The reason why the clinical signs of riboflavin deficiency appear chiefly on mucous membrane has not yet been elucidated. In a previous paper, we demonstrated that the activities of flavin enzymes other than DPNH-diaphorase were decreased remarkably by riboflavin restriction on the intestinal mucosa in which mitotic division is active. The present investigation was concerned with the effect of riboflavin deficiency on the cell renewal rate. We compared the incorporation of radioactive phosphorus into the deoxyribonucleic acid of the cell nucleus of mouse intestinal mucosa in riboflavin or iron deficiency. The following results were obtained : The incorporation of ^<32>P into the DNA was even greater in chronic riboflavin deficiency, while the incorporation was more slight in chronic iron deficiency. Such results are supposed to show that the mucous epithelial cells are renewing as usual or even more greatly in riboflavin deficiency though the regenerating cells are immature.

In a previous paper we showed that the microsomal DPNH-diaphorase activity might be concerned with cell mitosis. The present study was undertaken to determine how microsomal DPNH-diaphorase activities differ among tissues in which cell mitosis is active or inactive. Cell fractions were prepared by the usual Strittmatter's method, and the mitochondrial contamination was calculated on the basis of succinic dehydrogenase activity. The mitochondrial DPNH-diaphorase activity was higher than the microsomal activity in liver, kidney, heart muscle and skeletal muscle. On the contrary, the microsomal DPNH-diaphorase activity was much higher than the mitochondrial activity in the intestinal mucosa in which cell mitosis is active.

Wattenberg observed that the DPNH-diaphorase activity was extremely high in proliferating region of cancer tissue of large intestine. We have assumed by a series of study that the microsomal DPNH-diaphorase activity might be concerned with cell mitosis in proliferating tissues. The present study was undertaken to compare the activity in subcellular components of cancer tissues of stomach and rectum to the activity of the originating respective normal mucosa. The following results were obtained : The mitochondrial DPNH-diaphorase activity was lower in cancer tissue than in normal mucosa of either stomach or rectum. On the contrary, the microsomal DPNH-diaphorase activity was higher in cancer tissue. Such results are supposed to support the above mentioned author's assumption.

No significant change occured in urinary excretion of inorganic sulfate in children after a supplement of water-soluble vitamins, whereas addition of vitamin A, together with watersoluble vitamins, resulted in a marked decrease. In contrast to inorganic sulfate, the excretion of taurine was decreased remarkably by a supplementation of water-soluble vitamins and it came to more lower level by an administration of vitamin A. The decrease of taurine can be possibly explained by an assumption that a stress of hypovitaminosis had been imposed on the children and that the stress was lightened by dosing of the vitamins.

From the biological interest, five O, S-dicholanoylthiamine derivatives (I-V) were synthesised by the reaction of corresponding cholanoyl chloride with thiamine in alkaline medium. The compounds obtained here are insoluble in water and soluble in chloroform or ethyl acetate. These compounds are negative to thiochrome reaction, but become positive after treatment with alkali. The regeneration of thiamine and cholanic acid was shown. Biological test are now undertaken.

S-Methylmethionine sulfonium chloride precipitates quantitatively as direineckate from 0.1N HCl solution, in the presence of large excess of reinecke salt. This property was used for its determination. A sample solution was mixed with an excess amount of reinecke salt solution, and HCl was added so as to make finally a 0.1N. The mixture was allowed to stand, agitating frequently and protecting from light, in ice cold water for one hour, and filtered. The excess reinecke salt remained in the filtrate was determined colorimetrically.
