Recently, with variation of life style including food intake nutritional status is changing in Japanese. On the other hand, it was reported that vitamin B_1 (B_1) intake of Japanese in average was enough(1.16mg/day, 0.58mg/lOOOkcal), 145% for recommended dietary allowance for Japanese, by the national nutritional survey of Japanese. However, in some paper it was reported that B_1 concentrations in blood of Japanese young women were very low, 20〜35 ng/ml. To clarify nutritional status of B_1 and health status of inhabitants in Japan, 524 men (47.4 ± 8.4 years) and 345 women (46.8 ± 8.9 years), total 869 inhabitants lived in Kyoto and Shiga Prefectures in Japan were selected for volunteers with informed consent. All subjects were undergone physical and biochemical examinations including medical examination by interview, blood tests including B_1, concentration in blood and serum biochemical tests in June and July, 2000. Blood B_1 concentration was determined by post-column HPLC method. The subject had no specific disease. Blood, concentration in average was 35.8 ± 10.0 ng/ml in men and 31.4 ± 8.2 ng/ml in women. By national nutritional survey, average B_1, intake in middle aged Japanese was 1.28 mg/day (total average 1.25mg/day) in men and 1.11mg/day (total average 1.08mg/day) in women. Those are enough value compared with Japan recommended allowance. We reported that in inhabitants (35〜55years) lived in Nanjin China blood B_1 concentration was 49.2 ± 10.2 ng/ml in men and 47.8 ± 11.2ng/ml in women, and B_1 intake was 1.30 ± 0.32 mg/day in men and 0.88 ± 0.29 mg/day in average. The discrepancy in blood concentration and intake of B_1 between Japanese and Chinese is considered to be important problem to examine the B_1 nutritional status.
