To investigate a possible role of retinoic acid (RA) as a morphogen, effect of treating embryonal carcinoma F9 with RA was analysed in detail. Differentiation of F9, as monitored by the secretion of basement membrane proteins, was biphasic depending on the dose of RA. Similar biphasic response was observed in the secretion of tissue type plasminogen activator. The biphasic pattern of differentiation was stable for long period, but dibutyryl cAMP changed it to monophasic after 12 days. Result of monitoring of laminin secretion 5 days after pulse treatment with RA for less than 12 h caused intermediate differentiation. For full differentiation, more than 24 h of pulse treatment was needed. This intermediate differentiation could be nullified only by washing twice with interval between. A plausible explanation for this result was that RA metabolite secreted by F9 is important for the differentiation.

After 40 to 45 years, males experience retarded physiological functions and various psychological changes due to the aging process. The general Japanese male experiences "fu shi me" (A sense of climacterium), a turning point in life, at round the age of 50 (±2). In this period, it would be considered that essential nutrients, especially water-soluble vitamins, tend to be marginally deficient state. The relationship between an awareness of "fu shi me" and blood vitamins concentration was investigated with respect to their life style ; commuting, late night return home, smoking and eating out. Vitamins, B_1, B_6 and C concentration in blood were significantly low in males who experienced an awareness of "fu shi me" at round the age of 45 (±2) compaired to the general group. The commuting, late night return home, smoking and eating out appear to result in lower levels of blood vitamins, B_1 and C.

The relative activity of quinolinic acid to nicotinic acid as niacin nutriture was investigated using weanling rats of the Wistar strain (3-week old) fed on a tryptophan-limited and nicotinic acid-free diet containing various amounts of nicotinic acid or quinolinic acid. As the results, (1) in comparison of body weight gain, the relative activity of quinolinic acid was 1/24 in weight basis and 1/18 in molar basis ; (2) in comparison of urinary excretions of MNA, 2-Pyr and 4-Pyr, its activity was 1/37 in weight basis and 1/27 in molar basis ; (3) in comparison of NAD levels in blood and liver, its activity was 1/24 in weight basis and 1/18 in molar basis. Therefore, it was found that the relative activity of quinolinic acid to nicotinic acid as niacin nutriture was aroud 1/30 in weight basis and 1/20 in molar basis.

Vitamin B_1 contents in foods are usually determined by two methods. One is the thiochrome fluorometric method (method 1) and the other is the high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method with the post-column derivatization using potassium ferricyanide in sodium hydroxide solution (method 2). For vitamin B_1 content in pork, we found that the method 1 and the method 2 showed different values. Lower values were always obtained by the method 2. The reason for this difference was recognized that 2-(1-hydroxyethyl) thiamin (HET), which is able to be transformed into thiochrome by potassium ferricyanide, was omitted by the method 2. HET is an active form of vitamin B_1 and its activity is equivalent to that of thiamin. However, no HPLC method has been reported for HET. We developed, therefore, a HPLC method for simultaneous determination of HET and thiamin, based on the method 2. By the method, vitamin B_1 contents in foods can be determined easily and precisely as the sum of HET, which will be converted to thiamin equivalent, and thiamin contents.
