The change in tocopherol level in red blood cells (RBC) as an index for vitamin E status was studied in relation to that in tocopherols and lipids in plasma during pregnancy. During gestation plasma tocopherol levels increased gradually and significantly in agreement with our previous reports. The changes depended on the changes total lipids in plasma, among which an increase in triglycerides was most predominant. A similar increase was shown in low density lipoprotein levels, while HDL-cholesterol did not significantly change. The ratio of plasma tocopherol to plasma total lipids which has been proposed as a best index for vitamin E status by Horwitt, remained unchanged during gestation, while RBC tocopherol levels rather decreased during the last trimester. The result indicates that tissue tocopherol available for biological function in biomembranes may decrease by the hyperlipemia during gestation, as shown in RBC tocopherol change.

The change of tocopherol in red blood cell (RBC) of women during Pregnancy was investigated, because lipoproteins are carrier proteins in plasma for transportation of tocopherol from plasma to RBC membranes. An elevation of triglycerides which was most predominant among the plasma lipid changes during gestation, was found in parallel with an elevation of LDL and VLDL. The HDL-cholesterol remained unchanged during gestation. Plasma tocopherol levels showed the same changes as for LDL and VLDL, rendering the RBC lowered at the last trimester. Elevated tocopherol levels in plasma during gestation were ascribable to the elevated concentrations of tocopherol in LDL and VLDL. Tocopherol concentrations in HDL fractions remained unchanged during gestation. The RBC tocopherol concentrations were correlated only with tocopherol concentrations in HDL during gestation.

Urinary excretion of urea was increased appreciably, but blood glucose and free fatty acid concentrations decreased significantly, and while serum branched-chain amino acids were marked decreased, when L-ornithine-HCl or L-arginine-HCl was administered orally to healthy human subjects. The effects of L-ornithine and L-arginine might be due to a promotion of utilization of these amino acids in peripheral tissues.
