence of glucocorticoid on the metabolism of B_2 was investigated. Various doses of prednisolone of 2 and 8mg/kg body weight for 3,7,14,21 days were injected into young albino rats. 1) Blood concentration of B_2 was slightly increased. 2) Hepatic concentration of B_2 was increased in the early stage, but decreased in the late stage. These tendencies were remarkably distinct in FAD fraction compared with other B_2 fractions. 3) B_2 concentration in the kidney and the small intestine did not show so remarkable changes as in the liver by the continuous use of glucocorticoid. 4) B_2 concentration of liver in adrenalectomized rats was slightly decreased, and the FAD fraction was reduced markedly.

The effects of vitamin E on the reduced glutathione (GSH), the GSH stability of erythrocytes and the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) value of whole blood in the preserved blood are reported. Bloods obtained from normal persons were mixed with citrate-phosphate-dextrose (CPD) or ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) as anticoagulant. Alpha-tocopheryl acetate was added to anticoagulated bloods to make the concentrations of 20 and 50mg%. The two groups without addition of vitamin E and with addition of solvent alone (the added volumes were equivalent to 20 and 50mg% of vitamin E) were served as controls. When the GSH values were compared on the 3 groups stored for 1 and 3 weeks, these of the two control groups were slightly higher than that of the vitamin E added group. However, no detectable difference was observed among the 3 groups stored for 7 weeks. GSH stabilities were decreased on the 3 groups stored for 4 and 7 days, but the decreased ratio of the vitamin E added group was somewhat smaller than those of the controls. The TBA values of the 3 groups were gradually increased by storage, but the vitamin E added group showed partial inhibition on the increased ratio. However, no significant difference was observed among the 3 groups when they were stored for 7 weeks.
