This paper was summarized for my nutritional and physiological researches of some vitamins using deficient animals induced by unique methodologies. The first chapter deals the research for pantothenic acid deficiency of animals, microorganisms and some plants using its antimetabolites. ω-Methyl pantothenic acid and L(-)-pantothenic acid were useful antagonists for animals. The second chapter focus the role of intestinal flora on some vitamins, especially vitamin K and biotin, because the intestinal flora produce these vitamins. Germfree mice were used for these deficient experimental animals. Newly developed model for vitamin K deficiency was established. The primary biotin deficiency was also confirmed without egg white intake. The third chapter deals the studies concerning ascorbic acid using scurvy-prone ODS (osteodefect Shionogi) rat. We have carried on the studies for the nutritional physiology of trace elements such as vanadium and titanium. ODS rat have enabled us to approach the aspect of an ascorbic acid requirement study ; not only the study of ascorbic acid itself but also studies responsible for ascorbic acid.

The fatty acid compositions in porcine serum, liver and muscle were changed under the conditions including exercise repression and shading. In respect of serum fatty acid, decreased in the contents of myristic acid, palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid and linolenic acid, and increases in the contents of arachidonic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were found to be associated with those conditions. With regard to the fatty acids in liver, myristic acid, stearic acid, linolenic acid and arachidonic acid increased, and EPA and DHA decreased although these changes were comparatively small. The present results suggest that exercice repression and shading caused to release highly unsaturated fatty acids such as arachidonic acid, EPA and DHA from cell membranes of muscle and liver cells, rising the serum levels of these fatty acids, whereas the fatty acids constituting neutral fat such as myristic acid, palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid, stearic acid and oleic acid still remained in those cell membranes but not released.

The nitrogen source of the medium for Escherichia coli was substituted by ^<15>NH_4Cl and (^<15>NH_4)_2SO_4. The ^<15>N atom was incorporated directly into pyridoxine. The competitive ^<14>N-compounds, amino acids, glucosamine, N-acetylglucosamine, carbamoylaspartate, bases of nucleic acids, and vitamins did not inhibit the incorporation of ^<15>N into pyridoxine. The labeled compounds, L-[^<15>N]glutamic acid, L-[<15>N]aspartic acid, L-[amide-^<15>N]glutamine, L-[amide-^<15>N]asparagine and [^<15>N]glycine were not incorporated into pyridoxine. These results suggest that ammonium ion is the origin of the nitrogen atom of pyridoxine in E. coli.
