On the basis of dehydration reaction, fatty acids of vitamin A ester were selectively separated from other coexisting lipid esters such as glyceride. Fatty acid composition was determined by the use of gas chromatography. Vitamin A ester in fish liver oils was composed of various saturated or unsaturated fatty acids from C_<14> to C_<24>. Dominant members were palmitic and oleic acids. Polyenoic acid content was generally low as compared with that of other lipid esters such as glyceride.

An addition of a proper amount of riboflavin to the culture media has a favorable effect on the germination of pollen and the growth of pollen tube. Metallic ions have an adverse effect on the germination of pollen and growth of pollen tube, which, however, is counteracted by riboflavin. A proper quantity of KCN accelerates the germination and growth and riboflavin promotes the effect furthermore.

An administration of p-phenylenediamine on albino rats caused a distinct decrease in the total riboflavin contents of various organs. In the case of weekly administration of 1/1000 amount of fatal dose, total riboflavin and FAD decreased in liver, while in the stomach free riboflavin increased, and the total amount, FAD and FMN decreased. In the case of daily administration of 1/500 amount of fatal dose, total riboflavin and FAD decreased in liver and in the kidney FAD decreased and FMN increased.

By morphological and histological examinations of the internal organs of albino rat, administered with p-phenylenediamine, atrophy and degeneration of liver cells, congestion of kidney, gastritis and dermatitis were recognized. Occationally, a slight skin disorder was seen by a single application of p-phenylenediamine, but the changes of the internal organs, accompanied by the loss of weight and decrease or urine, appeared in prolonged administration.

In the previous paper, the authors reported that flavoviolet (1-ribityl-2-oxo-3-hydroxy-6,7-dimethylquinoxaline) was found in the leaves, when the above-ground part of a pea plant was water-cultured in riboflavin solution. In this paper, the authors reported that this substance was found not only in the riboflavin-cultured pea plant, but also in some of the natural plants. When the above-ground part of a pea plant was water-cultured in the flavoviolet solution, the amount of riboflavin increased. The higher the concentration of flavoviolet was, and the more the cultured days went on, the higher the rate of riboflavin increase became. Then there appeared a new blue fluorescent substance having the Rf value of 0.26 (butanol・acetic acid・water=4 : 1 : 5). In this case, this substance may be assumed as an intermediate in riboflavin formed from flavoviolet.

It was previously noted that a flavinmononucleotide-like substance was found in the culture solution of Rhizopus oryzae containing riboflavin. In this paper, this flavin was revealed chemically and enzymatically to be a new flavinmonophosphate in which phosphate was attached to a flavinmononuclestide in which phosphate is attached to 3', 2', 5'or 2', 3'of ribityl radical.

One year feeding experiment with thiamine tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide (TTFD) in male rats has been studied. Twenty four rats were fed on the basal diet as control, and another 24 rats were placed on a diet containing 0.1% of TTFD. The increase in body weight, food intake, food efficiency, organ weight, autopsy findings and histological findings did not show any difference between both groups.

Synthesis of an asymmetric disulfide, S-(3-acetylthio-7-carbomethoxyheptyl) S'-benzyl disulfide, was attempted in a couple of ways. The condensation of sodium 3-acetylthio-7-carbomethoxyheptyl thiosulfate (the Bunte salt) and benzylmercaptan achieved preferably the purpose. Another attempt for the synthesis lay on reaction of S, S'-(3-acetylthio-7-carbomethoxyheptyl) thiolsulfinate and benzylmercaptan. But the preparation method of the precursor (the thiolsulfinate) involving replacement of the bromine atom in 3-bromo-7-carbomethoxyheptyl disulfide by the acetylthio group as an intermediate step was found inadequate for the purpose, because the replacement accompanied rearrangement of the disulfide linkage to the carbon atom carrying the bromine atom. However the observations were derived from the synthetic study of an oily product, the benzyl derivative, which could not be completely purified. Therefore the observations were confirmed also in synthesis of S-(3'-acetylthio-7'-carbomethoxyheptylthio) thiamine and successfully established. Additionally two synthetic methods of α-lipamide were reported.
