The physiological importance of arginine-specific ADP-ribosyltransferase in vertebrates has not been elucidated, partly because its target proteins are not identified yet. In this paper, we describe four candidates for the targets (p33 and actin in chicken heterophils, Gsα in chicken spleen cell membrane and Ca^<2+>-ATPase in rabbit skeletal muscle sarcoplasmic reticulum) and effects of ADP-ribosylation on their functions, and discuss the possible role of arginine-specific ADP-ribosylation in vertebrates.

As a part of the researches for the elucidation of the correlation between the chemical structure at C-6 position of ascorbic acid analogues and the activity of vitamin C, the synthesis of L-threo-hexo-2-enaro-1,4-lactone (S-AsA) ethyl ester (ES-AsA) was examined, and ester was obtained quantitatively. Its physicochemical properties were examined in its sodium salt (ES-AsA:Na). The identification of the compound was made by the analysis of UV, IR, MS, ^1H NMR and ^<13>13C NMR spectra and elementary analysis. Analytical conditions by TLC and HPLC were also clarified. The relationship between changes in absorbance at absorption maxima of UV spectra and pH were determined, and ES-AsA: Na, S-AsA: Na and AsA:Na were compared for the stability. As a result, esterification caused slight improvement in its stability. It exhibited almost same reducing power on DCIP compared with that of AsA and S-AsA:Na.

HPLC either with fluometric or electrochemical detectors was applied for determination of retinyl palmitate, α-tocopherol, thiamine, riboflavin, folic acid and phylloquinone in liquid preparations for enteral alimentation. The methods showed high selectivity for detection of the individual vitamins. For determination of pantothenic acid and biotin, biological assay methods were performed. Simultaneous determination method of retinol and α-tocopherol, or thiamine and riboflavin, were rapid and available to be routinely used in laboratory. During storage of the preparations at room temperature for 12 months, thiamine and folic acid were lost by 12% and 25% in a neutral preparation, respectively, while 39% of thiamine and 10% of folic acid were lost i an acidic preparation. There were no remarkable changes for other vitamins in both preparations.

The nutritional status of vitamin E in neonates was examined on the basis of the measurement of α-tocopherol contents in plasma, red blood cells (RBCs), platelets, leukocytes, and buccal mucosal cells. In neonates, plasma α-tocopherol levels decreased, as repeatedly reported. However, low plasma tocopherol in neonates did not indicate poor vitamin E status, because low plasma lipids in neonates are responsible for the low plasma tocopherol level. Tocopherol levels in RBC in neonates did not show deficient state. Whereas, the levels in platelets, leukocytes and buccal mucosal cells were lower in neonates, as compared with those in children. The decreased levels of tocopherol in the neonatal cells, expect for RBCs, indicate a poor vitamin E status in neonates.

Liquid preparations containing 5 mg or 10 mg of thiamin tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide hydrochloride (TTFD-HCl) and 2 kinds of liquid preparations containing 10 mg of thiamin nitrate were given to healthy male subjects, and the bioavailability of vitamin B_1 after administration of each preparation was investigated. It was found that the C_<max>, AUC and 24-hour urinary excretion after oral administration of 10 mg of TTFD in liquid preparation was about twice those of 5 mg of TTFD in liquid preparations. No difference was observed between T_<max> after the administration of 10 mg and 5 mg of TTFD in liquid preparations. The C_<max>, AUC and 24-hour urinary excretion after the administration of 10 mg of thiamin nitrate in liquid preparations were lower than those of 5 mg of TTFD in liquid preparations.
