Several fundamental studies were made on the function of riboflavin in the skin. Total riboflavin contents of cutaneous tissues of various animals were 0.5 to 1.0 μg/g on fresh basis, and the ratio of FAD. FMN and free riboflavin was about 6 : 3 : 1. Total riboflavin content was abundant according to the pigmentation of the skin. FAD-^<14>C and FMN were synthesized in the skin homogenate from added riboflavin-^<14>C. Intraperitonealy injected riboflavin-^<14>C was incorporated into FAD, FMN and riboflavin in rat's skin.

Pyridoxine disulfide and pyridoxamine disulfide were prepared by the reaction of their thiosulfate with mercaptans. The reaction of sodium hydrogensulfide with pyridoxine and pyridoxamine thiosulfate was also discussed.

The effects of the deficiency of niacin were investigated on the gastric secretion in rats fed two types of basal diets, i.e. one, low protein diet composed of polished rice, bean paste, cabbage and vitamins excluding niacin, and another, protein enhanced diet by adding casein, gelatine and a mixture of several amino acids. After 5 and half months of feeding, a higher gastric acidity and a stronger hyperfunction of acid secreting cells were observed in the low protein・niacin-deficient group than in the normal protein・niacin group. Vitamin B_<12> binding capacity, which reflects the intrinsic factor secretion necessary for the absorption of this vitamin, was also higher in the low protein・niacin-deficient group rather than the normal protein・niacin control. It seems that these findings indicate an increase of gastric mucosa formation and occurrence of gastric adenohypersthesia in the rats fed a low protein・niacin-deficient diet.

Twenty rural children were administered riboflavin or vitamin B_6 together with other vitamins in an attempt to determine whether the urinary excretion of keto- and 17-OH-corticoid would reflect the administration of these vitamins. In addition, tryptophan load test was conducted. The result showed that the urinary pattern of corticoids was improved significantly and xanthurenic acid excretion was decreased remarkably after supplementation of vitamin B_6 as well as riboflavin. From the data presented, it seems that some of the children were deficient in riboflavin and vitamin B_6 and this may cause stresses and disorder of tryptophan metabolism in them.

The first paper of this series showed that the red fluorescent product was formed by reaction of thiamine with Cu^<2+>, and could be applied to the detection of the vitamin. The second report dealt with the reaction products between thiolized thiamine and Cu^<2+>, Cd^<2+> or Zn^<2+>, respectively. The molar ratio of metal to thiamine of the product was found to be 1 : 2. In this paper, the reaction between thiolized thiamine and Cu^+ was dascribed. The reaction product had a brilliant and stable red fluorescence and the molar ratio of Cu^* to thiamine was found to be 1 : 1. It is supposed that the reaction product is a metal chelate compound by the examination of ultraviolet and infrared spectura.

During the course of studies on purine-corrinoids and their coenzyme-forms with Propionibacterium arabinosum, a variety of intermediates were obtained depending upon the conditions for the biosynthesis. The relation between the chemical structures of the intermediates as well as the products and the conditions for the biosynthesis suggested that Pr.arabinosum have an additional pathway of corrinoid biogenesis to the same two as Pr.shermanii except for the ability to synthesize organic bases. The addition of excessive base, even if of appropriate nature for incorporation into corrin ring, resulted in accumulation of corrinoid-carboxylic acids as well as incomplete corrinoids as their coenzyme forms. The finding suggests that the biosynthesis of corrinoid-molecule might proceed as its coenzyme-form, which seems to be formed at the same time or soon after incorporation of Co-atom into corrin ring followed by the ring closure.

The recovery for the thiamine in the modified milk powder was generally low by usual procedure as extraction with diluted HCl. The recovery could be raised by treatment with proteinase of Streptomyces griceus followed by digestion with Taka-diastase.

A photometric procedure for the determination of N-carbobenzoxy-L-glutamylcholine (I) was established by the use of triiodide reagent and ethylene dichloride. For the separation of (I) from choline chloride a preliminary examination was made on the ion exchange column chromatography using Amberlite IR-120 and paper chromatography using a developing solvent containing n-butanol・acetic acid・water (4 : 1 : 1). In the column chromatographic method. (I) and choline are absorbed on Amberlite IR-120,the former is eluted with 3% NaCl・0.1N HCl, then the latter is eluted with 1N NaOH. The recovery from column chromatography was found to be about 95-103% and that from paper chromatography to be about 95%. An aqueous solution (I) is comparatively unstable, the reaction velocity coefficients obtained by column chromatographic method are k_1(25℃)=12.06×10^<-4>day^<-1> and k_1(50℃)=62.51×10^<-4>day^<-1>. Therefore, in order to preserve (I) a high degree of dried state is needed. When (I) was heated in a powdery state, only 0.2% of free choline was produced at 120℃ for 30 min.

It has been reported that homopantothenic acid (HOPA) which is obtained by the substitution of β-alanine group of pantothenic acid for γ-aminobutyric acid can easily pass through the blood brain barrier and exerts good effects on diseases of the brain. In the present clinical trial of HOPA therapy for 26 retarded children, it was also demonstrated that the electroence-phalogram was apparently improved and intelligence quotient was increased higher in HOPA-treated group than in the control group when tested "Analytical developmental examination method", designed by Enjoji.
